  1. I use scroll lock on the FreeBSD console to... scroll.
  2. It seems everyone can lock their own threads now, so they don't actually have to request for a mod to lock it if they decide they don't like the discussion that's going on, which I'm not sure is a good thing.
  3. I don't think so, the first switch I ever had was was a 5 port one, and that isn't a multiple of 8 obviously. Most switches with 8 or more ports do seem to be multiples of 8 though.
  4. I'm not a big fan of putting Linux or BSD on people who aren't particularly technically minded's PCs. If they do more than browse the web and use a word processor, for instance they sometimes download and install bits of software and such, I've found putting *nix on their machine is a pretty good way to convince them Windows is a lot better; usually the first time some Windows only software they want to use won't install and there is no decent idiot-friendly alternative.

    cat cam?

You can buy battery-powered wi-fi cameras, so I'd say all you need is one of those and some duct tape.

    Stats!

It seems the reason my avatar is gone is because it was on ImageShack and they deleted it, I guess the old forum cached it or something, I don't know. I can't find it on my hard drive either, if I search for "berk" (which was the name of the character) on my PCs all I get is clips of the good bits from the movie Showgirls and database library installation files, which means I've lost it :(. Looks like I'll have to say goodbye to my nice blue avatar since I captured that from DVD and made it into an avatar I think, and I can't be bothered doing that again.

Where did my avatar go anyway? Everyone else's just seems to have been stretched and mine disappeared.

    Stats!

I just noticed the stats features of this board and I almost orgasmed when I saw them. I LOVE statistics, they are one of my favouritest things in the world. I do actually have a Python script I wrote that collected posting statistics for the top 40 posters for the old board, but this is so much more pretty. One thing that is missing though is line graphs of posting over time, it has a bar chart of average posting activity by time, but no cumulative post count over time that I can find. Oh well, can't have everything.
  9. I'm confused as to what the message means, what are we supposed to PM him for?
  10. I don't think it's a hash, both because the page says is uses "unique acoustic fingerprint technology" and if it did use a hash I doubt it would work with songs from Pandora, because those MP3s will have a different hash to ones in common circulation on P2P networks (and it would be totally impractical, they'd have to find every version of an MP3 of a song, listen to it and enter its details into the DB). This is pretty cool though, since renaming and ID3 tagging MP3s is pretty boring.
  11. That's not the same message, you need to install the DateTime::Locale module now.
  12. It's not really an inside joke, its meaning is pretty well known. From Moonlit's post I would assume its not supposed to be there, though.
  13. They do the jobs that HDD laptops don't want to do?

    Accessing C:\

Possibly, although to assume all educational institutions have sensible security policies would be a mistake.
  15. You're missing the DateTime::Format::Mail Perl module, you need to install it with CPAN. Does /dev/dsp exist and if so what are its permissions? Are you running something else that may be already using /dev/dsp (perhaps a sound daemon)?. Try installing lsof if it isn't already installed and run lsof | grep dsp to see if anything has /dev/dsp open.
  16. Probably people don't like having to hit reload 5 times before they can access the page they want.
  17. I agree with that, I have far fewer problems getting a functional desktop environment up and running with FreeBSD. I have FreeBSD on my main desktop PC and one of my servers, and I have had very little trouble with it. There are a few problems though, FreeBSD tends to be less well supported than Linux by software vendors, and the Linux binary compatibility still isn't as good as I'd like it to be. I'd like to be able to run a higher version of VMWare than 3 for instance. I can't get NTFS-3G to work properly until FreeBSD either and I don't think much work is being done on the NTFS native driver, which is why I have Gentoo on my dual-boot laptop - being a laptop it has limited disk space and I want to be able to use the NTFS partition for storage (which means good support for writing) since I made the Linux partition minimal to reduce the space Windows has no access to.
  18. Oh, really? I was under the impression that a 1x1 picture was near 1080p in quality.
  19. Why does having proprietary drivers in it cause legal issues?
  20. because maybe more then 13 at a time can watch. And if it were just a 1x1 pixel video 35000 times more people than that could watch, but it wouldn't be very enjoyable viewing.
  21. It seems probable, but how could he think that size and quality of image is suitable for a live show?
  22. Well PDF is easy, it's Excel which is trickier, especially if it's not a Windows server since then you can't use COM. The second link isn't really what he wants to do I don't think, there's a big difference between generating a very simple XLS file and interpreting one (if you actually look at the contents of an XLS file you'll see a pretty big difference between what that script produces and what Excel does). Anyway this might do the right thing, it's a bit old but it can probably be modified/updated.
