  1. It's not so much code but instead knowing how to mess around with XP itself and edit the os' resource files. Here's a g4... *original techtv comes to mind, chokes back tears* ...tutorial that gives an idea as to how someone can create their own login screen for XP. Understanding how this works will in turn, allow you to figure out how to modify other aspects of XP including your start menu, about, welcome screen, etc. Good luck, have fun. edit: I'm an idiot, here's the link. http://www.g4tv.com/screensavers/features/...gin_Screen.html
  2. I havn't heard anything about alcohol 120 being illegal. And if so, how? Many of its functions are available in other burning suites as well so that would mean those are illegal as well. True, bittorrent it and find a keygen or crack elsewhere. I would pay for it if I had the funds to do so but on a college student budget, beer money has a higher priority level than paying for seldomly-used software.
  3. Ugh, my high school had VB4 for use in our computer programming class (and this was fall of 2002 mind you, cheap bastards wouldn't even buy VB.NET or 6, let alone VB5).
  4. Very true, my friend never really took the time to learn about erasing one's tracks and was dumb enough to log onto the wireless network (using his OWN name) and started poking around. He was the dumb one here and I'm suprised the chief admin didn't give him shit for being so stupid. But, I made sure he knew how foolish he was once he told me about the incident. Oh well, live and learn. I would dive into this from a secure location (like how Sparda suggested) and poke around the final destination of the user's requests. The junk in between there and the ap is practically useless. I just did a similar test from the lounge of my hall using my unregistered laptop running knoppix std, and stumbled upon a shit ton of random switches, routers, and hubs that spanned across the campus. Interestingly enough (and stupid on my schools part); I noticed that half of the teachers' classroom computers can be easily accessed from the dorms and remote accessed just as easily. I'm debating whether or not to share this with the admins. Funny part is, I remember my high school's network being more secure. Back on track, if you can figure out what software that end server is running, then you can easily find everything you ever wanted to know about how it works from just about anywhere. Hell, the school's tech site may have it posted. Mine's got their main servers (web mail, blackboard) with their corresponding os' posted for eveyone to see. No hacking required
  5. My school has much the same set up for accessing the wireless connection. They've got is set up for DNS redirect but for fear of getting into trouble I have yet to play around with those (a friend of mine is now on disciplinary probation for port scanning the blackboard servers trying to find holes). I'm still suprised how observant they were to notice that, figured they would have better things to do with their time. All I know is that if your school uses blackboard, your name and password for that server will most likely be the same for accessing the wireless connection. As for finding any hard information for how the infrastructure is set up, I would hunt around google for dns redirecting and see if anyone has published any information regarding how it works. Good luck
  6. That looks awesome, I love the start side-bar. Great work!
  7. So you have written the code for the front end? If so, I would love to take a look at it. I havn't played with VB since high school and I just 'picked up' a copy of 6.0. If you have written it and wouldn't mind me looking at it (I promise not to just take it and run if that's any consolation), my e-mail is armadaskier23@yahoo.com. I was considering just running a striped down version of xp pro with one of those pre-made media player front ends that can be picked up anywhere on the web but making my own sounds like a fun project. Here's a kind of tutorial/suggestion for what someone would need for building a carpc, I found it useful as it told of a few more problems that would have to be sorted out (start up times, shut-down/hibernation power usage, etc). http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1858835,00.asp Thanks to everyone for you time!
  8. I can only imagine how much of a pain and an annoyance that must be if you had a cat or dog.
  9. DLSS - thank you so much for your help. I will be sure to look into your suggestions. And in terms of powering the unit, I was either going to pick up an inverter as the unit only requires about 100w or get one of those DC-DC power suppliers (can't remember the name of the company). And for the head, a touch screen. I've seen quite a few for around 150 on ebay, ikesound.com, and other places around the web. Again, thanks everyone for your input.
  10. You're right in that regard and I have considered what you mentioned as to what kind of hard drive I should use for this project as well as how I'm going to power the unit. As for the os, I did manage to find knoppmyth mentioned elsewhere and they had agreed that is was good for easy media useage. However that is all, nothing close to people who are using it for mobile media applications as well as what they thought of it nor any problems they've had. I'll keep looking around, thank you so much Sparda for your time and input.

    Car PC

Ok, here's the run down of what I want to do: I have a pc sitting in my basement back home collecting dust and I want to use it as a car media center pc. Only problem is that the pc's processor is old (approximently 500mhz celeron with 256 mb of ram if I remember correctly) so a version of xp pro corporate probably wouldn't run efficiently on it without much tweaking. What I'm thinking of is using a distro of linux for the OS but I don't know what one would run well on these limitations and have the necessary codecs (or capable of obtaining) to play wma, mp3, ogg, divx, avi and the basic others. I've tried googling this for quite a while but with no luck. I was thinking Ubuntu because it's so easy to use and update but then again I'm not expert. If any of you guys and gals have any suggestions/comments/anything that could help and/or words of the wise if you've done such a project before, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you all in advance for your time.
  12. For some reason, Dawn of the Dead played in my head the second I saw this. Probably because you guys look evil. Awesome picture, maybe VaKo can emo this somehow? That would be one hell of a feat.
  13. Awesome, now all I need is 20 bucks. Hopefully within a few weeks I'll have a new summer job.
  14. Maybe you could get ask a ninja to partake in a little evil server battle?
  15. Those look like standard rca cables
  16. I do enjoy using a G5 from time to time (I like macs, they are quite useful for certain things) but I did laugh my ass off at this video because I remember working with the old imacs and they tended to crash a lot, causing great anger. Oh well, the new macs are fantastic. Wish I had the money for a macbook pro.
  17. Very true. That's what I love about the American government. Take for instance college student demonstrations. These are often portrayed as 'radical' and 'misdirected' and therefore whenever one gets broken up by the government and reported of by the news, the students are looked upon as anarchists and terrorists when in reality, they were doing the same thing the founders of America did almost 250 years ago. Minus the guns. This can be seen all around the world in china, korea, etc. But for them, the governments are simply squashing the demonstrators (tiananmen square anyone?) and no pregress is made. I like your ideas VaKo, but the human race has just come so far. In today’s world, the haves would control such governments with iron fists and we might as well be living in North Korea, China, etc. Power, greed, money and everything along those lines still run the lives of the majority of humans in the world. The ones who are the most educated and/or have the most money will be the ones taking over the masses. Because of the global network we now live in, computer geeks and hackers like us would become top property for running the world (Where's my "geek shall inherent the earth" t-shirt?) . Well, My own opinion is that changing to a "utopian" society would be worst for the masses than democracy already has been. What I believe should occur is what a Swiss economist believed back in 1800. Simone De Sismondi believed in the profit motive, he believed in capitalism and freedom of businesses to run as they wanted....but with restrictions. I don't want to spell out everything he researched and believed but he's defiantly an interesting person to read about since he wrote his work during the industrial revolution and most of his work still applies to today.
  18. Very true. Hit the nail on the head with that one.
  19. Oh god, will this shit ever end? Yes, in accordance with VaKo, we do require a revolution to reform this bullshit. Remember all those days spend in history class learning about the Revolutionary war? Well, that was started because a bunch of pissed of people were fed up with he way things were being run. Now, what's so different about this situation today? We have a president who's illiterate and cannot speak coherent English, businesses controlling the government in interest of their own profits and helpless people getting screwed in the process. (Just go to digg.com and type in riaa to see the shit they try to pull on people, especially college students). The American government was formed in the interest in the people it serves and protects; now why hasn’t anything changed? When the majority of people disapprove of the Iraq war, the actions of the mpaa and riaa and even the people in which run the government itself? I don’t know how you guys feel but I’m sick of this shit.
  20. I have to agree with metatron, Pamela Anderson does have the most experience out of all of them.
  21. I dream in color but as for pain, only one dream in particular comes to mind. But, it wasn't the pain of being stabbed or shot but that of a broken heart.
  22. Once I was running from the police (don't know why) on my motorcycle down an expressway going about 160 mph (about 260 kph). This kept up for a while but my damn alarm clock went off before I could either crash or actually get away. Quick question for everyone: Have any of you experienced a dream where you felt as though you had control over what was occuring? I tend to have have this 'control' over my dreams, this particular dream for example and I was curious if this sort of thing was popular.
