    help

I'd hate to be a whore for Steve Gibson, but you might want to try spinrite
  2. ok, so i went and found out there is an official release + a "coffee" fork (the guy who forked it has a name that sounds like coffee) that's the difference between these two packages
  3. ok, so according to this, you already have the module installed. dpkg says that you're downgrading the module, dpkg - warning: downgrading linux-rtl8187se-modules from 1023.2@2.6.24.22.24 to 04coffee@2.6.27.10.13. however, i think that there is a mistake somewhere, or that the version of the newer driver is written in a way that causes dpkg to misinterpret the version number, because the one that you already have is version 2.6.24.22.24 and the newer one is 2.6.27.10.13 if you already have the module installed, then i would think that simply upgrading it will not do anything. It should already just work. lines like this one mean that the package depends on other packages that are either absent, or present at too low a version. linux-rtl8187se-modules depends on linux-generic (>= 2.6.27.10.13); however: Version of linux-generic on system is 2.6.27.9.13. the reason why this happend in your case, i'm guessing, is because you downloaded the version for 8.10, when you're using ubuntu 8.04. The version you have is already newer than the version for 8.04 on the website that i gave you also, to be honest, i don't understand what the difference between these two drivers are linux-rtl8187se-modules-04coffee@2.6.27.10.13.deb linux-rtl8187se-modules-1023@2.6.27.10.13.deb are you sure that the problem is not that you don't have the correct modules, but that you're just not configuring the network properly?
  4. oooh, establishment, establishment; you always know what's best for me
  5. I was wondering, if you get the Aspire one with XP, do you also get their customised version of Linux, or is that extra? Most of the Linux distros have been installed on the Aspire One or the EEEPC. I know that debian has a version customised for these netbooks that can then simply point to the i386 repositories. Instructions on how to install are here. From what I have seen of them, I would say that the Linux GUI on the Aspire One is very good. I don't think that there is really any advantage to using XP, since every single app that you might want to use is available on Linux and where XP might have an advantage on any other computer, it's really lost on netbooks. ie. gaming is going to suck on XP on a netbook anyway, etc.
  6. You can't even kill an innoscent child in cold blood these days without pesky citizens protesting about it What is this world coming to? Also, what is that green lazer beam?
  7. I'm going to guess that you're either 13 years old, making you too young for the made up university program of "hacking" at the made up university you never mentioned you were from, or you're just somebody we know playing a joke.
  8. I saw the drawing and recognised it straight away So many mispent hours on the Sega...
  9. I'm not exactly sure where you got the tar package from, but I was able to find pre-compiled versions of the RTL8187SE wifi module for Ubuntu. Assuming that this is the module that corresponds to your wifi card, the easist way to get your wireless working would be to download the .deb package. I found it here and according to the author's website the latest version of the package is this one. There is a longer list of other packages, including for 8.04 here. I'm pretty sure that it should install with dpkg --install name-of-package.deb If it tells you that there are unmet dependencies, try apt-get install name-of-whatever-it-complains-about name-of-something-else Hope that helps. Also, should mention, I've never used it, but I believe that Linux Mint is basically Ubuntu made easy (which was supposed to be Debain made easy). You might want to try that.
  10. Why do we still write software by typing letters into text files? I have been using modeFRONTIER for an engineering project for the last 2 weeks. This is a program which manages other programs during simulations. There is a panel in which you place your program flow. There are little panels with arrows going to the next piece of operation. Nothing could be simpler. I think that entering text into .txt files is old and outdated. This is so much easier to learn and use. Why is it that programming takes place in text files?
  11. OMG I always thought you were black
  12. OK. That's just being silly My laptop is always 1280x800 Don't LCD screens have only one suitable screen resolution? I have found that changing it to anything else makes things really ugly. It looks like anti-aliasing gone to shit. Except for some games though, I have found lower resolutions make it look a bit cooler actually.
  13. Sneakers is one of my favourite movies of all time. As a kid when I saw the phone call scene the first time I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen in a movie. It's also not lame in a way that alot of other movies tend to be. Whoever the writers were they I think they did a pretty good job. Also, apparently the part when Janek is giving a talk and Bishop attends, all of the maths on the wall was from some guy at RSA (the company) so that it would be actual maths related to cryptography
  14. I like scamschool, but i would have to agree with Moonlit that it is too short. I find it annoying that it comes out once a week and goes for only a few mins. If it was daily at that length it would be better. I like diggnation. Kevin and Alex are funnt
  15. Apparently safari is the only browser which actually passes that test. I did some tests just now FF 2.0.0.13: 52/100 Opera 9.27: 46/100 II6: 11/100 Konqueror 3.5.8 in Ubuntu 7.10: dies when attempting the test They are all of the browsers I have available to me right now I'm curious to know how the implementations of the features that this tests actually effect the experiences of users and web developers. I'm also to understand that the EMCA documentation on javascript is actually different to the way that javascript is actually implemented in some cases. The official documentation of the standard in some ways is in fact "non-standard"
  16. I would just like to say that I have this exact problem. I hadn't ever heard of anyone else who noticed it and so I just thought that it was something that I was doing, because I normally browse either with Privoxy or the http proxy at university. The addons that I have with FF2 at the moment are [li]noscript[/li] [li]cookiesafe[/li] [li]greasemonkey[/li] [li]Zotero (a little app. for collecting bibliographic references, I have found it to be really useful)[/li] [li]flashgot[/li] Zotero I installed only a few weeks ago, I don't think that it's that because I've been noticing this for years. greasemonkey I also only installed recently, and I only have one script installed for it (an add blocking script for yahoo mail (which I hate so much but am forced to use)) I have noticed that this happens on digg allot, but also other sites. Digg a site that I'm on alot though, so I guess it's the one that I would have noticed more easily. I think it also does not matter whether they have scripting enabled or not.
  17. I don't think a platform has to be closed in order to attract game development. There's this thing called a PC that also has games on it. (Before you start complaining, we all know MS makes Windows and the operating system is clearly not open source; but the API, apart from a few hidden features is almost fully known and it is possibly to run any application on the platform without it needing to be digitally signed and verified by MS at the cost of thousands of dollars per application. So for all intents and purposes (if you're a game developer) Windows is an open platform.) I would guess though that managers at a game company would be bothered by the knowledge that their code is un-DRMed and open to be copied. I'm not contradicting myself from what I said before. These same managers oversee games for the PC. People like this are just that retarded. (There is DRM for PC games but it crap and never works, PC games are copied within minutes whereas platform games usually require a $75 modchip, hours soldering and fingers crossed. Which almost nobody ever bothers with). The thing that is most important though, is MONEY. If a game developer is going to make money by creating a game for this platform, they will do it. If you think that if there is going to be money to be made that these people are going to pass on the opportunity you need brainscans. Therefore, the platform is going to need to be popular. Nobody is making a game (or paying somebody to port it from another platform) if 2 people are going to buy it. As with all things, the platform needs a user base to attract games. It needs alot of games to attract a user base. It probably will not go anywhere. (Or I could be back here 5 years from now playing on my ASUS gaming machine eating my word burger, who knows?)
  18. exactly i think i need a blog

    DVD Ripper?

DVD Decrypter has some problems with some of the latest copy protection. Ripit4me works together with DVD Decrypter and can fix some of the most recent DRM issues.
  20. I get it, ewes are sheep. You don't need to tell me or anybody else. Last night I was playing cards with my gf's family and her auntie found the pretentious need to correct my gf's brother on his use of the word "youse" in place of "you", the standard 2nd person plural pronoun. To my regret I didn't say anything as she told him, "ewes (pronounced just the same as youse) is a female sheep". She then continued to say that she loved the English language and felt compelled to correct him when he was misusing it. I hate people like this SO much. It is so pretentious and obnoxious. (For reasons beyond the fact that ewes are actually several female sheep. A ewe is a female sheep. Nobody who I have ever heard say the old "ewe is a sheep" phrase has ever said it properly.) None of these people actually speak English "properly" (standard English for any variant of English, ie. American English or in this case Australian English, is actually spoken by very few people, usually the society's upper class and is quite rare. (How many Americans do you hear that sound like Stewie from Family Guy or the guys from Frasier)). Ask any linguist and they will all tell you that the "proper" way of speaking is completely subjective and in regards to practicality is often less useful. Almost all people speak in a manner that deviates phonetically, and often also lexically from the standard, usually also the case for person with the sheep fetish telling you off (so feel free to point that out to them). Use of the word "youse" is actually very common and has a tremendous practical benefit. It is very old and in the case of Australia has likely become common due to Irish immigration, early in Australia's development. Being obnoxious and pretentious makes the people around you feel unpleasant as well as revealing to them the pathetic person that you are underneath, clearly several times worse than possibly revealing yourself to be just as normal as any other person by saying "youse". Ah, that feels better. </rant>
  21. I thought that's what it was initially, but to be honest it seems really silly. For one thing, I have 1.4GB of RAM, which really should be enough. I don't see any mention on the truecrypt site saying you need obscenely large amounts of RAM for this to work and that it won't otherwise. You would think that if that much memory is not enough they would at least mention it. Additionally, AES was designed to be suitable on smartcards and very low spec devices like that. I really don't think that a proper computer is going to have any problem with it. I'm pretty sure that there is something else wrong. Which I find really annoying because it still means that I can't get it to work.
  22. I actually thought something like Robocode might be fun to do as a competition. http://robocode.sourceforge.net/ We could all make little robots in java and let them fight it out to find a winner. Basically you write an algorythm out in java that describes the behaviour of a robot that fights other robots. After a few rounds of shooting at each other you have a winner.
  23. I tried to encrypt my whole drive with truecrypt 5.0 After installing and going through the first part of the process I was told that I needed to restart to continue. I restart and at the boot loader I'm told to enter my passphrase. After entering it I get a warning beep and I'm told that I don't have enough memory to continue. The computer has just >1.4GB of RAM. Anyone have any idea why I might be having a problem.
  24. I would never have thought that there was a 2:1 ratio of mac to PC users. That's kinda cool. The Vista numbers are unusually low given that the current user base is now something like 14% overall. Also, I would have had no idea that people still use IE5. From memory, the last time I happened to use it the entire web came out crappy and retarded looking
