  1. while many of these infections can be removed if you have the time since many trojans make so many system changes and cause so much damage, it is usually almost impossible to fix all of the damage done so it is generally faster to do a fresh install
  2. yep, did you select this option when saving the raw file has to be non interleaved to retain the original code or it will be corrupt
  3. I wonder if they will remove this limitation in photoshop cs4 which is suppose to support cuda or some other kind of gpu acceleration
  4. everyone is currently out looking for cute dogs, cats, and foxes to take pictures of
  5. I always make my own backgrounds now
  6. I dual boot 2 copies of windows xp pro and 1 copy of ubuntu and one thing that I notice is that for everyday use, windows is just easier and quicker to use. you wouldn't believe how frustrating it is to get proper audigy 2zs drivers working in ubuntu no matter how you word it, command line will never beat point and click the time it takes for someone to do this in linux, I could install at least 30 different programs in windows (not that I would want to) http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-b...eisty-fawn.html while command line is good for certain things, linux makes too much use of it making simple things that can be done in 1 or 2 clicks in windows, take a great deal of time in a linux based os thats why windows has so much of the PC market no matter how you put it, the average user just finds it easier to double click on a program to install it than to go through all the steps in a linux os I still use ubuntu a lot but for now it is just not useful for me to use as a main OS I am not hating or linux or anything but for getting everyday things done easily and quickly, windows just does it better as it is able to make almost everything GUI based
  7. if you saw how much memory running the crappy sidebar was using, you would disable it quickly and silentknight329 the main problem with vista is that it is sluggish it can still be fast but not as fast as XP things that generally load instantly in windows xp now take a great deal of cpu time and hard drive time to load because microsoft decided to make just about every menu and setting window bloated and less tabbed most setting windows in xp are tabbed based but in vista, you have to open 1 window that has a bloated ui around it which makes it take much longer to open, that window then has links to other windows that also take a while to load vista would be ok if they didn't do stupid things to make it annoying to use. almost every menu and setting now has it's own window instead of being in 1 tabbed window and they take longer to open, it is just extra time and work to get to the same menu's and settings that you would use in windows xp vista may not be slow, but it is not fast either an upgrade should not slow you down, would you upgrade from a geforce 8800GTX to a 9800GTX if the 9800GTX benchmarked lower than the 8800 and cost much more? thats like adding rims that weigh 70 pounds each to your car to make it look nicer but in the end all it is doing is cutting your gas mileage by 15% and reducing your top speed
  8. the problem is that they are so greedy that many of them don't even want to give out a demo of the game and if they do give a demo, it has such little content that you cant get an idea of how the gameplay is and on top of that, they don't even want people seeing a second of the game with out paying first because of that people will pirate it and the no DRM is also a plus games get more and more expensive each year and they also get worst. many people are not willing to pay for a game thats $50-60 for a game thats really short. games become shorter each year, since they only seem to focus on graphics, they wind up with game engines that are so hard to work with that it will take too long to make a good length game all of this + the DRM is more than enough to push people into pirating a game and no people will not pirate the game then buy the game to support the developers, when they pirate the game, it is because they feel that the company doesn't deserve their money and steam is one of the worst of the bunch steam games are deeply tied with the steam servers, if the company decided to die or move on to something different, then your steam games will no longer work either, and you will have to get them cracked if you want to still play them. with a pirated copy of a game you have pros: No DRM so your game is sure to run and not complain that your dvd drive or some other thing is not happy with it Your CD drives last longer since there's no wear and tear of having it constantly spin up when ever you want to play a game Longer battery life on gaming laptops because the energy hogging cd drive will not be used your game is sure to run long after the company dies out or moves on a more stable 12V rail (if you test with a multimeter, when a cd drive spins up or down, the 12v raid changes slightly even on a high end PS) Less bugs due to no DRM = no errors and instability caused by the DRM Faster start up times in windows (Most DRM adds multiple drivers which run during the start up to monitor your hardware, a fully cracked game doesn't contain the files needed to install those drivers) Cons: getting a cracked game from an untrusted source may result in the downloading of a game thats infected with a trojan so which seems like a better deal to you a $60 game that has DRM which causes stability problems and can prevent your game from running if it is not happy with your hardware or if the company dies out or or if your cd is scratched or lost or a game thats $0 and has none of those problems people will pay for convenience (small businesses in the area generally hire me to do IT work for them, (work in which the owner of the company can easily to them self, so why hire me for it, one work convenience. it is easier for them to have someone else do the work while they relax and do what ever else they want) DRM kills the shelf life or any game that has it. would you buy a car for $50,000 that only lasts 2 years before breaking down beyond repair or would you rather spend $50,000 on a car that will last 100 years? i bet you wouldn't even waste money on the car that will only last 2 years same with games. games are already buggy and unstable on their own, don't add extra buggy software like DRM to make it even worst , no one will pay for that,
  9. some infections are able to hide from the virus scanners when run. is you do a lot of p2p never rely on your virus scans auto protection as 9 out of 10 times it will not protect you if you want to test, install a virtual machine, and install a goof virus scanner and turn on its auto protection, then download a file you know to be infected then scan it, if it is infected, don't delete it, run it (I have tried it with avast and avg and my old copy of nortons system works 2003 and on all of them, most of the files run were not detected by the auto protection or detected after the file already did things like change the desktop background or disable almost everything in windows or do some kind of damage
  10. all it does is encourages people to pirate. due to all of the problems the drm with mass effect had, there was a fully working cracked copy up for download the first day it came out, someone was able to crack it with in a day and put it up for download so people only had to wait a few hours to get a DRM free game games with just simple drm, like just a cd key needed and thats it, they take weeks or even a few months to wind on a p2p network the most you may find with in that time are cd keys hosted on those malicious sites that use serials to pull people in then using multiple exploits, infect their pc with a nearly impossible trojan or spyware to remove the more annoying the DRM the faster the game is cracked
  11. any company that can make a site exactly like stage 6 will probably crush youtube in a few years because with stage 6, the quality was always hundreds of times better than youtube and the videos actually loaded instead of going half way then not loading any further until you refreshed the page a few times I miss my 1080p videos :(
  12. for me, I cant stand to have more than 12 running processes at startup (windows for me also shouldn't use more than 85MB memory at startup, the less windows uses, the more there is left over to run the applications that you like, benchmark scores also go up )
  13. which security software are you running? some like to filter web traffic and can often cause some slowdown (though not noticeable for normal web use, it can cause some lag and problems with punkbuster when dealing with some games) if possible are you able to benchmark your connection by running a program like everest then enabling s shared folder on your laptop, have your main desktop pc transfer over a large file and see how fast it goes. also on your router, are you using any special QOS rules which could be limiting bandwidth to the laptop (also can you try connecting to your neighbors wireless or any other open one and see if it is still slow? )
  14. do you have all of the proper drivers installed, (especially the videocard and motherboard drivers, (generic drivers are slow, and those are what windows will use until you install the official drivers) also can you post a HJT log so we can see whats running on your pc. I have had people call me saying that their pc is too slow and no matter how many times they reinstalled, their PC was still slow, and when I had a look at their pc, the problem turned out to be the user reinstalling AOL, kazaa (old spyware filled one from back in the day) weatherbug (program that gives weather updates as a cover to it's spyware) and many other programs ps windows is extremely slow if the proper videocard drivers are not installed thats why when you uninstall your video card drivers and download newer ones, while windows is using the generic drivers, everything is very slow, scrolling takes like 1 second to take effect and everything is sluggish
  15. flash 9 caches differently and i assume is much more complicated to make pandoras jar use thats why i did a installer to combine it with firefox portable. too much content is based on flash 9 and pandoras jar also needs a older version of firefox, cant have people using a outdated browser as their main browser, it is very unsafe to do that so they have the portable firefox just for pandoras jar and they keep their main browser updated and customized to what the user wants. this ensures that pandoras jar will work on more pc's and it will also improve security as users will not be using a outdated browser as their main browser
  16. depends on the printer:) whats really weird is that when searching google, i saw some extremely expensive printers open to this flaw, someone could kill like $300 worth of ink in one night if they print out a a few thousand page long color sheet showing using the full CMYK just hope ad companies don't start exploiting this, it will be even worst than the cellphone telemarketing calls i had one of those before i could register for the do not call list (just wish the government could do a do not spam list that will target spammers who fill peoples junk mail folders, using the full force of the military to track them down and test out if a spammer and a few thousand bullets can occupy the same space :). war on spammers is a much more noble cause than war on Iraq, and best of all, there will be far less casualties since our military is sure to have more firepower than the spammers. If it is successful in the US then with luck, other countries will join in and with the combine force of every army on the planet, junk email will be almost nonexistent)

do you have a multimeter? they will tell you which is + and which is - thats what I used to find out for mine
  18. but stressballs cost money, trashing the place is a great free substitute for a stressball and in times of a recession, you have to do everything you can to avoid unnecessary purchases

don't really need a fan to be there, just anything that can drain the battery down completely some batteries have this problem where they eventually forget how much power they have and begin to hold less, and generally draining them completely will fix that problem, just don't do it too often as batteries hate doing that and it can shorten the life or it if done too much
  20. seems fun, great way to work out while also getting rid of the stress
  21. updated to correct 1 small problem with it @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml); @-moz-document domain("hak5.org") { } body { font-family: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, "Trebuchet MS", Sans-Serif, Georgia, Courier, "Times New Roman", Serif; line-height: 135%; padding: 0px; width: auto !important; } #ipbwrapper { text-align: left; width: auto !important; margin: 10px auto 10px; padding: 0px 20px 20px 20px; } add that script to the stylish extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108 and the hak5 forums will fit any screen size (i made sure the script would not effect the main page since the content there seems to fit that size well ) video of it in action http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=73e5bd&s=3

if the battery is not charging completely then you may need to completely drain it. it happened with my pocket pc battery, I connected the battery to 40mm fan after using the pocket pc to run the battery down after fully draining it, i charged it back up again and the battery life estimated in the power options went from 5 hours, to 5.6 hours with max backlight
  23. if the printer has enough memory, you can download the pi file used to break a record by getting pie to almost 5 billion decimal places (imagine printing that out ) i wonder if there will ever be a fix for this security flaw

replacing the stock thermal compound with arctic silver 5 will sometimes lower the temperature a little also see if you can keep the fans at their full speed as they often don't unless the ambient temp is really high
