  1. IRSSI and Screen OpenSSH OpenVPN Everything I need on a server
  2. you can probably turn it into a serial terminal
  3. http://openbts.sourceforge.net/ Creating your own GSM network and sending calls over a Asterisk PBX. If a phone see's your base station first it can connect to/through it, you could then record it using the built in features in Asterisk, I'm sure. Once a phone is connected to your base station, you could do just about anything you want including redirecting it to whom ever you feel like.
  4. Its always worth having Windows installed as you never know when you might want to intercept radio signals outside of 2.4 and 5GHz (you can get Atheros based cards to go out of band a bit) and don't want to drop over a grand on a USRP (although if you have the money get one, I love mine). Radio software on Linux sucks balls outside anything related to the USRP, the only thing passable is some pager stuff, although I have seen passwords and usernames sent over the pager network which is kind of funny. You also have some okay satellite related tools, which mainly seem to pick up Africans looking at porn on satellite internet connection, if you are doing it from the UK. You also have loads of CAD tools and electronics simulation tools like what National Instruments put out. Hacking is more than running other peoples applications on a wired/wireless 2.4/5GHz network.
  5. If you are mainly about games, Xbox is the only real pick as the online experience is great and lacking on a lot of PS3 games, even the ones that do it okay, still kind of suck. The other issue is Sony are going to bring charging in and it looks like its going to be more expensive than a 12 month Gold account with Microsoft. So more money for a poor attempt at online gaming does not fly with me. If you are more about media the PS3 wins, everything streams better on it from a PC, XVID and such. You also have a Blu-Ray player and a built in browser.
  6. Well I travel a lot for work but its not the same thing, its basically me flying in, going to a meeting, going to a hotel and then flying somewhere else, or home. As a Englishman, I quite like visiting the more remote non touristy places as there is one thing you can be sure of, you are never more than 50 miles from another Englishman, we are everywhere. You at least feel like you are somewhere different from home when you are in the more remote places in America. New York and San Fransisco are two places I've been too a lot, but both feel like I've not left the UK. I think if you live in an area, you tend to not see all the good things about, as you get use to it. If you came to London I'm sure I would get bored with pretty much everything they lay on for visitors. I've done, parts of Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, China, Japan, Russia, Cuba, Bolivia, Chili, Mexico, France, Germany, Holland, Poland, Canada, Swaziland, Italy, Romania, Spain, Africa, Israel, Egypt and the UAE but the last few years I've been heading to the US as it costs about the same as going to other parts of Europe, the people are fairly friendly/nice, lots to do and the country side is stunning. (most of that was in a gap years, one before uni, one after) I'm out in Charlotte and San Fransisco in February and Houston in March as I want to go see Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the last time I was in Houston it was a lot of fun.
  7. Drive Route 66 See a bit more of the World. That's about it
  8. I've looked over your post and I'll hit some key points. You do not compile on the device, it would be very slow. What you need to learn to do is cross compile, check out Scratchbox. Scratchbox is fairly easy to install, get running and use on your host machine, just install it on a Debian VM if you're a Windows user. The issue with cross compiling is you often need to tweak the code to get it to run correctly on the target device. Some times things need a rewrite. I don't think the device is high capacity compatible, but I've never tried. I've just built apps for friends with the Z1 and Z2 over the years. 2GB is big enough for most things. you could want to do, don't get me wrong, you will be hard pushed getting GPSdrive or any mapping software working with a good collection of maps if you do a serial mod.
  9. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4030/421238...ea593fbfb_o.jpg Some of those books are new, some new DVD's too. Some of those are photography books I've got nearly everything Norwegian photographer Petter Hegre has done, as I like his work. I also got a Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f1.8G lens for my small dslr.
  10. When the world comes to an end or the oil and coal runs out, you will find me sat in my house in the woods, with running water, more than enough electricity to run a small town, supplies to last twenty years and a stock pile of weapons to rival a small dictatorship.
  11. You could build a wood gasifier and run that into a genrator as a back up. is an example of one
  12. Its not so much "once" but if it comes out. I've seen too many things like that that come to nothing or have a batch run of 20 developer units at most.
  13. Ubiquiti RouterStation with a SR71-A card will give you a/b/g/n and its running an Atheros AR9160 with everything natively supporting Linux. You also have the option to add more cards in the future if you want.
  14. I don't see why people are shocked its been like this for 20 years, the thing is now the cost of seeing whats about is about £50, with the price of a PCI card like the SkyStar 2, a used dish and a copy of whatever software you prefer. The Linux based satellite receivers like the Dreambox have some nice tools for them and have done for years. One system needs to integrate with older and upcoming systems, adding encryption is just another level of complexity. It also adds additional overheads. The military runs on proven and tested hardware and software, its not running the latest i5, as a friend once said, "Skynet runs on EMP-hardened 386DX CPUs".
  15. Yeah it seems ideal for that. I've a few ham friends that have used them as serial terminals, the first one they put out you needed shockingly good soldering skills to do a serial mod and add a memory card, the Z2 is nice and easy to work with, plus the color screen was a nice addition.
  16. I don't see the issue with Nokia support, I've never needed it. The issue with the Zaurus is the only option I've seen getting one is importing it from Japan, which is not a good one. Even the people I know in the US say there hard to find. I can walk into a shop and get a n810 for under £150 now. The ease of access to the n810 means that you have a much larger developer community. With the n900 coming out the dev community is getting bigger and bigger every day, the Zaurus is an oddity at best anywhere besides Japan. I don't see the issue, with the 6GB built in. The n810 has 2GB free and you can just stick an 8GB card in it to make that up to 10 or go with an even bigger card.

  18. Why you are wrong http://forums.bsodtv.org/Nokia-N80-t546.html N810 is hands down the best handhald at the moment as I can get everything I run on a normal laptop working. I can even use USB video capture cards as a way of bringing video in from my video scanners, if I want to I could even use a usb to pcmcia adapter if needed. I don't know enough about the n900 to say its going to be better than the n810 in some ways but it looks like it will be worth picking up in a year or twos time when the price drops.

  20. EnCase Law/Government products are much more feature rich and are all round better products.
  21. The idea behind the show was as an open source style show. Where lots of people submit stuff. I do understand that people have life's and don't have the time to record and edit stuff, but if you people that are downloading the show want it to keep going, all you have to do is submit content and maybe if you have some free money, donate some to pay for the servers. I would help out more but I work two jobs and also have personal projects and studies.
  22. I say you just have a few guys grab him of the street and beat the truth out of him. Even if he did nothing wrong it will work as a deterrent to the rest of the work force.
  23. There is lots of money about for people willing to work. Building a skill set is the only real way of making good money and not having to do a lot of hours. Dumpster diving is a good idea for making a bit of cash, you will be shocked what you will find, fix it up and sell it on ebay. That or join the armed forces, there are always jobs and depending on what kind of scores you get on your entrance exam, you can find a lot of training opportunities right of the bat that will give you a very solid future when you come out.
