Funny thing happened a few days ago. I was involved in a discussion about which pet truly describes a geek. Course, many pets were involved but we mainly focused on cats and dogs. I'm not sure whether my conclusion actually holds some ground but I have the feeling that in my surrounding environment all geeks have cats (myself included). This is why I wanted to collect some data from the community and set this question to rest once and for all :)

So please, vote in the poll and add your thoughts and views under this topic, and in case you selected "Other" be sure to tell us what it is.

Thanks guys and let the bashing begin! ;)

Pets are deprecated, I have upgraded to children 2.0 instead...please install the latest version.

I have a strong opinion about this.

Dogs need a lot of social attention, more than most humans can give them. So consider that as a factor. They are basically wired to be pack animals, and always need reinforcement from the pack leader, which is you. They can't daydream like humans, read books, watch TV, play video games, etc for entertainment.

That's why when you leave them alone, chained, or caged without a place to explore or roam, it's like putting them into a prison of their own mind of desperate boredom and loneliness.

Cats on the other hand, don't care. They are "pride" animals, so if you want, get 2 cats, preferably same gender from the same litter, so they won't get territorial and "mark" their territory if you know what I mean. They'll entertain each other while you are gone.

Usually by typing commands into your computer by walking across the keyboard :) Of course dogs will usually just chew the keyboard and children will poor drinks into the keyboard.

Careful about those upgrades. I went to get the 2.0 upgrade and ended up getting 3.0

Which comes bundles with stress 5.3 and downgrades you to cashflow 0.1 and it's incompatible with all versions of freetime.

Oh yeah we got a cat, lazy good for nothing.....

I vote for dogs but the one i got (BlackLab v7) is more of a demanding goddess and when her humble minion doesn't give her enough worship she has a tenancy to be a vengeful goddess and pulls the power cable out till worship time is over

I also have kids 1.0.15 but has mutated into an independent AI who seems to have power spikes and eradicates notebooks and netbooks on a constant basis. Considering downgrading the ram on that product

Hmmmm, so there is some truth to my cat theory after all :)

/applause to ansichild for the comment about space/time requirements of dogs vs. cats... This seems to be the main issue favoring cats... I mean when us geeks are in front of a PC, we ARE IN FRONT OF A PC and no one is supposed to bother us with the desire to take a walk :)

Oh, and I wasn't expecting a Children=Programs analogy at all, but it did provoke some lols :)

All the best guys!

EDIT: Here's my devil right here :)

I've had both.. mostly dogs and one cat which i liked. The cat was pretty much a neighborhood cat but used to bring us dead birds and stuff on our porch which i hear is a sign of respect and an offering to me. All my dogs have always been faithful, loyal, protective, ect.. Cats dont listen to people.. they do whatever they want, Dogs do whatever you say and love you unconditionally. Even if you smack the shit out of them one night for shitting on the carpet.. cats dont forget that stuff and will hate you forever. Plus if a burgular broke in i would way rather have a german shepard or putbull in my house then a cat for protection..

So I will say Dogs kick Cats ass all day every day, and are way better pets then cats. Your cat is not going to be at the door waiting for when you get home from work wagging its tail and its a pain to wash them. Alot of people I have met that have alot of cats have also been mental.
