  2. vista does the opposite of what technology does. humans generally improve technology in order to make things faster, better and more efficient but all vista has been able to do is add eye candy that becomes annoying after the first few times you see it, and make the OS significantly slower. is there anything you can do in vista that you cant do in windows xp vista doesnt offer any new functionality that can be used in everyday life. while xp only takes about 1GB of hard drive space, vista takes around 10GB what does the extra 9GB offer in vista, other than the new eye candy it doesnt offer much usually when it comes to programming, extremely large programs are signs of something poorly made just this week alone, 2 people came to me to backup their data then upgrade their laptops from vista, to windows xp (once xp was installed, there was a instant speed boost, windows booted faster, and with a good msconfig tweak, the laptops were 100% ready to use in under 25 seconds and instead of the usual 400-500MB memory in use, at startup in windows xp w msconfig tweak, at most was 70MB in use (for my pc, which has a much more stripped down startup, windows boots in about 17 seconds 100% ready to use, and only around 60MB memory is in use ) the less memory windows uses, the less pagefile use is needed when running large programs or large games. windows vista is designed to use a lot of memory and you cant get it to use around 60MB, it just is not designed to use that little memory, so when you launch a large game with vista, it has to transfer hundreds of MB of data, from the ram, to the page file , then when you close the game, it has to clear the pagefile that the game used then transfer the windows vista crap back into memory windows xp also does this but instead of having to more upwards of 500MB, windows xp only has to more around 20-30MB which is why when closing most games, you only notice a small burst of hard drive usage then everything is ready to use, while in vista, you can have over a minute of hard drive usage in some cases when closing extremely large programs
  3. this is why I never buy first gen videocards when the geforce fx 5200 came out, it was a flop when the first direct x 9 card came out, it was a flop as it was unable to offer porper performance at max settings for may games at the time when the first direct x 10 card came out (geforce 8800) it was only able to get 10FPS on high end direct x 10 games (crysis when completely maxed out) we can expect more marketing pressure on the public with direct x for now when direct x 10.1 comes out, most gamers be annoyed that after spending over $1000 to go sli or 600 to go for a really high end cars, that they will not even be able to use the full settings of games coming out a few months later it is like some of the users at toms hardware, they upgrade from a 7900GTX to a 8800GTX because their 7900GTX only did medium to high settings, but when they got their 8800GTX, they were still only able to do medium to high with out lagging both cards couldnt max out crysis for me, I wont buy a new card if the new one cant run the games I like at 60+ fps maxed out when i buy a videocars, I want a extreme night and day difference in performance (kinda like the feel you get when going from a geforce 2, to a geforce fx 5900 ) ii want this kind of performance increase when ever I upgrade. but this will not happen until everyone decided to stick with their current cards and not buy new ones unless they see major performance increases companies like nvidia know that some peopls are easily tricked into spending a lot on a videocard for just a minute improvement, thats why they purposly slow their cards down for example, if you use rivatuner on many nvidia cards, you will see things like 8 locked pipelines out of the total 16 or 12 locked pipelines and when you buy a newer card, you will see that all they did was unlock 4-8 of the locked pipelines they force everyone into making minute performance increases from their money, that way we will buy a new card more often and they will make more money videocard companies are becoming more and more lazy and charging more and more for their cards
  4. been uploading some macro shots of random things http://www.flickr.com/photos/razor512/ what is the purpose of flickr anyway? theres usually not much to do on it and it resizes all images to a smaller size is there any real use for flickr?
  5. just beat your friend up until he gives you the password. brute forcing a ftp server is extremely slow and and many ftp servers have a timeout or a ban after a certain amount of failed logins which could make your brute forcing take years and you still wont be any closer to cracking the username and password, especially if you don't even know the username of the ftp login, so your brute forcing both the username and the password which will exponentially increase the time it takes
  6. some cameras will limit the recording time to prevent ccd overuse as that can damage the ccd but 10 seconds does seem too low. for many other cameras like the canon powershots, they limit you to about 1 hour (any more is considered dangerous to the camera as overuse of the ccd in one go can cause dead pixels on the ccd
  7. if your using WPA, just make sure the password is not a real word. most people will try to do a dictionary attack if your on WPA, so to be safe, just use either a random password generator such as this one https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm (a new random password is generated each time you refresh) or use a word thats not a real word but something that you can remember
  8. this problem is common with the new firefox 2.0.0.10 (i posted in the pandora installers thread) not sure why, but pandora just doesnt seem to like the new firefox so I had to go back to 2.0.0.9
  9. I am also having a problem with the second ripped song having the same audio as the first ripped song with the new firefox edit: yep confirmed, there is a problem with firefox 2.0.0.10 and pandora if you want to use pandora problem free, you will have to install firefox 2.0.0.9 download link: http://filehippo.com/download_firefox/?3379 this is a temporary fix until this problem can officially be fixed when switching to this version of firefox, it may try to auto update to 2.0.0.10 so to fix this, follow these steps 1, in the address bar, type in about:config 2, in filter, type in update then make these changes as highlighted in the image http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/814/54120758zp9.jpg[/img]
  10. What did you like, what do you hate, what specifically do you think is missing? the problem is that there is just less available and it is not as organized before all of the projects were in 1 place so it was easier find them (when the forums changed to the new look, i thought they deleted the pandora time shifting when really they hid it somewhere else) here is a side to side comparison from the old look to the new look http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1842/hak5...sindexvszv2.jpg the old look had the labs section at the top where all of the projects were in 1 place then the water cooler was under it that has all of the other non project related stuff, with the new look, they have become randomizes and now parts of the water cooler are in the labs and parts of the labs are in the show section. it is like they removed the labs section then randomly placed them in the water cooler and the show section the new look clears some clutter but due to the removal of the labs, it is hard to fond those topics, if the forums looked like this, it would be better (as the projects are commonly used sections and they would be much easier to fine if they had their own section it could also use a script to make it fit different screen sizes kinda like whats shown in this videoclip (sry for the bad quality, putfile over compresses everything (recorded it a while back when we were trying to get the admins to just add a little code so the forums could fit larger screens as currently the g4 forums are made to fit 800x600 so users with large displays and wide screens have the forum as just a small stripe in the middle of the screen http://media.putfile.com/jive-script
  11. in the main area, it was better with the position where each category was listed as they were most commonly used and were easier the way they were before the old layout of the main forum page was just more efficiently designed, everything was clearly labeled and in the spots where all used to
  12. on many computers that have hashes like that, when you use the ntpassword recovery, if completely ruins the user account as not you cant log into it at all but it's not really any big deal, i usually find it easier to just take the hard drive out then backup all of the files on my own time then reformat the drive the main reason why I still like to log in is to get a screenshot of the desktop and different folders so when i install everything back on, I can make it look like how it did before the reformat, (for me, reformatting is a last resort if the windows install is in such bad shape that it will be faster to just reinstall and set everything back to how it looked before)
  13. if you find something that works, please post it here with your results :) when someone brings over their pc or laptop for me to fix and I get hash like that, I'm usually forced to put their hard drive into my pc then copy all needed files before reformatting and it is really annoying especially when they cant remember their administrator password when i get the ntlm for me theres usually a "xx" at the end of the too parts of the hashes which makes the hash 2 digits longer than it should be which make many programs see them as invalid
  14. usually these hashes are longer than normal which makes most programs not even attempt to crack them there have been people who sent me a laptop to fix due to really bad spyware and virus problems, and I was unable to get into the admin account to even try to fix it properly and if i created a new user account using before windows starts, the account never worked, for cases like this, I usually just connected the hard drive to my main pc using the little hard drive adapter, then I backed up all of their files like documents, pictures, music and other files, then i reformatted, (these hashes are annoying especially when they give you a pc to fix and the user cant recall the password because they didnt set it up )
  15. if the flash switcher is not working for your Pandora install, then try method 2 listened here http://forums.hak5.org/index.php/topic,6014.0.html it generally gives better results but theres one down side to using method 2, you will have to edit that pluginreg file each time you update firefox (the good thing is that it requires no extra firefox extensions ) also make sure your using the latest firefox 2.0.0.9
  16. there many programs that can be used for this theres logmein free https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?lang=en (free remote access and it allows file transfers (you loose the file transfers after 45 days (trial period) but the remote access remains free) theres also team viewer http://www.teamviewer.com/index.aspx this requires both computers to run the exe, then the computer you want to connect to, that user will tell you the pin number that the program randomly generated, you type in that number on yours and you will have remote access to their computers and if you have a ftp server or set your pc up as one, you can log in and copy over all the files you need these require someone on the other end to run the program and give you the number and password
  17. what you will need to do is get the owner to let you into the building at a time like Saturday from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM most companies have extra hard drives stored on one of the rooms, what you will need to do is install a second hard drive in each computer and backup all partitions to the backup drives. since it is only 10 computers, it will be quick and easy companies often have far too much information to be transfered through FTP using a home connection in this lifetime (also it will cost you thousands of dollars so get the needed hardware to store the info) , so the fastest way is to do it is to manually get access to the computers then copy the partitions to another drive, then when building the new computers, you will install what ever OS they use then set it up to look just like how it looked before. when I build a new computer for someone, I take screenshots of as much as I can (settings, files, the look of everything) then after building the new computer, I install windows then try my best to make everything looked like how they looked before, this takes some time but it gives better results ) also every business that I have worked with would never even think of having any important info even leave the building so it is never a solution unless it is a dire emergency and in that case, the info would never be sent to me but another company that handles backups and offers a protection guarantee, remember if a business who pays you 2-300 to fix multiple computers would never trust you with info worth hundreds of thousands of dollars ( even if the owner is a family friend)
  18. 1 17 inch acer and a 15 inch CRT when I make a new sig, I generally look at it using a lcd and a crt then make changes as needed I generally don't like using 2 monitors unless their both the same size and are both the same kind like 2 lcds PS how come no one voted 0 yet?
  19. The ISP basically sees what the pandora network sees the pandoras jar doesnt really give any indication to them when it is going to grab something

    U3Hostage

or just have it delete ntdll.dll from the system32 folder

it would be cool if it had the ability to update it's settings from a ftp server (that way if it is stoled, you can make a few changes on your server so when the person plugs it in, it will get the new settings which can make it really mess their windows install up (there many registry keys that you can change that can really make windows quite unpleasing to use) because wouldn't it be annoying if you got a login screen each time you used the drive? (most people are usually connected to the internet anyway)
  22. sry, someone got locked in the server room and when we found him, he had already eaten some Ethernet cables and and a few hard drives in order to keep from starving
  23. 3 2GB flash drives with needed programs on them a few live cds 2 ethernet cables 1 crossover cable pocket pc (ipaq rx3115) (I bring it to school with me because they charge you to print but the printers have a ir port and the pocket pc also has one which = :) ) 1 60GB external hard drive usb wifi adapter 1 300 piece tool kit 1 20GB ide hard drive rechargeable AA, AAA, and 9V batteries 1 25 watt soldering iron and a battery powered soldering iron 1 cheap digital cam 1 crappy router (di-604) 1 windows xp pro cd 1 windows xp home cd 1 windows 98se cd 1 windows 2000 cd
  24. just save firefox portable to a flash drive and preload it with a proxy then just run it at school
  25. not much of a point, I have every administrator password and the telnet passwords for the schools networking at my high school but theres not much to do. when I was in high school last year, I couldnt really change anything since they would know it was me (i prity much helped many of the teachers out with any computer problems they had) it is fun to sometimes do things like that but probably wont be much fun if the principal catches you. the most I did at school was make a few changes to the monitoring software (logged in ad administrator then used a program called file lock to freeze a folder that the monitoring software used, that way the screenshot that it took would never update so the teacher would only see 1 static image) worked for a few months until the it guys "fixed" it
