  1. ... holy shit it's Matt Lestock. Been a long time man. How's it goin? On the other (main thread note). I guess you could say it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't type of thing. Extra cost/thread use on that server for that one extra smoothwall vm, or extra cost for that extra computer. If you'r that worried about the security side of it, go grab the cheapest dual core atom server you can find and use it for the smoothwall. TBH it's most probably cheaper if you build it yourself, but if you want a prebuilt solution, just newegg search for it. I believe they are in the $300 to $400 price range, (no hdd/ram/front video or dvd/cd ports on the front). If you build it, you could probably kick it well @ around $300 flat for a low power, low memory machine. I mean how much do you really need/want smoothwall to do anyways? **edit** here's your Rackmount box for $279.99 + Free Shipping (shit I am really thinking about buying this one myself.) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16816101262 Spec: CPU Type Intel Atom 330 Dual-Core 1.6GHz processor FSB 533MHz Chipset North Bridge Intel 945GC South Bridge ICH7R Memory Supported: 2 x 240Pin Max Memory Supported 2GB Memory Type Supported Supports unbuffered, non-ECC DDR2 667*/533/400MHz memory DIMM Sizes: 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2GB * Perform up to System Bus speed at 533MHz Channel Supported Single / Dual Channel Storage : ATA 1x ATA 33/66/100 Serial ATA 4 x SATA 300 SATA RAID RAID 0/1/5/10 Graphics GPU/VPU GMA950 First LAN Realtek RTL8111C-GR Second LAN Realtek RTL8111C-GR Max. 2. Just wanted to add two notable mentions: BrainStorm-(1983) Researchers Lillian Reynolds (Natalie Wood) and Michael Brace (Christopher Walken) have developed a system of recording and playing back neural memory, and gets caught up with the government wanting to use it for stuff, and finds out that once a colleague of theirs has a heart attack and it was recorded, that if others view the playback they have heart attack as well, and they get a view of what it's like to die too. This movie is just straight up bad ass, and well ahead of it's time. At the same time, it's interesting to think that this technology is going to be possible in the near future. Brainscan - (1994) - Starring Edward Furlong - A lonely teenage horror-movie fan discovers a mysterious computer game that uses hypnosis to custom-tailor the game into the most terrifying experience imaginable. When he emerges from the hypnotic trance he is horrified to find evidence that the brutal murder depicted in the game actually happened -- and he's the killer. Had some pretty bad ass looking kit for it's day, and really.. I'd still love to have that room. (imdb.com)
  3. WAIT!!! A couple of shows ago, some random code was shown for a split sec. before cutting away to another scene... Wondering if it has anything to do with it..... CHECKING IT OUT NOW! Will be back after brief message!
  4. Hell, I dunno about any of you but my original idea was that it was a hype leak gone arhy. Maybe Apple just wanted someONE to find it. Someone who would post pix online, say it was cool, and then it breeze over, not an actual company's workers find a guy selling it that had any real credibility.

Well, IMHO it's not really the question of how much security you have but why? Sounds a bit like an ole' PITA and $$ to have that stuff for just some home connection. You do know, once info is out of that nifty firewall box you have, security is only as good as what your connected to supports. I feel I have a decent amount of security on mine. It's called the shut down button. Yes I have a built in firewall, firewall this, and firewall that. Security software, antivirus/malware/etc. etc. etc. but I don't feel there is much need for hard effort. If someone is going to want to compromise your data, they are going to want data that's worth more than just 1cent to the average joe. This would be credit cards and etc. And if someone is going to want to get that, then they might as well just redirect the traffic from a backbone router, or spoof a Frame Relay port. Just sayin'. My suggestion is you should check out the PIX emulators and/or get Juniper or JunOS. It's solid and does the job pretty well.
  6. Still looks like it's using flash to me. (right click on video -> "About Flash 10.x") I don't follow.

I hate to say it but I would not tout any network as being secure.. There is always a way.
  8. I got a good one.. My stepdad called Micro$oft for help activating windows XP.... A PIRATED COPY!!! Yeah.. I had a yell session with him.. oh and BTW, I don't know him now :X
  9. +1 to VaKo. on the Nexus One. However I got a sweet deal on this, so I am going to roll with it. As far as casual vs. hardcore, that's just a matter of preference really. You can do the same on the I-phone as you can the Android platform, just that with the Iphone, the first step is rooting it. I am going to try to wait it out for 2.1. Hell it's only a month away anyway. I think maybe it has a little bit more to do with the polish HTC puts in it's widgets and the point of this is the first real release update for HTC so they want to get it right before they send it out (yes I am being optimistic.. 1st time buyer of an HTC phone so giving them the 1 benefit of the doubt). Yes there are a lot of folks like us waiting for it to come, but there are tons more generic consumers, fluffin' around with the phone, and don't know how to really even use it for more than calls and playing music (and playing teeter.. that game is friggin' hard past level 30) that are just going to go eh? oh it updated? wow, didn't know it could do that.. And then they will be all happy and giggily to see animated backgrounds and that's about it... If it all comes to a crapshoot of HTC constantly spurting out lengthier update times I am just going to root it and take my 2.1 into my own hands (with the idea of having a complete backup of 1.5 so if anything ever happens) Hell, if it gets bricked I can find some interesting ways with some wire and a 9 volt to make it fry for the warranty guys :)
  10. I just got an HTC hero. IMHO Droid > Iphone, but mainly because you don't really HAVE to root it to do some of the more awesome stuff. You can even develop apps/debug and actually see it working right on the eclipse ide to test, and then you can upload it to the phone and voila! Your app is on your phone :). I really hope that plans like they have down here start migrating your way for your sake. Down here, my carrier has a deal where you get 1 Hero /get a 2nd one free, and then on the plans you can get the all unlimited (and yes that also means no cap. I have read ALL the fine print and even called customer service to verify) for $70/mo, 2nd line is $40, so it ends up being $60/person for ea. line. The only thing it does not come with is SMS, but honestly what ever good came from sms anyway?! (anyone who has ever fallen for the 'hey come look at this picture' line knows what I am talking about) This phone has been REAAALALALALALY awesome! But here are some points to consider: -You may not have the inter-connectivity with your other Apple hardware like you would with an I-Phone -There are some known bugs, but being at it's core a Linux system, android OS is always upgradable until the phone won't actually have specs to run it (whereas with Apple, they phase out hardware compared to OS updates) -There are not AS many apps, especially not as good games (so I have heard) but at the same time, the Android Market is growing very rapidly IMHO compared to Apple's Online Store, so very soon you may see the opposite happening, however, there are a good handfull of crap apps out on the Android market at this time. -Apple thoroughly reviews apps before they make it to their store, and rejects crapware, duplicateware, and junk, whereas as far as I have noticed any old shmoe that can write code can post to the Android Market. -Apple has say when who and how OS updates happen for the I-phone, for Android OS (to be supported/insured/etc) it's all up to your service carrier. If the carrier says... oh well, your phone can run it but were not going to give it to you, then your stuck unless you buy the next upgraded phone. Even if you want to get the newest Android update, but your carrier wont support it for your phone, you can root your phone, find the rom and upgrade. I am excited about Android 2.1 even though there are tons bitching about the broken promises etc. for the release date, which reminds me. Why do people get in an uproar when a support rep. tells them a false date for an OS release? Oh well.. Average consumers will be average consumers I guess... I hope this helped your decision one way or another. Both phones have very good promises with purchase, and you really can't go wrong either way. In Other News:Apple Claims Invention of Multi-Touch, Phone CPU Undervolting, Sues HTC to Stop Sales http://www.dailytech.com/Update+Apple+Clai...rticle17811.htm This is a month old article I know, but interesting... Just goes to show if you'r in doubt, sue I guess. I'm still waiting on my lawsuit for others breathing oxygen without paying royalties. Don't worry you guys are cool. heh. :P And then there is this: Taiwanese chipmaker Elan Microelectronics, and they are suing Apple over patent no. 5,825,352, filed in February 1996, and granted in October 1998. The patent calls for a "method and apparatus for detecting an operative coupling between one or more fingers or other appropriate objects and a touch pad includes processes for detection of multiple maxima with intermediate minima in appropriate sequences to emulate the operations of cursor control and button actuations in a pointing and control device". FYI, multitouch was actually invented back in the 80's: "In 1983, Bell Labs at Murray Hill published a comprehensive discussion of touch-screen based interfaces.[5] In 1984, Bell Labs engineered a touch screen that could change images with more than one hand. In 1985, the University of Toronto group including Bill Buxton developed a multi-touch tablet that used capacitance rather than bulky camera-based optical sensing systems." - source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch /
  11. I must also add that I am sure it's top dollar too, so therefore it's way out of most people's leagues. Also I have to go with Sparda. Probably the reason why they even came out with this card was to fill the gap between the last gen cards and then next gen. And make no mistake that ATI is gaining. I got mad love for Nvidia, however it's never been about the bling. It's always been about driver stability for myself, but I have been hearing that ATI has got a lot of things fixed in that department, and TBH it would be nice to put some cash in the hands of AMD to see if they could finally refill that underdog winner department the way they did with the + and the X2 days.. However I have seem to have ended up with a dilemma recently... You don't need very much horsepower to do any computing these days unless your doing something high res with a deadline (aka. high res photo imaging/video editing).. Hell I'm still rolling perfectly strong with my old AMD 5600X2 and Nvidia 8600GTX. The only thing I have upgraded was the hdd to a 1tb WD green, and that was only because my previous 320 went out on me, and I can still do 85% of the same tasks comfortably on my $450 laptop (close specs to desktop except for a not so good video card, but beats the hell out of intel gma any day). I have even thought about when it's time to kick my desktop, just going and getting a desktop replacement style laptop (but preferably not as big.. maybe a 16") because I am sick of looking at a mass of wires and a big ass bulky tower. I mean for a server yeah, it'd work great but I am ready to consolidate to one computer, and for a server I would just throw it in the spare bedroom out of sight and out of mind to Tunnel/RDP into it at will. I really didn't realize it at first but the laptop is becoming king of the hill fast regardless of what you want to call it (i.e. desktop replacement, laptop, notebook, netbook, etc.) In the past year alone I have went from fixing 85% desktops/15% laptops to around 70% laptops and 30% desktops because of how cheap laptops are and people finally realizing they don't have to pay for a $1200 desktop machine to go on the internet. I haven't built a desktop system since 07', but repeatedly help people pick out laptops. I personally think that Intel/Nvidia AND Amd/Ati need to finally sit down (albeit not ALL together of course, just with their respective affiliates) and finally put down some solid specs for the IEEE to finalize for modular laptop parts (ie. zif sockets/video card ports/etc) so we can finally really 'build' laptops and have a continuity of upgrading and a boost for the computer/components market. When was the last time you knew anyone who blew like $350+ on a new video card? Probably a small handful but think about the ratio compared to a couple of years ago. We have became a multi system society. You play games and media on PS3/Wii/Xbox360, you browse on your phone, you work on your desktop, and do multitudes of mixed things on your laptop. It's kinda weird, but I believe we are finally getting to the age of the laptop fully closing the envelope on the desktop and putting it to rest... Damn where did all this thought come from?!
  12. Oh!! You mean that EZ button.. heh.. Disabled since my last 4 firmware updates :P
  13. Aww shit... You mean I have been posting random crap for the last 2 years for nothing?! (.)_(.) Lol.. Hey btw, this is the first I have heard of this wireless hoohah from 7. Is it only compatible with certain routers and firmware? My routers a wrt-dust fart edition, so it wasn't easy to setup then, damn sure nothing ez about it now (well unless you count the random resetting of it from time to time):P
  14. Well I just hope everything is ok for you guys. Don't party too hard! never know when you may need that bottle afterward :P BTW, because I have no idea, is there a problem with looting a lot of times after a hurricane over there? It's not so bad over here where I am but in some places it get's pretty crazy afterward.
  15. I read somewhere if the i7 is too high really try for an i5 cause the price/performance factor is awesome, but i dunno.. In a laptop my personal opinion is unless your running it as a desktop replacement only then I would go for the i5. My AMD x2 (ql60) in my laptop kicks just fine with most things including virtual box, especially if your doing stuff like learning server08 or something (that's really what I bought it for. well that and learning M$ SQL). For a desktop unless your doing some hardcore video editing or desktop publishing, a phenom II x4 would suffice absolutely fine for the cheap. I haven't really done much with openbox before. Tried a few times, but considering I was trying to configure it from the ground up I really didn't get much further than a really crappy looking and feeling (but uber light weight) desktop. Maybe Dr0p will do a tutorial some time :P
  16. Well Arch+XFCE4 = FTW in my book, because xfce is so light on resources yet not very hard to configure so it's the best of both worlds! Unfotunately I kinda sold out... again... I went on an OSX look alike rampage and well.. You get the picture. Xfce4/aqua... but at least it's easily changed back.. also btw, power? nah.. i'm pushin' an Athlon X2 5600+ w/2gigs of memory. Even though I have everything enabled as far as pretty stuff, it's starting to really lagg when multiple windows are open or if I am using the gimp :P (but awn has never been nice with resources..) Oh and FYI!, that page title "Linux Commands for Beginning System Administrators"? I couldnt remember the damn command for 'top'. well. now I know :P
  17. Well folks.. After some really aggrivating stability issues that arose in PC-BSD, I canned it and went back with good ole' 7. But nothing special to see there. However! I have finally got a good working and pretty (IMHO) Arch setup working w/xfce4 :) so here's the photo of that. It's running in virtualbox with the full vbox extensions, compositing, translucent window effects, and using OSS for the sound system. Runs like a top, and to top it all off, it's only using 200mb of memory! I am going to be looking soon to port it to iso and then install it along side 7 (cause I am liking it that much :)
  18. I gotcha. I am the complete opposite :P Of course then again, since it's been..... 9 to 10 years since I toked out.. I'm sure my tolerance is even lower. *lol*
  19. OIC! I thought the op was talking about sniffing on the same network on ipv4 on the switch side :P Here's a question I have been thinking about.. is it possible to sniff @ all on ipv6, since it doesnt support broadcast? *i mean without taking over the switch or router? also is there switches that support ipv6 routing?*
  20. Well.. are you just using a hooka? Maybe that's the issue. Try getting some 1.5s and roll 2 reg. joints out of it, smoke one, and call me in the morning :P Even though you may get a waaay better hit off a bong, you can conserve and still get mighty toasty off a joint.
  21. why don't you just use wireshark with a filter?
  22. And how long have we all been hounding for Steam 4 linux?
  23. eh.. all you with your newfangled fast speeds :P I'm cappin' @ 6mbps, but that's the fastest AT&T has down here. Not bad though really. I don't quite get it after like 24 to 30mbps. I can even stream compressed HD so I'm happy with what I have :) (but I never said faster wasnt better either hehe)
  24. There is a specialty tobacco store down here that has hooka tasting parties/nights :P I should go sometime
  25. Here, how about everybody quit bitching that they have better websites/deals/etc, and lets just go with what the AP intended on. I don't care about all your other websites with special codes, cause this thread should be about posting them HERE. BTW +2 4 u Deags, I don't have any site promo codes, but I get the daily/weekly cnet and here is something I thought was a steal: two Dell Mini 10v netbooks for a total of $398 shipped. "Get two Dell Mini 10v netbooks for a total of $398 shipped. That's $199 apiece. (To get the deal, click the above link, then click the "On Sale" button in the system-configuration toolbar near the bottom. Add the second Mini 10v to your order.)" specs are: standard netbook (1gig/160gig/1.6ghz atom n280/3 cell batt/XpSp3) but it really is a nice little notebook, and your definitely saving there if you wanna get one for you and one for the misses, or your two sibling. Just as always.. I has no funds so i'm not gonna get it but hopefully it will benefit someone :)
