That's openbox as the WM and tint2 as the taskbar. This will help you get Arch running for the first time if you've never set anything like it up before.
Despite all of the things I hate about it, it has one redeeming factor: My mom can't seem to break it like she does with everything else on her computer.
The only downside I have found with any distrobution of linux that I've tried is that WINE still sucks. Bad. That takes away basically any gaming you could possibly want to do, which makes me sad T_T
I know that if you "run" (double-click or whatever) an EXE on a samba server, it actually runs on your PC. I've never looked into how exactly Windows goes about doing this, but I'm guessing their setup was something similar to this.

On XP I patch UXTheme so I can use custom .msstyles and I also use Litestep instead of explorer for destkop management. On linux I just use Openbox, Conky, and Tint which are all highly skinnable in themselves.
