  1. There's nothing stopping someone from using SSH to control ftp directly, you don't even need a shell, just create a user whose shell is set to the ftp client.
  2. Well for cracking substitution ciphers you can do a letter frequency analysis to guess which letter each substituted letter is likely to be, and then swap around the letters and compare the decrypted words to words from a list of English words until the decrypted text has the greatest number of words matching ones in your list. The text does have to be a decent length for this to work though. You can combine other techniques for guessing too (e.g. a single letter word is likely to be a, two letter words will be on, to, is, in, etc).
  3. You just enabled what? If you specifically gave the Guest account admin privileges then that's completely pointless if you were trying to prove yourself right or something; the OP wouldn't be able to do that since he claims he doesn't know the admin password on "his" laptop.
  4. Did you read his post? He said "All three hard drives and the optical drives were completely disconnected while doing this." so it's nothing to do with the drive. Anyway, astromodder, if it doesn't matter if the reseller doesn't supply the motherboard anymore, they are still the people who you need to contact.
  5. I think I've read it at least 3 times, but I can only Digg something once.
  6. Well some online shops seem to be selling it and there are a number of reviews listed from a simple Google search, so I would say yes, it's legitimate. Do you post on forums asking that about every product you are considering buying?

    So mIRC? Then no.

IRC scripts to do what? On what client?
  9. I don't think there was SSL/TLS (which I assume you mean by ssh) before, I think it was just added. The certificate isn't properly configured, maybe a free signed certificate from StartCom would be a good idea; Firefox and Konqueror have StartCom as a trusted signing authority. Obviously a free cert isn't a good as a proper one, but they do verify that you are the owner of the domain by emailing a confirmation code to webmaster@ or postmaster@.
  10. In that case you have done something stupid making your computer very insecure. I just installed a fresh copy of XP in VMWare to check this. I've installed the patches, but I have changed no security settings at all other than enabling Guest:

  12. Not only do I not think this has nothing to do with political correctness, I don't think a coherent political correctness movement ever existed, rather it was an attempt to lump together various anti-discrimination movements so that when some idiot bureaucrat or minor government official or similar said or did something stupid they could say she or he was part of the political correctness movement, therefore discrediting (or attempting to discredit) all those in reality unrelated movements using straw man and red herring arguments (e.g. "this stupid bureaucrat has said something idiotic like celebrating Christmas is racist therefore all groups which we incorrectly identify as being part of a homogeneous movement are wrong").
  13. You haven't had to defragment before using ntfsresize (which is what GParted uses) since version 1.9.0 which was released in 2004.
  14. Huh? Your maths teacher is teaching you German? Shouldn't she be teaching mathematics? Or is she also a German teacher?
  15. I do prefer the names which name us as individual things rather than a collective (that is the names which are plurals). Edit: Also no definite article.
  16. How about this: close those instant messengers. You won't get a virus anyway, but that would solve that problem. Also this is the stupidest thing I've read for quite a while. Stupider than this.

    over the internet

No, I have heard of adware though. And you mean spyware. And it's not really anything like this, because you can't just check what pages a person has been to, you can only check if they have been to specific pages. So you can check for commonly visited sites of course, but what use is it knowing if someone has been to Google?
  18. He didn't say he used Windows.

    cat cam?

That is a great idea, I'd definitely pay to shoot at you guys. Don't nerf guns usually require quite significant manual effort to launch though? Like pumping or something, not to mention reloading. If there's a high-capacity electrically-powered nerf launcher that would be suitable. Actually I either never even realised you could donate money or I somehow forgot.
  20. I thought that was Steve Ballmer? Didn't he throw a chair at someone?
  21. I can guess what it means, but unless you are describing yourself as a certain type of sexual deviant I'm not sure my guess is accurate.
