My piece-o-crap

(bear with me here...whilst I'm generally code + tech savvy, I'm not an extensive over-clocker or modder, so I basically know the bare minimum about my hardware)

P4 Celeron @ 2.66ghz

2GB DDR ram

Radeon 9550 w/ 256 meg ram

Soundblaster Live audio

320 gig SATA

160 gig SATA

80 gig IDE

40 gig IDE

I don't really use my machine for anything too intensive. Mainly coding, audio apps (mainly Nuendo), listening to tunes and watching TV/Movies/Pr0nz.

i dont own all these computeres, but i will post them as i use them on a regualar basis. (i have a split family)

my gaming rig:

pIII coppermine, 733mhz, OC'ed to 880mhz

ASUS CUSL2 mobo

384 megs ram

geforce2 mx200

creative soundblaster CT4830 (i think)

36gb main drive (with pagefile reduced to almost nothing)

3.6 gb drive for pagefile only

17"crt 9samsung syncmaster 753df)

xp pro (all the fancy features turned off so it appears like win98, improves performance)

(its pretty bad lol)

my father's rig

p4 3ghz with hyperthreading

1 gig kingston ram

80 gig drive

onboard graphics

19" toshiba lcd display

my grandma's rig

celeron D 3ghz

512 megs of ram

onboard graphics

160 gig drive

17" benQ LCD

my moms video editing laptop

amd turion 64 1.86 ghz

1 gig ram

80 gig drive

compaq presario vs2000

greg's audio ibook

g4 (i dont even know which processor, but it was the more expensive model, bought 1 week before apple put out the intel powered macbooks)

1 gig ram

40 gig drive

the ibook, compaq laptop, and the celeron are all at one location and networked together running on dsl that clocks on avg 1.5-2 mbps

the pIII and the p4 as well as an xbox 360 are on a network at another location (my usual place of habitation) they are on cable internet which averages from 6.5 to 10 mbps. i like to brag about it.

i spend most of my time at the pIII/p4 location, but am at the ibook/compaq/celeron location at least every second weekend.

i am effectively the adminstrator of all these systems. i maintain, update, and care for all of them.

  • 1 month later...

I’m in the process of building a new NAS, which is nothing special, just a standard PC with a 16 port RAID controller and a bunch of hard drives. I’ve just ordered the parts for a new Vista PC as I currently don’t have one.

Vista PC:

Asus P5K3 Deluxe Motherboard

Intel Core2Quad Extreme QX6800

4GB (4 x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS3 (DDR3)

2 X 512MB Asus HD2900XT

4 x 1000GB HGST (IBM/Hitachi) hard drives.

1000W Coolermaster Real Power PSU

Pioneer DVR-212BK

RME Hammerfall HDSP 9652 Hi-End Pro Audio 52Channel Card

Zalman HD160XT-B Home Theatre PC Enclosure

It’s going to just sit in my home entertainment equipment rack, so I don’t see myself upgrading anything ever.

What I'm working towards (most of the hardware is present, but I need to work on the software side):

Media/Storage Server:

Intel P4 3.0 GHz

Asus PSCH-L server board

Promise FastTrak TX4 S150 controller card (for 4 SATA ports on top of the 6 on the mobo)

1 GB DDR SDRAM

10x 250 GB Seagate NL35 (configured for software RAID-5, meaning 2.25 TB of usable space)

700W Thermaltake(?) Toughpower powersupply (which isn't enough. I need to eject 1 harddisk to boot it up, then reseat it and reset to complete the boot)

Currently this one has LFS installed, which will soon become Gentoo. I will also add a Hauppauge PVR-350 so it can receive and encode the incoming video. It will make its storage available to the network via NFS and shall on top of this run an Icecast client and server to provide music throughout the home.

Proxy server:

Jetway J7F4 C7 1.2GHz (7w) J7F4K1G2E Fanless (Mini-ITX)

256 MB DDR2 SDRAM

60Watt PicoPSU + powerbrick

Another Gentoo box, this time without moving parts. Picked this model because it has 2 network adapters on board. This one will network-boot off of the storage server.

Other Stuff Server:

1GHz Via EPIA Eden SE Fanless (Mini-ITX)

1 GB DDR SDRAM

2x 200 GB Western Digital SE (configured for software RAID-1, meaning 200 GB of usable space)

120Watt PicoPSU + powerbrick which is likely to get downgraded to 60 Watt since that's proven to be sufficient.

This thing will run server programs for stuff like NTP, DNS, DHCP, PostgreSQL, SQUID, Postfix, LDAP, etc. Using Gentoo I might add.

Personal Workstation / Print Server:

AMD Sempron 2600+ (running in 64-bit)

1 GB DDR SDRAM

2x 200 GB Western Digital SE (configured for software RAID-1, meaning 200 GB of usable space)

Realtek 8169 Gigabit network adapter which appears to have... issues...

Lite-On DVDRW SHM-165P6S

Adaptec 2930 Ultra2 SCSI adapter

HP ScanJet 6300C

HP DeskJet 890C

Creative SoundBlaster PCI64 (or some cheap piece of shit like that)

It will once again run Gentoo for the time being. Mostly for consistency. I might have to replace the printer as it hasn't done anything but collect dust for several years now.

MythTV Client:

1GHz Via EPIA Eden SE Fanless (Mini-ITX)

1 GB DDR SDRAM

60Watt PSU built into the case.

Another Gentoo box without moving parts, but this time it's out of necessity. This machine is to be placed in the living room, so it must be completely silent. It will boot off of the Storage Server and be the front-end of the MythTV server aswell.

The Proxy and Misc Stuff server are together housed in a Travla C147 1U rackmountable case. Workstation and Storage Server are Sharkoon Rebel9 Economy (or whatever the model without the gigantic fan was) cases, in case of the Storage Server, slightly modded to allow the placement of 2 ICY DOCK MB455 multibay removable harddisk enclosures. The MythTV client is housed in a Morex 3688 (silver).

Everything's tied together with a HP ProCurve 2524 which will probably get replaced by some cheap-ass gigabit switch as the gigabit adapter for the 2524 by itself costs more than the 2524 plus an Asus GIGAX 8-port switch...  :???:
