    Email

honestly, be honest and act intelligent without saying that you know more than the sysadmin. start off like this: Hi, I am (real name here) a Nth grader in xyz school. While I may not know everything that you do, I would like to tell you of a few things that I have noticed along with some suggestions that I would be interested in sharing with you. I am also willing to assist if you would like a student aide, because while I understand a lot about these issues, I can and am willing to learn more. The first thing is a reason... here is one suggestion that I have heard can work for this.... Etc... again, sound very polite, intelligent and willingness to help. as a sysadmin I may or maynot accept the help offer, but if the email sounds well thought out and presented, I would really thank you and appreciate it. an example of a student who thought they knew more than me is this: in this example the student was just fine until he added the remark that he was extremely angry. He should have done some research and explained exactly what he was looking for with an example such as: "I am trying to use google to find colleges in new york, and when I click on link xyz.com I get an access denied. Can you help me get this unblocked?" on the other hand, this was more thought out and sounded a bit more respectful: another example that I have seen and plainly ignored until another teacher politely asked me about it was this: Rather than being rational about it, its full of caps and not very respectful. Basically I could come up with more, but simply think it through and re-read it before you send it off so that it sounds intelligent, repsectful and is actually helful to the situation. We don't always have time to take all problems presented seriously from students, however if presented right you may end up learning more (and teaching too) than you could have ever expected. 4. PIN: 1233 nope kno wot i'll write it out completely the first number multiplyed by 3 is equal to the the second number. the second number plus the first number is equal to the third number the third number devided by the first number equals the fourth number ok, so its 1341 ?
  5. I would suggest a Mac because in a home environment they work best, however Grandmas usually don't have a ton of money laying around. So I'd recommend a windows computer, loaded with MS defender, spybot search and destroy, spywareblaster, adaware (paid version), zone alarm and Symantec AV Corporate version (less stupid pop-ups). Then I'd actually suggest DSL (with a secured CoyoteLinux box or something similar) only because all of those pictures coming from grandchildren can be rather large and it'll mean less waiting. or..... I could just give her a Intel 386 with 4MB of RAM running Windows 3.1 with no internet access and tell her that its as good as it gets.
  6. This is going to be a great movie! Can't wait to see it :p -Manuel
  7. My recommendation is Remote Administrator from radmin.com It does cost, but its got a small network footprint and works great. Ive been using it for at least 5 years and am loving it. Down side is it's for windows only. However if you are looking for free multi-platform i'd have to suggest ultraVNC or tightVNC. For Mac OS, they have a VNC server built in, you just have to enable it in the sharing preferences. -Manuel

  10. no it's not, ask darren to check the ips of both of us drop it already. besides, why would *anyone* want to be associated with those older nicks that were nothing but trouble. Hint hint.
  11. its fucking awsome. I love the new design.
  12. You do (or not if you don't want to publicly) have to admit that they did something right though. They (Bill Gates) sold his product(s) very well and as a result they lead the world in OSen and spreadsheet and document programs REGARDLESS of quality or not.
  13. LOL. It should've been titled better, but this was really a poem driveingnow wrote and posted as per conversation in IRC.
  14. It will be a beer company that will sponsor hak.5 Since they are trying to become more ready for rebroadcasting, it'll probably be sponsored by MicroShaft and Evolans. ;) Edit: and of course more beer.
  15. Yeah well I think the creator of this thread is simply trying to up his post count. :)
  16. not sure what to suggest for the harddrive, but usually Dell isn't really all that bad. But another company I started to trust a lot is Daktech. 7-year warranty on Desktops and 3 year warrantly on laptops. http://www.Daktech.com
  17. The only real problem with the thought is that a good amount of people registered here are minors in most countries and therefore do not have credit cards or other direct means to dontate on a monthly basis.
  18. wonder when it'll be available to actually watch -- sounds interesting :)
  19. No, I don't accept those cheap pieces of plastic. I do however accept Monoply money, since it is worth more. :)
  20. I accept gold, platinum, silver and other valuable metals, but I do not accept the plastic that is printed on. ;)
  21. Yeah good thread idea, moonlit. To all of the new people here and on IRC, Welcome to the Hak5 community.
  22. All that our laws and regulations say (that I know of) is that we have to keep files associated with public records. This basically means that student's personal work is not necessarily a matter of public records. Teacher/staff files are however considered to some extent public because if someone wanted to challenge the validity of a test or something of the like, it could be considered public record. I'm not sure of other schools, but we don't have to keep individual files/student works for any period of time past the current year. The only data that is legally necessary to backup are files on students, such as grades, discipline records, etc, which are already handled though teacher gradebooks and other files kept in the offices. Even some data is not necessary to keep for extremely long periods of time. Some schools may store the files for their students from year to year as a courtesy, rather than a necessity. So in my opinion regardless of them stating it or not, if you did not back it up or specifically ask the IT department, its not the IT department's problem. Of course I am not a lawyer, and I don't know school law that well, but I'd have to say you're out of luck. A school network admin, Manuel
