I assume that's Firefox 1.0? Firefox 1.5 and 2 would probably be a bit too much ;) I think we have a problem with 1.5 but I don't remember what. I tried 2.0 on a machine last week, it worked pretty well.

You all think every companies use Cisco, have new workstations every year, etc.. I exaggerate, I know In my case, I have to manage 300 computers with two other guys. There are a lot of pentium III with windows NT 4.0 and some celeron 1,3GHz with Windows 2000. Because we are a in a small hospital with a small budget, we use these computers as much as we can. I'm still amazed when I see these 7 years old machines working well for the need of the users. All this to say IE7 is not an alternative for us. We keep IE5.5 for all our windows machines. or some users who have some troubles with IE5.5 and a website, we install him Firefox or mozilla which use less ressources and stay fast even on a pentium III.

You don't have to change it right away. You can add firefox in a new windows image you will use for computers you add or you change. IE can't be removed and at least the user will have the choice. Something sure. In a big LAN of thousands machines, it will take a long time before firefox will be avalaible to everybody.

No way. Even users at work are agreed mozilla/firefox has a better performance than IE. Yesterday, a guy even asked me if I could install firefox for him in his computer. I'd say your IT manager didn't really try mozilla/firefox or other GPL browsers. In my opinion, the best browser is links. I even succeded to make a poll in a forum with it :mrgreen:

I haven't used a fedora base distribution for a long time but I think you should have a graphical user interface where you can simply select the package you want to install. Check this out or try using a rpm package of ndiswrapper to install it.

My first Unix O/S was Solaris. It was the first time I was in front of a term. A collegue gave me few commands...especially the "man" command to RTFM :D During few months, it was a pain in the ass, especially when you can't really test everyhing you want as you only have production machines.

ndiswrapper is not so hard to use. If I remember well, yo need to get a *.INF file which is in your windows driver directory. #ndiswrapper -i [driver.inf] #modprobe -a ndiswrapper Your wifi card should work. To be sure, make a #iwconfig wlan0 After that, you need to wonfigure your wireless connection which is another story.

It's not RAID 0, it's a JBOD Array. Whatever it is, you should try using a linux livecd like knoppix, systemrescuecd, to help you recover the data. There are many useful tools which can help you.

Hum....I'm not sure TOR would be able to make you stealth with your office network. I've read a bit of the TOR documentation and what I've understood is you get stealth in the WAN. For example, you go to a website, this website will see a proxy IP address and not the IP address of the company. For me, in your LAN office, the data will still show your IP address until it goes on the router. forgive me if I'm wrong :oops: Anyway, as it was said before, you could easily be caught. It's actually depends of your network admin, and LAN equipment. For example, with CISCO switchs, from an IP address or a MAC address, you can find on which switch and which port a machine is plugged into. A network probe plugged into the main switch could also alert the network admin about an unusual traffic.

If I tried linux, it was for mplayer. With windows, I had to install several codecs, use several players. All divx didn't work well. With mplayer, I was able to watch all the movies without a problem. It took some time to get insterested with other things than watching videos and I had to keep one machine on windows because of a usb modem unable to work on linux (Let's say my knowledge wasn't sufficient to make it work). I had to try gentoo to really fall in love with this O/S. After two months, I finally divorced with windows and bought a router/modem. :twisted: .

/me bows I've nothing against *nix, but i'm just tired of people acting like its 100% bullet proof. I think we're all agreed to say there is no O/S which is 100% bullet proof. Every O/S will always have at least a few bugs. The hardware is also a kind of weakest link. But still, I saw some SUN servers which were running when I started a job and were still running when my contract was completed 3 years later with no one shutdown. In this situation, we're close of the 100%.. :)

Arfff...Shame on me..I didn't built my computer yet from scratch..I wait to get a more stable situation so for instance, I'm a laptop user which is really easier for me as I moved a lot these last years.

I work in a hospital and we're quite safe against this kind of hack. We desactivate USB ports on our client machines.. Unfortunately, the last machines we recieve are full USB (keyboard and mouse too) :? .
