I'm looking to turn my old box into a video/audio server for use over a home network. I was wondering if any of you guys and gals had any good ideas/suggestions for a OS that would be appropriate for this simple need in any price range. All of my computers boot win xp at the moment but I have used Linux a lot before so running something along those lines isn't out of the question. Also, I'm trying to steer clear of just running a ftp program on the box because after much trial and error trying many of those, all I got was a headache. Thanks

Damn a free, working computer. Nice. I'm waiting for summer as there is always one or two idiots that sell a old 1ghz comp for dirt cheap and they usually have a decient hdd in them during the garage sale season. Maybe even a few gems like old ass keyboards and apple II's. Next year when I move out of the dorms into my apartment, I'm tossing win server 2003 or maybe a unix os, whatever will work best for a basic media storage on that box for ftp to the tivo im going to buy/build.

The dorm set-up. Not much space in here but it works. Sorry for the poor quality photos, my digital camera is back home so I had to make due with my phone. Can't see it too well but that's Family Guy playing on the Samsung 19" Ha, gotta love the duct-tape moddifications to the case. The desktop I built about 5 years ago. AMD 1.4 GHz (forgot what series, far too lazy to check) with 256 mb ram and the cheapest mobo, sound card, video card, and case money can buy! I threw in three 250 gb drives once I got my laptop as I only use box for bittorrenting, ftp and storage for whatever I don't want on my laptop. The laptop is a HP zv6000, AMD 64 3200+ Venice series with 512mb ram. Nothing too special here, I just drag it from class to class. Both comps run XP pro corporate although I ocassionally use knoppix std or ubuntu live in the HP to screw with other student's wireless access points that they're are not supposed to have. One thing that sucks about being a college student: all the money that could be dumped into building a new box simply no longer exists. Oh well, beer is a very important study that must be taken seriously in order to succeed at this game of higher education.

They didn't have any at the Duty Free nor The Beer Store. Trust me, I would have picked some up. I used to work at a wine cellar/fine liqour/beers of the world store and we would get a case or two ocassionally of the Red and whatever other weird Canadian brews that you can't find in the US. But for as broke as I was, I had no problem paying 17 bucks Canadian for a split case of Coors and Molson and 15 for two half-gallons of smirnoff red. Needless to say, the exchange rate kicks ass. Oh, and I've come to known what crossing the bridge into heaven looks like. Here's the first liqour store we see: I'm on the far right btw.

Very true, they are increadily expensive to maintain. Oh well, thats the price one pays for a beautiful car such as that.

Beautiful M3 zivilyn, those are great cars. Too bad you did sell it, I don't believe I could ever part with a fine piece of German craftsmanship and ingenuity.

And as for the cat-hunter debate, Boo-boo has beaten the crap out of a few dogs before. One being the neighbor’s Doberman who got loose once last summer... I've never heard a dog cry that loud before. Just goes to show that they are capable of hurting things much larger than themselves.

Tell that to our uni halls admin, back when Kazaa was something special they tried to block it. Net result: we routed it threw port 80 and charged people money/beer/food/"supplys" to set it up for them. Haha, sounds like me this past fall semester when my fellow freshman started up their shinny new Dells for the first time. In one month alone, I made over 200 bucks worth in beer cleaning computers of spam and ad programs, installing anti-virus applications that didn’t expire after three months, removing viruses, and running registry cleaners and hdd defragers. I even took the time to write up a very basic how to for each “client†so that he/she would be able to defrag their hdd or run ad-aware without having to call me every month or so for help. If they were willing to pay a little more (usually another beer or two) and had the slightest capability to learn, I'd teach them how to use bittorrent and dump their old p2p client. In the end, I probably saved upwards of 30 Dells from their owners that semester alone because they didn’t have a clue on how to take care of them nor that it’s not a good idea to click, save, and run those damn AIM virus files that spread around campuses faster than syphilis.

Enjoying Canada and their wonderful 19 year old drinking age. My friends and I went to Canada for spring break this year because we were far too cheap to fly somewhere warm. Spending a week hitting up Windsor's night life was a great alternative. Pre-drinking in the hotel: A must if you're on a budget, bars overcharge for watered down drinks.
