  1. Does anyone post their results on sites / mapping sites? I couldn't find any good sites with results for the UK =[. But I'd like to add to that.
  2. Haha, I like the found of that one. I'd do that if I knew anyone else around this area who actually went war driving other than me. Although I suppose I could build it and get my friends to plant it for me :P
  3. I won't debate it either, I most likely am wrong, and I would like to state, that it wasn't something we did. It was something we thought about. Originally I took my laptop on a bus trip a few years back when I couldnt' drive, and I found that 75% of Wifi AP's in my area were open. This war drive was purely to see if there were any half way points that we could connect to, as the idea was to make one antenna at a time, test it at both locations, once at a time, and if we could find the "middle man" we knew we should be good to have two direction antenna's to connect to each other. We went for the drive, made the map up, but never really got any furthur. I personally do believe it is wrong to steal someone elses wifi (how much is mobile broadband or internet for mobile phones these days?) and as a sales assistant in an electrical retailer (gosh, damn students are desperate for money), I do advise people to password protect their routers that I sell. Knowledge is power afer all.
  4. It actually isn't a crime. I'm sure I read that a judge wouldn't prosecute someone who was war driving and using someones wifi, because if they were too stupid to put a password on it, like they would have a lock on their front door, then its their own fault. But that isn't our main aim anyway, the main aim is to have peer to peer.

    Hak5 server hosts

At university? Isn't JANET the education network for schools, colleges and university? Also doesn't Rapidshare have Multiple direct access to Tier 1 networks, giving them huge speeds. I find that rapidshare can max out my connection, where as other stuff doesn't.
  6. Intresting Theard: I use: HP Compaq NX6125 Built in wifi Software: Windows XP (SP2) & Net Stumbler GPS: Nokia N95 I run ExtGPS (http://www.symarctic.com/beta/static.php?page=extgps_download) This is a piece of software that takes the GPS and bluetooth's it to my laptop (again built in BT). <UPDATE> I normally run my laptop on it's battery as I only ever go out for about an hour. But if I do go out for longer I do own / take out a car inverter with me to plug into the cig lighter </UPDATE> What do I do with my results. Make maps. http://itspj.com/wifi/whole-downend.html I started war driving to map the wireless points between me and a friend as we are trying to setup a long distance wifi between our houses, and thought if our antennas weren't strong enough, we could "piggy back" on somebody elses wifi in the middle of us, just so we could have a connection to talk to each other over LAN if either or both our ISPs went down.

    Slow down a network

we did have a wifi AP, but my boss has tardily knocked it over several times and broken 3 antennas... so its now been removed as he wanted it for home O.o *sighs*

    Slow down a network

thanks, I will look into QoS a bit more now :) thanks for pointing me in the right direction :D
  9. Hey, I was just wondering if anyone out there knew of any ways to slow down a network. Say I have files on machine XYZ and want to copy them onto ABC, but want to do it was 10Mbps rather than 100Mbps, does anyone know of a way how to do this? There are several reasons for wanting to do this. 1) I get nagged at by everyone at work when I do a backup for maxing out the network when all they do is share their 20KB word documents... 2) it makes it seem like I'm doing work for 10 times as long :P Ok, maybe that's a couple of reasons then, but I believe they are both good and valid ones... kind of. Should note, sorry if this is in the wrong section >.< and thanks to anyone who moves it to the correct one. Thanks

    System Specs

My Desktop: My Laptop: Its easier than writing it out :P
  11. Hey James, one good way to do it is within your router admin. A lot of routers, if you login to the web based admin panel, will tell you what machine names and MAC addresses are connected, if you wanted, you could find out your neighbours address, just by finding out how often they are on and figuring it out, and then maybe MAC filter it, to stop the pesty war-driver out side :P PJ
  12. not really, you can have completely transparent keys, and then either have, A) a black (or any colour for that matter) character on the key. or no character at all, I know I never look at my keyboard when I use it, so no charcters would be fine for me :) I also went to maplins today, stocked up on their cheap 17p LEDs ^_^ PJ
  13. Well, I just got a new zboard the other week, so I might take my first keyboard I got, (a nice black one it was) and mod that, I might have to walk to maplins during my lunch break tomorrow and get some LEDs, I'm sure they are expensive there aswell :( ah well, I will make a shopping list later. Hey, I might get to use my dremel I got for xmas whilst mounting the LEDs etc :D. PJ
  14. I like the sound of the backlit one, I was thinking of using (forgive me if my electronics is rough, not used what I learnt in school in a while, so even if what I say may not work, thats because I've not researched into what Im doing :P) a light sensor and a capacitor and then as the light to the keyboard dims out, (getting darker) then the lights on the keyboard would light up. My only problem with designing this, is my monitors would probably have a huge effect on the light that is sensed, as my keyboard is right infront of my monitor. Also I think this would look ace, if you could backlight every key and have transparent keys. PJ

    Net Send Problem

If you still haven't enabled it yet Go start > control panel > administrative tools (classic view) > services > scroll down and find messenger > properties > start up type: manual > apply > then click start to start it. If there is anything else netsend requires, it will be in that list somewhere, and will be disabled, so look for it or google it and enable the required components.
