  1. Currently I am working as desk side support/ system admin for a state health department. I am moving to work in Quality Assurance for a software vendor in the next two weeks (a bit of a change). @5ive: Thank you for mentioning onforce, I had had no idea such a site existed until I read this thread. If you wouldn't mind, I would like to ask you questions about it, and about I.T. contracting in general.
  2. I thought I might weigh in on this subject, I as well am going through a job hunt. I think that certs are definitely advantageous in today's economy. I've been told by several employers (those I've had interviews with, and those I haven't) that certs such as the CCNA and the MCSE will guarantee you an interview (given this is for sys/network admin positions). I think it is fair to note, I do not reside in a large metropolitan area which could skew things from my perspective. Drilling down to the point, it seems that having either a degree or cert will give you a better shot at an interview, having a combination will net you better pay. YMMV. Edit: Rereading this, it seems all I have done it restated common sense/previous posts, so my experiences reinforce those statements.
  3. We've been testing Windows 7, and it's worked well in our VMs.We also installed it on a couple of P4 boxes, and it does just fine. I should note though, these aren't machines that have a lot of production software on them, just office and a few other random apps. On that note, we won't roll out W7 for at least six months after release, and it will be incremental as new machines come in, and old ones needs re-imaged. Personally, I'll probably keep it on a VM on my machine to test, but I'm loving server 08 as my desktop OS of choice.
  4. The guide that VaKo provided works like a charm. I used to boot XP and Vista home premium on my laptop. The guide is simple and works extremely well. You shouldn't need the cd to boot into xp.
  5. (Woot, first post) Ahem.....Hey there Lyran. I know what you mean, I've been there. In fact, I'm just breaking out of one of these doldrums. I find that I can rarely learn for the sake of learning, I have to be able to apply. I set up projects for myself, goals to accomplish, and get cracking away. Ask yourself what you would like to accomplish. If a goal = success Move onto next goal Else Try again See what I did there? Sorry, I'm not a programmer, LOL. If there is anyone close who also likes this sort of thing, get involved, it's always funner when you some one to bounce ideas off of, and can come up with more projects to attempt. Hope that helps!
