  1. I'm partial to Keramik Emerald.
  2. Confirmed running on: - nVidia cards as slow as the MX 440 .. often even slower - Intel Integrated 8xx and higher - Vanilla older ATI Radeon cards (think around the 9200 area) Cards confirmed that ATI is still an evil slut: - Any Mobility FireGL - Any card released in the last 6 months ... probably up to a year - Any old ATI cards whatsoever (AGP 1/2/4x)
  3. Can we quit the window manager BS please? The correct answer to "Which window manager should I use?" is "Try them and pick whatever you damn well like best."
  4. Actually yes, which is suprising b/c the neighborhood I'm in isn't exactly a very high traffic area.
  5. Here (duh) LinuxQuestions.org Help out fellow Linux users. Gentoo Forums Help out fellow Linux users. NCAAbbs College Sports forums; I helped co-found in 2002... now the webmaster and an admin... #1 place for: Atlantic Sun, Big East, C-USA, MAC, and WAC conferences Cincinnati, Rice, UAB, ETSU, Memphis, Kent State, Northern Illinois, and Toledo universities.
  6. Told you that as a redhead she could cause cardiac arrest. I wasn't kidding. Google is your friend.
  7. Left: Hotness Right: Ishmail Muhammad's monster dunk against UNC in '04 in the Thriller Dome. - OHHH Muhammad does it again! --- He will bring them out of the seats once a night! He's still laughin' about that one. - The Tech kids saying "We are not worthy!" --- Wow. That's that 42" vertical.. and he used it all.
  8. Workstation: Gentoo 2.6.16-beyond-r3; Patiently awaiting 2.6.17-beyond-r(?) Laptop: Gentoo 2.6.16-suspend2-r8 Production Server: Gentoo 2.6.14-hardened-r8 Guinea Pig: Gentoo 2.6.16-gentoo-r7; Patiently awaiting S.L.E.D. 10 We don't need no stinkin' Windows or Apples.
  9. Like so: /dev/hda1 /dev/hdb1 = /dev/md0, RAID 1 --- Mount Point: / /dev/hda2 /dev/hdb2 = /dev/md1, RAID 0 --- Mount Point: /mnt/storage You can't mix and match RAID on the same set of drives, correct?
  10. Just look around on Newegg. A good rule to go buy is look at hardware that has alot of reviews. Somebody posts whether or not motherboard x works in Linux and how well all the time. Beware the SFF motherboard, the current lineup on Newegg is an anti-Linux mine field. Socket 939 Opteron ftw. AFAIK, you cannot mix and match RAID like you're suggesting here. Budget RAIDs: RAID 1 (mirrored) --- fast read, redudancy, no speed increase on write RAID 0 (striped, aka I-Dont-Need-No-Stinkin-Backup!) --- fast read, fast write, no redundancy Burn money burn! RAID 10 (striped mirrors, or a RAID 1 of two RAID 0s) --- fast read, fast write, redundancy The rest of the RAIDS are impratical or even more costly than these, and I will leave it to you if you are so inclined, but the only other RAID that's even somewhat practical is RAID 5. nVidia for the win. Browse Newegg for the case. I strongly recommend AGAINST water cooling. If you carefully design your case, and get a big honkin' Zalman CNPS 100% copper series heatsink, you'll be good. With water cooling you're looking at the potential for leaks... kinks that kill waterflow... as well as having to go WAY out of your way to prevent algae growth which would clog the waterblocks and pump... causing icky overheating. Try to maintain positive air pressure in your case (more air being blown in than sucked out) ... this makes the air stir more in your case, lessens dust build up, and makes it run slightly cooler. I would go configure a beast on Newegg w/ that budget, but I'm too lazy and don't know your taste in cases. You could build a beastly Linux box for $1,000 .. much less 2. Footnotes: - Burn in hell all things ATI. Do not support ATI by buying any product that contains hardware from them if this is a Linux box. - Newegg ftw

  12. cd /windows/C look for a folder named "DRIVERS" in here. It will contain the win driver files you seek. You'll be looking for a .inf file under /DRIVERS/WIRELESS or /DRIVERS/NET or similar location. cd DRIVERS/path/to/inf/file cp *.inf / cp *.sys / cd / ndiswrapper -l (erase any existing entries) ndiswrapper -e entry1 ndiswrapper -e entry2 ndiswrapper -i /filename.inf ndiswrapper -m ndiswrapper -hotplug modprobe ndiswrapper Make sure we see positive results.... do we show a registered wifi device? iwconfig Quick n dirty: Open wifi: iwconfig wlan0 essid (YourNetworkName) mode managed WEP: iwconfig wlan0 essid (YourNetworkName) mode managed key (hexKey) dhcpcd wlan0 if successful; you can now surf the intarweb. You can also let YaST do the "quick in dirty" things for you, but YaST will not "just see" your wireless device. You will have to add a new entry, and put "ndiswrapper" in as the module. WPA is another ballgame, one I haven't fooled with yet with ndis. So you can Google that up, or change your router from WPA back to WEP. Your choice of distro is right -- stick to it.
  13. I have a Thinkpad T21. Mobile PIII 800 Mhz - 256 MB SDRAM - DVD-Rom - 20 GB HD. It doesn't have a trackpad. It has the infamous "little red nub". I love it. I never have to leave home row to move the mouse or left click or right click. Really very nice and efficient. And like every T-series Thinkpad... it's super thin, super light, and built to last. Linux works like a dream, and is very fast despite the older hardware.
  14. Errr... don't you mean nintyfi... nintyeig... twothou... xp? :D Sparda++
  15. I honestly think Vista will be the biggest disaster since Windows ME.

  17. Actually, rumor is that Adobe is indeed making products for Linux. Flash 9 Linux beta is due out this year, and Adobe has joined Project Portland, teaming with: *deep breath* Intel Corp., IBM, Hewlett-Packard Co., Linspire Inc., Mandriva SA, Novell Inc., RealNetworks Inc., Red Hat Inc., Trolltech, Xandros Inc., Xorg Foundation, KDE, Gnome ... in an effort to widely standardize the Linux desktop. Adobe has no reason to join that effort unless they are at least deeply interested in developing applications for Linux in a cost effective "one works for all" method.

  19. I get asked almost daily to help clean up Windows disasters. I refuse to do it for free or even advise them for free. I do help anybody using Linux for free though. If you're really interested in why Linux is so much more secure than Windows, then read "The Cathedral and the Bizarre" by Eric S. Raymond
  20. Oh.... and as usual...... Winners don't do warez. 8)
  21. Read the license agreement. Is the license transferrable? If so and they pursue you, claim your friend sold you the software and you're exercising your fair use rights to use used software. This however requires your friend completely erase the program. Glad I don't put up with BS like that in Linux. Ever read the Windows EULA?
  22. That machine is robust enough to run full blown desktop oriented distros. If you're so inclined to do that, here's a guide I recently wrote up: http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/ncaa/phpbb/v...pic.php?t=19271 If you want to get the most out of that machine in terms of performance etc.... I'd recommend Gentoo. Kororra is a LiveCD that lets you install a 100% Gentoo compatible system quickly and much easier than a straight manual Gentoo install. If you want the middle ground (not as fast but faster than the big desktop distros; not as hard as Gentoo but harder than the big desktop distros) then there is: - Puppy Linux - Damn Small Linux
  23. There is NOTHING* you can't do with Linux. * Does not include problems associatied with the following hardware: - 3D Acceleration on newer ATI and mobile ATI gfx cards - Winmodems - Monitor mode (kismet) with proprietary wifi
