  1. I thought about what the heck is ACTUALLY in the Wi-Spy usb spectrum analyzer and figured I would search to see if there was a DIY version. Seems someone definitely had my same thought though quite a while before I did. Here's the documentation: http://www.wireless.org.au/~jhecker/specan/ Damn it.. YES I know I misspelled "Analyzer". Lol.. analizer. odd
  2. How to: Smoothwall ACLs using Squid.http://martybugs.net/smoothwall/squid.cgi And that was just a quick google. I understand that it wasn't just there, and I am not really yapping as we are always here to help as a community, but next time, just try to google for it first. And also if you don't know about ACLs, it stands for Access Control List. These are very versatile and allow (or disallow) many different protocols in many different configurations as you make them. I would research a wiki on it found HERE. However this is a kind of advanced concept, and on THAT note, if you need any help just hit us up.
  3. 1. newegg.com 2. specify wireless N w/gigabit ethernet 3. sort by price (lowest) 4. read reviews. this one seems to be popular: $69.99 TRENDnet TEW-639GR IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab, IEEE 802.11b/g, IEEE802.11n 2 Wireless Router Free antenna extender w/ purchase, limited offer (btw, this one only has one gigabit wan port/all lan ports are 100mbps) I know I will be buying one soon, but I want to get an integrated dsl/wireless router solution. Anyone have any recommendations for that?
  4. Hmm.. This is interesting.. Well either way, I got my laptop back today! Everything was fixed! They replaced my ac adapter (I still stand by the idea that there was nothing wrong with it, but I am not complaining about a free replacement either), battery and adapter port on the laptop, and everything is well :) Actually I think the key thing here is just completely bypassing the geek squad store completely and calling them over the phone with the issue. If they ask you to go to the store first before sending it in, go ahead and bring it to the store, but just make sure you call b.s. on anything that doesn't seem to jive from them, and then call back and get the geek squad phone tech to send you the box to ship your laptop to service. Whole point is, if there is something like a keyboard or other piece that you have to take apart the laptop for, they are not just going to give you the part, they want it for service to let their guys do it, so my stance is just be smart about sending it in. I know I will be if I ever have to deal with them again. Make no mistake I won't be buying a geek squad warranty again though.. I haven't made it 1/2 the way through what it was really worth, and this laptop is a real cheap crapper compared to most laptops and it has only given me this tiny bit of trouble. They just make them better than they used to for the most part I guess :P
  5. +1 to most of you. So there is definitely a question I would like to know, and that is why she CAN access something she is not supposed to? I am also very very sure that upper management will want to know that as well, regardless of what she has done.
  6. Not to worry about pr0n or anything else for that matter. Did a triple wipe, fresh reload back to the original O.S. Vista, no passwords, no surfing/cache or anything :) As far as worrying about the store, they said they couldn't do it in store, and it's getting shipped off for repairs. If it comes back screwed up, I'll just contact the shipper, find out if there was insurance on it (which usually with any corporate shipping account there is for the full amount of the item being shipped) and have it cash refunded. I am not too worried about anything. I would have VERY promptly fixed it myself had it not been for the warranty.. You know, just in case I screwed something up which would void the warranty (didnt look at the exact entrails on that). Hopefully I will have it shipped back soon, and then use it for my main computer and use my desktop as a vmware server (or that really cool setup Darren talked about in the last ep.)
  7. Ophcrack is ok... I just use konboot and then reset the password. Much quicker than cracking.. Kaspersky av boot disk for taking out those nasties. When people are cheap there is only one option for all around protection... MS security essentials UBCD4Win, UBCD4DOS, and BartPE disks.. for the cause. Almost anything that would stop the system from booting. Also great hdd utils. Android Wireless Analyzer for new/added APs and Wifi Routers Android Wireless tether (and wired... and bluetooth) For those folks with POTS.. Metasploit is nice and all I just really never delved into it too much. Yersinia for "bringing down the house" :D people aggrivating you watching youtube in the study/break room? np.. ddos the wireless switch @ layer 2. No more internet till someone resets And glad to see I am not the only one who still uses cain n abel :)
  8. @joeypesci - Hey man, I gotta tell ya, windows 7 has some odd issue with the esxi management program. That's the only reason why I haven't messed with it yet (we were going to in class, had a really sweet dual 4x xeon proc kit we built to use with it, but it took the entire network class budget for the semester, and hardly anything was compatible with it, and to top it all off, the only os we had installed on our systems was windows 7, so it ended up being a multipurpose server for wifi/routing/imaging/other stuff in class running server 08) Maybe VmWare came out with a newer version compatible with Windows 7? Watch your raid controllers and only go for compatibility I would definitely say...
  9. Well, it's not a virtual server yet, but I want to use it as one once I upgrade the memory a tad. E-Machines Celeron-D 356 3.33ghz/stock fan cooled (and xtremely quiet) Old 20gig 7200rpm drive stock 150gig(unhooked for now/lady had cancer that gave it to me. I just keep it just in case she wants anything out of it) 512mb ram Yeah, she's a whoppin' machine alright :P Actually it would run excellently for what I need it for once I upgrade the memory in it. Has 2 sata plugs, lots of slots too. I would like to make it a vmware esxi server but for now it's running an OS with some software I use all the time.
  10. Oh god don't tell me that Seshan! lol. I am already missing it. @VaKo- Yeah, it would be awesome to have the Dell Enterprise (or the IBM as well), but when I bought it, this was the cheapest I could get with a 2yr warranty short of a laptop from Walmart, and I would have ended up paying more for less in the long run there. I just wanted a warranty to make sure it was covered through college. Hell, if it were not for me having a warranty I would have fixed it myself, about a week ago.
  11. Well, hey sablefoxx, since you used to work for them, was this kinda common practice or something? Geek Squad is infamous for screwing people however they can (or at least that's their rep seemingly) but what is it really?... Is there some kind of repair budget/cap that they are not supposed to go over or if they fix so ever many things without sending off or going over budget they get a bonus for the month? Reason why I am asking is this guy wasn't just the run of the mill dumbass that seemed to get a job off a buddy he knew, but this guy completely tried to rook me. If I didn't know any better, I would say he either didn't give a shit, or was a con artist. If it was not for the detailed documentation I received once he finally did decided to help me within warranty, I wouldn't have trusted him with it. Luckily also it says exactly what the laptop looked like when I gave it to him "minor scratches across the surface". If any of you think about smirking you ought to know, it's the compaq cq series which features a mirror black finish that you could scratch just by looking at it funny. I have babied this thing like it was a solid brick of gold!
  12. I personally stay out of the politics and pretty much everything of war, because the folks that do know their facts (like VaKo in this case) cant do anything and the people who could make an impact only slander which ever side that they don't like and then it's all down hill from there. As far as oppression, mindless killings, and civil conflict in general I feel that this should have been calmed down by now however the certain interest groups that can benefit from these atrocities are the ones who keep it going. These people should read on the native American Indians and what they went through due to the French settlers. There are some sad reasons why they only own a very small percentage of land in the U.S. Most of their land was taken from them at the cost of thousands of Indians lives.. Basically what it came down to, was that the Indians wanted to trade land for what it was worth and the French settlers asked for miniscule amounts for the land, and when the Indians didn't think it was ok, they just took it.. "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" indeed...
  13. I would have to say +1 to gcninja. It could be under grounds of entrapment, however nobody really has to know that. Especially if your in an environment with xp or vista use, she would just think that it's a bug somewhere, and you need to get in, HOWEVER I would make sure you have someone standing by to take care of 'the rest' as soon as you get that password, because I am certain she will freak out and change it as soon as you get off the phone with her. Also, are you using outlook? If so, (and presuming she has not deleted the sent emails) you could just reset her pw, go into her computer, and check out her outlook after hours. @barry99705- They already have all the evidence needed to kick her ass out right now, however this is definitely something that x942's company needs to take to court with this woman. And in court, you gotta have everything proper or else it's a no go..
  14. So I went to Geek Squad in the closest Best Buy today to put my laptop in for service since the battery lost 1 hr's worth of time per charge, and the laptop charger no longer works. Sounds simple enough... Replace the charger and battery and be done with it! They can't replace the battery since you have to call a special number for that, however they can usually (I believe) replace the charger. I bring my laptop up, with ALL my warranty information, and papers. The guy tests the charger (which has an intermittent charging issue mind you) with a multimeter, and says it passes.. Then he plugs it into the laptop, wiggles it a bit (it's always had a bit of play from the day I bought it.. I think it was a design idea so it would be harder to break it from the mtb), shrugs his shoulders, says it's the port, but here's the thing.. He told me it was NOT covered under my 2 year "black tie standard" warranty, saying it's an incidental issue, and I could get it sent in NOT under warranty and they would call when they knew how much it would be to replace it. So then I told him about the battery.. "Oh well.. hey (some near co-worker)! how long do batteries usually last? around 14 to 18 months?! Oh yeah.. That's not covered under the warranty either" So I asked what the hell the warranty DID cover. He told me pretty much every f*ing thing EXCEPT the battery and the charge port. And strangely enough he also told me it covered lightning... Since when the hell has a NON Accidental warranty EVER covered lightning damage? I have never known one. It's usually pretty well worded in ALL warranties that it does not cover "Acts of god". So here's what I did. I went to the car, called Geek Squad Tech support, asked them what my warranty covered, gave all my info, then asked if it would cover a dead battery or charging port on the laptop... The answer was "Absolutely". So then I gave the guy on the phone the run down of what just happened. He told me this word for word "That guy is full of it" so I took him (well on the phone) back in with me and confronted the idiot at the desk, put the guy from the phone tech support on loudspeaker, and he also had his manager standing by to hear the rest of the conversation between me and the Geek Squad clerk.. After that everything was golden. Hell yes I am getting everything fixed, I have all the paperwork and etc. I am still in warranty till September. This turned out ok, however that really pisses me off because even though I know that there are people that try to get stuff replaced toward the end of their warranty just to do it, I was clearly in line with all regulations of said "Warranty". This dickhead tried to point blank punk me.. Just remember. Know your warranty.
  15. Thank you for all your help. @VaKo, well the only real experience I have in a god to honest IT job is that I was a phone tech support guy for Gateway Computers, but it was an outsource company (Service Zone, now Client Logic), and that was in 2001/2003. To top it all off I was fired from it. Don't get me wrong. Everyone was fired from that job. It was an extreme turnover rate environment (had to keep up 15% sales while fixing computers.. not an easy task). Honestly I was the only one of three still there when I started when I was canned for being the bottom 35% under the sales rate... So really, I am in the shitter on paper experience. The only thing I could really do to include it without bashing my credibility in the process... is lie. But if they found old company records of course it would come back to haunt me. I try my best not to bite the hand that feeds. I got my Monster.com on, and as soon as I start cleaning it up on this cover letter I am going old sleuth style on jobs high and low. Now if I am submitting straight to an I.T. supervisor then yeah, I can see a cover letter just getting glanced at best, but most larger companies around here make you go through HR, and of course they have no clue about what real traits is needed for a tech, so they look at the sociability factor of the cover letter I would speculate. Also I do need to work on my social skills, but I think that's a pretty easy fix for me :) Sounds kinda stupid but when I get in that basement tech rut, I just go out, get drunk, and do something stupid (not to look like an ass or get in trouble in any way mind you, just to make people laugh and have a good time). That usually get's me right on track. My only worry about the mom and pop stores around here though, is they have always been the same way. Open up over the summer, stay till winter, close for good in the spring. There's just not enough people around and demand for a mom and pop computer store to make it. However you make a good point about just going into somewhere and working your way up. I would stay where I am at, get into I.T. and go from there, but there doesn't seem to be anything getting open anytime soon. **on a side note I met the AS-400 programmer the other morning. She was the only one there when a switch went down going into our department. I really tripper her out with my knowledge, cause she knows nothing about networking.. which is actually kinda sad to think about, since AS-400 is pretty much a full scale networkable database OS.** --btw, she was pretty hot too! :P
  16. Ok, so I am a fresh college graduate being a dual major in computer programing and networking (more emphasized in networking). The job market is looking pretty interesting. Maybe not good, maybe not abundant, but I want to make a strong impact on every job I apply for. First let me say that on the resume, I feel I am golden. I have honed my resume to the best of my ability for what I have to offer, yet of course I have remade it about 7 times.. but the cover letter.. My issue is I cannot fathom how to sell myself. I am an IT guy. I think like an IT guy, but I have NEVER been a sales person. Of course the cover letter is selling yourself, which of course is my weakest link. And all the good googles and bings in the world don't seem to help me. I guess the main issue I am having is I can't stand the idea of "copy, paste". So I want to come up with an original cover letter. I know if I were searching resumes and cover letters and happened to see a line that looked very nicely thought out, searched it and found it to be a blatant copy/paste job, I would think the person is a fake and trash it. That's just me though. Maybe I am being too critical? I know there are a lot of good IT people here. Heck, love me or hate me I have been on this forum for two years now, so I know there are some great minds here. The question of all this is what is acceptable? I know about the faux pas like really bad formatting, excessive colors, lying, and of course grammatical errors (no I don't really use good grammer here) but that's pretty easy to take care of. I am talking about cockyness. What "Sells" you without being cocky? What about personal computer fixes? Should it be thrown out all together? I know you shouldn't say "I fixed my little sisters computer 5 times, and know how to reload windows, and fix computers for all my friends" but should it still be noted that I have had personal interest and self taught good troubleshooting and repair techniques for the past fifteen years? There do not seem to be a how to really for cover letters for IT/entry level network administration. What do you look for in a cover letter? What are some of the things NOT to do in an entry level cover letter? Any help is greatly appreciated.
  17. this is really cool but too much work. Check the Android Developers pages here: http://developer.android.com/index.html It's much MUCH easier to code in the sdk and with xml.
  18. Pi was in fact a pretty wild mindbender. After I watched I was all like, OK! I have GOT to make a C++ Pi proggie! So I did.. Wow I had no idea how long it took to get 1/4 the numbers that guy in the movie had. Now I see why Pi is such a magical type of thing. Also neat to see it counting down. I see why but it's just not something your used to seeing in a calculation.
  19. I'll be posting my VERY DETAILED AND COMPLETE how to on rooting most android phones and adding a rom (focused on the hero, and for most hero's not just for sprint heros.) here very soon. I'm runnin' BitterSweet v12 (2.1 rom) oooohhh yeahhh :) btw, yes I know there as like 10000000x tutorials out there but not a damn one of them are complete..
  20. I would like to add one more that I watched last night: --Law Abiding Citizen Epic in a technological POV in that NOWHERE in this movie is there anything that cannot be done in real life. The only thing that probably can't be done is the exact string of events in the movie, and IMHO, besides the pointless killing that happened (to the people that really didnt quite deserve it I would guess by my point of view) I have to say I REALLY like his style (like.. what would you do if that happened to your family?) :X
  21. Hey I have a recommendation for gamecube: Eternal Darkness. It's cheap, fun, interesting, and if you are into the RE series this will be right up your ally. For P.S.2 - Frequency and Amplitude are awesome games. If you want a really hard fun but cartoony game, I suggest Rayman (frickin' hard... I never beat the game before trading it in a looong time ago.) BTW, I am still looking for R.A.D. (robot alchemic drive) for PS2. If anyone has any info, holla at me!
  22. Yeah man definitely watch yourself with that! Also remember that being an android phone, every little extra widget you have on your screen and every little web 2.0 program on it in the background will suck away that data usage like it's no tomorrow. I would try to get a plan with it man. I happen to be on the only U.S. carrier to offer unlimited data usage (with no cap)
  23. http://twitter.com/sprint/status/13982006289 "Android 2.1 now available for Samsung Moment! Details and instructions here - http://bit.ly/bfOw9j. Hero users, you're up next! about 14 hours ago via CoTweet sprint" ZoMg would the wait finally be over? Will HTC finally deliver on the goods of updating the poor hero? Find out next time, on the same bat time, same bat channel!
  24. ***Supplimental Pre-Wet Bible*** http://android-beginners.googlegroups.com/...book.pdf?part=4 <-I highly recommend you read THIS FIRST! Because it does explain a hell of a lot that I had to unearth myself (still can't put the damn pdf file down :P) ***Setup/Starting Ground*** Android Developer SDK/Tutorial/Setup Eclipse GDE ***Tutorials*** Android Programming Tutorials http://developer.android.com/index.html http://androidforums.com/android-developers/ HAPPY PROGIN'! :) I am about to forgo my own venture into android development. Mainly I want to make a program that implements GPS, Depth and Wall finding, and RUNNING FROM ZOMBIES!!! Heh. Sounds pretty crzy but I would love to play it... If I ever make it. There is a game called Zombie Run! but it's top down, not 3d and it's just not that um... fun. ALSO* +1 to VaKo, Steve is in fact a cunt of mammoth proportions, and Java is not that bad at all. If you know C++, you know Java, and if you know xml, well then hell, you probably don't even really need a tutorial! :X
  25. Very good questions. 1. You don't even have to have a phone to 'develop' apps for it, since you can test it in the Android for Eclipse emulator, however, for a more solid testing ground you should have a phone to test it on. Use a friend's phone maybe? Even though the phone comes with 1.6, 2.1 IS on the way, just maybe quite a while longer to get here than it should be.... Also you have to remember that MOST Android phones on the market are still running 1.6 (I have a Hero so I fall in the same category) So if you wanna just develop for 1.6 now, and port to 2.1 later, that is still a viable yet profitable option. 2. There is no superiority for either phone. They are on the same plane period. One does a certain set of things better and vice versa, but the margin of what they do better is only hear say, and it's only for what you like. If you wanna I-phone, fine go get one, if you wanna ride with us on Android, then hop on :P Cheers in your endeavour. btw, if you need help with setup, links to tutorials and etc, holla @ me.
