Win7

We've been using Vista in our WIS dept for some time now, and have a few people using it in the general population. I've been using Win7 since the beta came out on my work desktop, and coupled with Server 2008 R2 I can't wait to deploy it. Death to XP.

We're going to have to test the release version and see, but i know we had too many headaches with Vista. Mostly the cost of upgrading a lot of older systems that are still in use.

We'll have to do something since eventually they are going to fully stop supporting XP.

TBH the kit we've been replacing was P4 Optiplex 170L's , Win7 runs okish on these but add in office 2007 and it gets ropey fast. But the newer Optiplex 755's are pretty cheap (they all come with Vista business, which we don't use because we have MS Connect), and come on, you can't keep using old machines forever. People will say "switch to linux" but even so the ROI/TCO on a windows infra has to be taken into consideration when you are thinking of migrating to another platform. If your a small outfit then its easier but still, a lot of time, effort and cost at a bad time compared to spending some cash on some some new desktops and a couple of servers + licenses.

I will wait a while longer, for now is there anything for your business that you need windows 7 in order to do,

for me with XP everything I do works, 99% of my games are not dx 10

i have no need to upgrade because the upgrade will just make my currently apps slower

I dual boot windows xp and vista and theres a clear performance difference,

windows 7 isn't much better than windows vista in terms of application performance

while it booted faster then vista by a little, it was still no where near the speed of xp, my 3d mark 06 score also went down from around 9600 in windows xp to around 8700-8800 in windows vista and windows 7 (for windows 7 i cant take the score seriously because there no agp hotfix drivers for it and based on experience with xp and using non hotfix drivers, some games would crash for no reason or the screen would randomly go into standby and the VPU recover will restart the drivers)

I am using a AGP ati radeon 3850 (If you have a agp system and are looking for a new card and you see a 3850, run away as fast as possible, it is a terrible card, it runs at 110+C so overclocking wont be much fun, the heatsink on it is smaller than the heatsink on my old geforce 4, it looks big but under the plastic shield, it is just a tiny chipset like heatsink with more fins and thinner fins, stupid people at sapphire forgot that chips do get hot when electricity runs through them)

I wish i had a portal gun so i can set up a few portals over at sapphire and slap each of them with the heatsink as they walk by

but when the hardware catches up I will upgrade

hard drives need to get faster, because the UI is bloated with random visuals even on classic, theres more to load, while the cpu and memory and other hardware has improved, the speed of hard drives have only improved slightly compared to how much other hardware have improved. so vista and windows 7 feels sluggish because things are not as instant as with xp

Hardly anyone working in professional IT really cares about things like 3D Mark scores and the like. Most of the hardware is sold to spec by Dell, HP and the like, upgrading is limited to things like adding memory, the odd NIC or a larger hard drive. Beyond that, we just keep pushing the old crappy kit down the food chain until it becomes a mission to support and its replaced with something more modern. For home users who try and eek as much out of a bit of kit as they can then this stuff is more important. But in your case, AGP is way out of data, PCI-E has been standard for years now. This is probally why you find XP faster, the kit your using is designed for XP and not Vista.

Try W7 on a cheapo Dell tower with a Q6600, 4GB of PC5200, a basic quadro card and a SATAII HD and I think you will be surprised.

As for business features, W7 leaves Vista in the dust, let along XP. Professional IT people have very different needs when it comes to IT and believe me, the W7/Server 2008 R2 combo has a lot of us salivating.

No, well, sorta...,

Probably moving the labs to SunRay's (from generic XP boxes). Windows could be run in a VM. Almost every professor is using a Mac or Sun/Linux workstation.

There is currently just one Vista machine in the whole dept I think and it's been serviced in our office at least 5 times since october.

I am not in the IT dept. at this moment, but I have to ask what the hell you are doing upgrading a bunch of pc's just because of 7. Yeah I said it. It's about TCO, and that also means that that group of dell optiplex's you have sitting around will be more than perfect for the workplace for a couple more years to come. Windows XP IS good to ditch if your thinking about issues with administration, but then again, unfortunately that is not the same case when it comes to the tco because even if you wanted to do this, then what is the boss going to say? XP is stable enough, unless you have a good handful of rare cases, and your time doenst ammount on the TCO because most probably your on salary.

... sry about that rant. and yah I do like win7. I got the beta @ home and it works good..

I mean dont get me wrong, yes it's great for the couple of people in marketing for their posters/designs/etc, or the boss or something of that nature, but considering how much time it will take to thoroughly go through all the client software to check for stability in 7 and the point of upgrading or replacing all the pc's that im sure fit everyone's NEEDS at the moment *by needs i mean what they need to be doing/running at work*. if your client programs are light and they run fine now, why upgrade? that's all i'm saying *course i dont know what the situation is for you if you have a bunch of old clunkers around the company that are constantly lagging or going out, then that's one thing, but if they are perfectly fine computers that do their purpose well, then why change out?

I'm nowhere near being in the IT section of anything, but I have a feeling a lot of companies will be upgrading to Win7 since XP is officially off the support list. Plus, Win7 doesn't actually run that bad on older hardware as long as you have a decent GPU or turn Aero off.

We've been testing Windows 7, and it's worked well in our VMs.We also installed it on a couple of P4 boxes, and it does just fine. I should note though, these aren't machines that have a lot of production software on them, just office and a few other random apps. On that note, we won't roll out W7 for at least six months after release, and it will be incremental as new machines come in, and old ones needs re-imaged. Personally, I'll probably keep it on a VM on my machine to test, but I'm loving server 08 as my desktop OS of choice.

yah, I would love to have it deployed where I work (that is if they upgraded all the ram in the machines past 512mb!)

and yah, it's an up to date dell machine.

funny thing is I have it setup to autorun when I log in:

3 instances of a program setup in multiples of ways for easy working(sry guys gotta plead the 5th on what program.. i work in a casino)

a phone management program

outlook running in the taskbar w/icon notification

& usually 1 or 2 instances of firefox.

slow as hell to boot, but once it's up it's good 2 go! :P

hhm well i don’t get it anymore.

Are they trying to imitate Linux now or OSX ????¿¿¿¿¿¿¿

still testing!!!

Till now they basically did deleted all the bullshit nobody was waiting for in vista.

Thereby the speed increased tremendously.

Also booting is now 10 time faster that vista.

Still I recommend bootvis to be sure.

So what we got here is a Windows XP pro service pack3 with some small amount of vista features for the Xbox live users.

Going testing cya latterss.

PS For thos who like to see first befor there download is ready or something like that.

Here a fun website with some videos/Demos.

Win7 Demo's

Its nothing like XP, its basiclly Vista R2, same codebase as Vista, its version 6.1 of windows when vista was version 6.0, has all the vista features and more. They just fixed the resource heavy issues and debugged the code properly. As for imtating Linux or OSX, they are doing what every good developer should do, namely nicking the good bits from competetors products.
