  1. LAWL! you sound like someone I know. (that's the only reason why they bought an arduino, for card readers, and cellular... um.. fun) though come to think of it... I do need a jtag cable!!!! (glad you made me think of it!) list: led.. led.. lcd.. resistors.. capacitors.. breadboard... JTAG!!.. hehehe.
  2. Personally, my opinion is since it is a media/file server for personal use, I this looks just about right except I wouldn't go with that high priced case and mobo. I would go as cheap as I could for the case, and go with a mobo with less options (because since it's going to be a stand alone server your not going to use most of it anyways), and just stuff it with as much ram as you can afford. The speed of a core i7 or higher end i5 just doesn't overshadow the price difference for this application. Also I would go with gskill ram. (but that's just personal preference + cheap) ***ALSO*** I would go with a smaller slimmer case, and upgrade the video card a tiny bit with one that can do 1080p + HDMI so you can use it as an htpc, while also using it as a file/media server (and thus integrate it and hide it away)
  3. Well dunno if there is any tips I can give for ordering (you know as much as I do at this point on it). I am going to make an account the day before, log in as early as I can and put it all in my cart, and then just wait for the proper time, so I can be at checkout when it STARTS to *hopefully* ensure I get everything (or anything for that matter) I tried to look up some traffic stats but all the web statistics sites do not give a concrete number, just an average put against all internet traffic (but then billions could turn out to be like .0001% that way maybe???) here is one link: http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/sparkfun.com Does anyone know if this is a high traffic site or not? It does show that the traffic has ramped recently on the site, but being so close to after christmas (26th, last update) it's hard to gage if that is just from the holidays, and I am sure that there are a lot of people who never even saw the link to the article so.. who knows. Of course that kind of leads me to the idea that maybe I shouldn't have posted about it on here (thus having to compete with less people to get my free stuff) but then, any way I can I like to give back to the community so, I don't mind telling all of you :)
  4. So I was rooting around on sparkfun.com the other day and they just updated their servers, and they mentioned something of a 'free day'. Got me curious, so I clicked the link. Come to find out they are giving away $100 worth of whatever you want on that day for free! They are just asking you pay shipping. I swear this isn't some b.s. "get this free cause we just like phishing" scam. Here is the link!http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/news.php?id=305 You can find the link on the main page of the website, just read the little article about their new servers and you'll find it. So what would you be thinking of getting? At first I was thinking I was going to just get one higher priced thing, and then a few really cheap things, but thinking of it more, I believe I am going to get a slew of cheaper stuff, so that way when I start my projects I can have a little bit of an assortment kit :) Also here is the details on this: $100 max per household You pay shipping Limit of $100,000 in giveaways for the day Starts 9AM MST January 7th, 2010 Ends 11PM MST January 7th, 2010 (or when we hit $100k, whichever comes first) Rainchecks for popular items will be allowed ... ... There is no special code to type in. But you get only one order on Free Day, so spend it well! Only one $100 credit per household. We ask that you respect this limit and don't try to abuse this gift. There is no minimum or maximum order. You can spend more than $100, the balance of which will be charged to your method of payment. Only Credit Card and Paypal orders will be eligible for the $100 credit. We don't want to have people tying up inventory with POs, wire transfers, checks in the mail, or lost faxes. You will see whether or not your order qualifies for a credit in the checkout process. Free Day does not apply to our distributors. Sorry! Gift Cards cannot be bought on Free Day. Any returns from Free Day will be exchanged for the same item. Every order isn't going to ship on Free Day, or for a few days after. We've got extra tape guns on hand, but please be patient and give us some time to catch up! We are ratcheting up inventory for Free Day, but backorders (a.k.a. rainchecks) are allowed on most items (some items we simply can't get anymore). We'll get you your goodies just as soon as we can get them back in stock. So basically the first $100,000 worth of orders will be done. After that, it's over so I know I am going to be clicking and adding fast which means that I am going to go ahead and find out what I want ahead of time :X ***BTW, no I do not work for sparkfun.com (wish I did tho..)***
  5. @MRGRIM: Yah I tell everyone the same thing, but they still give me stuff. Hell, when my mom kept badgering me as to what to get me, I finally just told her, "here, i'll give you a challenge.. I want an arduino duemilanove." and well.. she gave it to me in the hacktronics box it came in :)
  6. pretty awesome. I got an arduino (2009), a belkin laptop cooler, and a mr. potato head shirt (I'll have to post a pic cause this is one awesome shirt) Merry Christmas Hak5, Hak5forums!!!
  7. Well, I believe his message is stating don't worry about it (course not in an asshat way, just saying he knows we care and etc.) so let's just back off of it, and hope he feels better soon. btw. darren if your reading this, did they ever find out what happened to ya? By some of the way you explain it, it sounds @ one point like maybe they were thinking you have a urinary tract infection.
  8. So the encryption just needs to be changed. Maybe not so much the encryption constantly changing as the possibility and window of decrypting the signal changing.. *here's a theory I have had in my brain for some few months* Linear (but looks random) encryption based on only private keys hashed against time. The private keys can be randomly generated by the laptop before each take off with a ttl wire that you just plug into the plane to send the private key (or keys) to initiate it, and the exact time of the laptop with maybe a 5ms window. Hell you could use an arduino for this, so if worse came to worse.. what? $30 added to the cost of the plane? ez and cheap fix :) Sort of like bluetooth but different and harder to crack. *and bluetooth is hard and costly enough to get more than a few packets as per last year's hak5 vid w/the dude who is trying to get a system setup for it* It doesn't have to be an encryption that is out now either. One could make their own encryption. I'm not saying it's that easy, but at the same time it's not that hard. If the military would use their own instructors/tech workers/etc. that are in the field instead of outsourcing as per teh gov. then it would *possibly* be different. And really, it's probably a system in that plane that is more like a 286 rather than a 386, cause you really don't need that much speed for anything that it does. I am *almost certain* that most of the collected data is organized @ the ground as per the laptop that goes with the controls, the plane just obfuscates the signal in some encryption and sends it to the ground. as long as the bus supports the speed there is no need for real number crunching on the plane, though that does create an overhead on the signal itself.
  9. well yah, but I mean that way we know where he is.. so teh clown mischef can ensue :)
  10. Hate to act like someone hiding info... but why don't we just text him? I have his number. I mean not like MASS text him, just ask if he is in x hospital, but if he doesn't want us to know, then don't worry about it?
  11. There are a lot of wifi cams out there that do not support encryption, or they only support lower levels of encryption. You have to spend the big bucks to get the better encryption, so it's most probably the latter. Also.. Beware of Trojans! (not the viruses or the condoms) Could be a honey pot... Well either that or it could be some perv that set one up in the women's dressing rooms. If that were the case ddos'ing it would be a good semaritan service.
  12. @Kerberos: Don't be depressed. That's job security!!!
  13. My honest opinion? The network admin should be more helpful for you being it a computer club. He must be really paranoid :P Course I guess I would be too.
  14. Yah, I would go for either the craigslist option or the salvation army. (btw, I saw that either the salvation army or goodwill will ONLY take flatpanels/lcd monitors now, so that should be a viable option) If your not broke as a joke, I would look around for a sceptre lcd. I bought mine on the waaaaaay cheap a year and a half ago (though back then it was $220 for this 20.1", but then for anything decent you were paying 320+) and it has not given me any probs. my spec: 2ms, 1680x1050. oh! would you look at this! gee how my hard earned $220 has went down. SCEPTRE X20WG-NagaII Black 20.1" 2ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 - Retail $129.99 btw, the bad reviews... most of them are retard reviews (don't like the base/base isnt sturdy.. etc etc. etc.) Base is fine as long as you are competent enough to put two legos together you will have no problems with it. There are a few legitimate ones that are bad, but that's to be expected with any electronic device. Oh yah, and the on board speakers? Unless you think the aspire one has a good speaker set, don't even plug them in
  15. damn.... Hope they find out what it is exactly. Dude, if I had any money right now (no I mean really. I don't have any atm.. damn commercialized christmas) I would totally send him something, given we find his location. If he is still in after Friday, I will. Here's an Idea.... Once we find the hospital, let's start searching for fax lines. Once we find one, let's collab. on making him a bad ass get well card, and we could pass it around digitally to sign it (though I suck at sig w/mouse). I'm sure reg. fonts would do. And then we could send it a couple of times to make sure they get it to him :) For the fax: Send cover letter in the idea of: Urgent information for room x, c/o hak5 crew (or maybe it would be better to just give a phone number?) to: Darren Kitchen. Either that or we could just send it to Snubs.
  16. Heya there Iron Geek! Thanks again for the stickers!!! (@ phreaknic) Hmm.. Never used AVISynth but I have definitely heard of it. I'll check it out (though I don't have any video worth doing anything with)
  17. Ya know that is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I read the post origionally, I just couldn't remember who it was so I knew there was no real use searching for it.
  18. yah, I was thinking that as well but then. I figured it wouldnt work anyways (ping and the tcp stack has been patched for this for years)
  19. Only thing about radius is the question of can you use airplay to get the radius server to take it. This really should be left to someone with proprietary stuffs. And besides, they want to find rogue access points and users? If you sniff discreetly your not being a 'rouge access point' but that can be masked as well. Just look at the monkey! one of darren's fav. things about it, is you can't tell it's on the network. It doesn't show up as a hop at all, and there is no addition to the layer 2 timer, which means it's virtually invisible. Tell ya this much. I'm glad I am not the guy on that job. Whoever it is, is going to have some VERY sleepless nights.
  20. yah, sounds like a horrible idea to me. Hell, I just read this and if I were to go after 'teh houze' I would look for a way to 'reflect' wifi signals and try to get it through a window, then using a serious cantenna, pick it up from the far side of the reflecting pond, and make sure it's hidden as something. bam, there you go. I don't see why this is even a thought. Why don't they just use an unspecified signal of some different type than ethernet thta get's fed into a proxy server behind a firewall.
  21. hey Vako, those 2950s are still good. Maybe not for the corporate world, but for tinkering and 10/100mbps switching @ home, it's golden (specially if your training for ccna)
  22. I kno one thing I am getting for chrizmoos! :D Yah, no one ever knows what the hell I want so they always ask.. They never get the first thing I tell them (a Ferrari) but hey, you can't win them all right? :P
  23. Can it be used to manipulate the existing window? As far as I knew there were no real 'themes' for chrome outside of changing the background of the existing window bar. Making an Ie7 cloning theme would be nice for me (so I could get better browser performance @ work!) What about an FTP manager applet?
  24. definitely bookmarked for usefulness. I will be sending mass emails with these probably soon :) *especially those that calls me constantly telling me they got a virus cause... they accidentally deleted all their gmail*
  25. yah, this is true. Just make sure it's over $1300 with a sticker that says it has a bunch of blah, and that will take care of it. I think I know what kinda person your boss is... lol.
