    ReadyBoost

ready boost doesnt help much it may make some larger programs open a little faster but it doesnt increase the performance of the programs
  2. shownotes are usually good but it depends on how there used i generally run into shows and podcasts that they talked about something cool even showed the long link, but in the shownotes, there for some reason not there, but instead links to things that i cant afford it happens to every web show once in a while even on hak5 there was one episode where they talked about a subdomain scanner where you could type in a a page for example forums.g4tv.com and it will list all subdomains like forums2.g4tv.com, forums3.g4tv.com and so on but for some reason i cant find a download to the episode and searching the wiki that contains all show notes, theres nothing that even talks about it
  3. has to be photoshopped no one in their right mind would do that thats impossible to remove http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/6910/bsodtattooro9.jpg[/img]
  4. my pc runs vista with no problem the only problem i have with vista is that it is not an improvement. it offers no new real functionality and it doesnt seem any more secure, all of the pc's i have been fixing lately were users who had their vista pc's infected with trojans and spyware to a point where (on one of the pc's ) it wouldn't even go into any user account, it just auto logs into 1 of the accounts automatically and fills the screen with ads that don't close (even in safemode ) even with all of the UAC nag screens they still get their pcs in such bad condition and whats even worst is that they are usually infected but don't do anything about it until it gets to a point where i am called to fix it. and to make things worst. when backing up their files and taking screenshots to make the reinstall look just like how it looked before, many of these users run banking software and other programs like turbotax and many other programs that deal with private info. (not the best idea when a scan with avg on many of them (that are able to log in and actually run things) will find around 500 infections what is the point of microsoft making this crap enabled by default? it is like me walking up to a random person on the street and asking them "can I do it?" , what use is it to them if they don't know what i am going to do? they will most likely ask me "do what?" but too bad you cant ask vista "do what?" and expect it to tell you something like " would you like to install this trojan that logs all of your keystrokes and sends the recorded info to a person who will use it to possibly steal money from you" it just basically gives them a yes or no answer. and the reason why many users get their pcs in such bad condition is because they click yes to everything with out even knowing what it is and vista just asks you the same questions over and over and what makes things even worst is that every computer that i have fixed in the past 3 months had nortons running but unable to function properly, (auto protection did not do the job of protecting the user, and to make things even worst, these users in many cases paid for the nortons software because the sales person tricked them into buying it) vista is not any more secure than windows xp because theres no way to secure a os more than xp is already secure. if you give the user control over the pc then the os is only as secure as the user and the only solution to the security is and for vista performance, getting a faster pc is not the answer because on many overclocking forums and gaming forums, many users with quad cores and 8800 ultra SLI are moving moving the windows xp and many that build them self, are buying copies of windows xp because they get higher benchmarks (those users generally also overclock in order to get the highest score possible ) (a upgrade is not a upgrade if all it does is slows you down) when car makers come out with a new car that doesnt have any new features compared to their older model, you will generally see changes like more of the car being carbon fiber to reduce weight in order to make the car faster and reduce under steer even on the microsoft website and any ad they have and any presentations they have, they generally only talk about the new UI and it's eye candy if you disable all visuals you will find that vista looks almost exactly like windows xp just with the settings located at harder to get to locations requiring you to go through more windows and clicks to get to a setting where you could et to in 3 clicks in windows xp and also everything acting more sluggish vista is simply less efficient
  5. microsoft wouldnt get so much hate if only they would make a OS that actually worked instead of focusing of adding eye candy, they should work on improving the speed and performance of it would you upgrade from a geforce 8800 ultra, to a geforce 6200? when we upgrade, we do it for the fact that we will get more speed and performance. it the 8800 ultra was the same speed as the geforce 6200, would anyone upgrade from a 6200, to a 8800 ultra? and what if the 8800 ultra was slower? i understanding going from 98, to XP since it added support for more memory and more cpu cores larger hard drives and ntfs so we coule have those 8GB iso files we love so much but going from XP to vista offers nothing new to the user other than some crappy visuals which everyone will get tired of every benchmark out right now shows that vista is much slower than xp, if it was faster then everyone would be more willing to upgrade but since it is slower most gamers and businesses wont get it because most businesses will see slower speed as less productivity and gamers will just see slower boot times, sluggish UI and lower frame rates what most os makers need to learn is that faster speed and performance sells more than crappy visuals that are only cool the first 5 times you use them
  6. a pencil makes a great weapon, there very sharp and in the perfect shape for getting rid of vampires who steal your mp3 players also, hide your mp3 player in your coat that way someone cant run and grab it also, if theres someone who steals mp3 players in your area, this is what you do, get some photo paper and your CAD software ready, and try to make the best paper mp3 player you can. then walk around the area with it in the open when the person comes to steal it, make it the last thing they will ever do. if possible do this near a store or area when visible cameras that just in case, there will be video saying that you acted in self defense and if you have the license to own a fire arm, then remember, shoot twice, you will have a better chance of taking them down. at 20 feet, aim for the head, 40 feet and further, aim for the chest as standard bullets are not very aerodynamic and are greatly effected by the wind and they can drift by as much as 2 feet from your target

    Hacked

i have dealt with some really nasty ones a long time ago, a user kept complaining about their system restore wont enable it's self and they kept getting lots of dll errors so when i took a look at it, I forgot the name of the trojan, but it was keylogger and also used for phishing the person used NOD32 but it didn't protect them from it. (and a full scan with it would only find 1 infected file which it would remove, but it would come back and the running process of it would also come back) I eventually got rid of it using a live cd (which was able to see the infected files that were invisible to windows and nod32 ) but windows was in such bad shape that i couldn't get it working right. so i just took screenshots of the desktop, start menu and some folders (backed up all of the music and documents) then i reinstalled windows and tried my best to make everything look exactly like it did before (just with out the problems) well at least i got paid $50 for fixing their problem since the person had a lot of software used in their home business that is annoying to setup. (never mix limewire or any other p2p with a pc for business use and when ever you download any music or anything else p2p, right click on the file then scan it before you run it. many trojans will usually get past the auto protection but not a regular scan)
  8. for situations like this, it is best to rename the file after ripping it for the first movement add a 1 behind the name the odds of each song playing one after the other is very low and even if they did, you should have enough time to rename the songs but it would be cool if pandora could add numbers to the end of the songs like how firefos adds a 2 at the end of a download if you already downloaded it, instead of overwriting based on file name, it adds a number at the end many downloaders do this, would be a nice feature for pandora and any other downloader that doesnt have this feature
  9. they made it really hard to find the site
  10. i bet there would be a few idiots who buy it it is the least functional laptop on the planet many mac users boast about how well their macs work for media creation so suppose you want to rip your audio cd collection, (you will find it a little harder to do) , so you decide, no cd drive, i will just transfer it from my main PC provided that i didnt sell it so i could afford this crap (or god forbid a college student mistakenly buys this) so you cant import your cd's directly so you rush home to connect it to your main pc, (sadly it lacks the connectivity found in $30 pda's ) so you then grab your Ethernet cable to connect it to your router, but after a hour of searching, you cant find any way to connect that cable to it so you use the wireless now after that whole mess you finally have your music on your crap laptop only to find out that you now have almost no hard drive space left because the laptop was very affordable so you could understand why they couldn't put a better hard drive in there ;) so now that you have everything ready. you begin to enjoy your 13 inch iphone that lacks half of it's functionality until some time later when you see that 5 hour battery only lasing 5 minutes. So you look for the battery to see if theres anything wrong and also for a model number so you can buy a new one, but after a hour of looking, you cant find the battery compartment, so you call apple and they gladly offer to replace the battery for you for the low low price of $200 :) but you cant afford that much as your probably still paying off the cost of the laptop so you search for a replacement battery so you can open it your self and replace the battery so when taking it apart, you find that the battery is in the worst place possible eventually you replace the battery while annoyed to a level where humans can not even think of
  11. the ir in my pocket pc (ipaq rx3115 has a pretty good range but the built in remote software is not the best) i mainly have my pocket pc remote (nevo) to control the tv, sound system and dish network dvr. since it allows you to record commands, i can have it automatically, change all sound settings and volume to the levels that i like them in the morning and after doing that it will turn everything off. it also allows tb b gone type function but it is too slow as it has a built in delay and it will take weeks to record a long enough command for it to cycle through all 300 codes and the l second delay between remote codes also makes it hard (it is like they wanted to make sure people cant use it for this) the range seems to be around 50 feet (tested it in an store by turning a tv off and back on ) (the only problem is that since the led is hidden behind the plastic, it's effects are not as wide ) if i could remove that 1 second delay when cycling through remote codes, i would take the time to have it cycle through all 300 of them
  12. I want to try to make a software version of tv b gone for pocket pc's (would be really good to have :) )
  13. on an episode of hak5 live, they talked about a certain website that had a subdomain scanner that will basically work like if you type in for example forums.com, it will list forums1.com stuff.forums.com and so on (i think chris gerling was the one who showed the website) one of my friends was looking for a tool like that and i remember it being on a episode of hak5 live but cant seem to find all of the live episodes

  20. no family came over either because of bad weather but tomorrow i will be buying my self some rechargeable batteries for christmas :)
  21. why do i always get clothes for Christmas? clothes are boring. now if i could connect the shirt up so my tv and pop in a cd and play some games then Christmas would be fun, but for now, i keep getting boring presents who else had a crappy Christmas?
  22. wtf i selected all of the worst answers possible and it still said i am worth over $5000 and from the answers i gave, it would be a shock if any of the organs works if someone really had those problems
  23. I generally keep multiple virus scans installed, but i have none of them in my startup, i just use them as on demand scanners like how you would use adaware or spybot. as long as you know to keep your self safe, you will be fine also one thing I recommend is making a 4-8GB partition on your hard drive, then install a second copy of windows that copy will be your testing OS, if you really want to run something but don't trust it, run it first in that OS (ps make sure you hide the other partitions (for me partition magic does this automatically, each partition is invisible from each other ) and if you have extra hard drive space, then create a 2-3GB partition and install a 3rd copy of windows, that will be your back up windows install, (in that one, only install your favorite browser, and drivers and update it once in a while, do your best to keep that install as safe as possible. if your main windows install craps out or if your second windows install for testing gets completely messed up then you will be happy to know that you can restore it in under 5 minutes by having partition magic overwrite that partition with a copy of the back up windows install (windows may only take 30 minutes to install, but it takes days to fully set up ) better to give up 2-3GB and turn os reinstalls into a 5 minute job )
  24. which version of firefox are you using? there is a problem with certain versions of firefox http://forums.hak5.org/index.php/topic,6014.0.html
