  1. HIPPA and PCI compliance is one reason to protect there own back end. Also securities rules. I work for a company and I know I get so many shares of an initial public offering. Some one sets up an account and puts money in it and tells me what to do when the company goes public. Another example I work in a doctors office I use a computer to check patient records. If a patient record gets sent someplace where it shouldnt be there could be a problem. This is why this is a private network using encrypted email such as cisco strong arm. This is also why there systems are setup to block certain ports domain names and sites. I will not go into pci compliance for business merchant "bank accounts".
  2. Dont put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your skills enough so you have something to fall back on.
  3. What is your experience with fax over a cable company phone setup. I know voice over ip does not work good for fax. I was wondering if the results were similar for cable. Also is there any thoughts on products that require an analouge line such as EDI. Lots or software uses a modem to transfer data between two systems. Health insurance, merchants, ordering systems. These all use analogue phone lines and modems.
  4. I had a goofy project to take pictures of a department store and make a drawing of it. They also wanted me to walk around and take video. I was trying to determine the best place to put a kiosk. The drone would save lots of time and effort. I could of used it to get a picture of the layout as it was a bit strange. Lots of stores are setup in a loop where you have to walk all the way around the loop. You cant walk accross you have to go around. They also wanted to know about the demographics and some buisinesses nearby. The craft beer bar I go to the local brewing company. I did give some technical insight on what they would have to move and where they could place there kiosk. The ceilings were open so they could get data and electrical if needed. The point is I could of done this in 5 minutes with a drone instead of an hour and a half. They paid the ticket on time even.
  5. If you had to create a diagram of the aisles of a store. this could be a good tool.
  6. Any one try to reset an ap using this method.
  7. For some of the companies I work for want me to have Liability ins. I am an independent contractor. What are your thoughts and experiences with this. Are any companies better than others?
  8. This what I am thinking about. Setting up a softphone "sip" Voip. Voice over ip and sip was covered on one of the shows I hope. Time to get serious about getting certifications. Going after my ccent1 an A+ again. My A+ cert is a dinosaur. Look at cloud computing cert. And other stuff busy holiday week. No slacking. Sucks...
  9. I am looking to upgrade a video card in a ubuntu pc. Is it feasible to get a pciE card with dual Hdmi. What is in your machine.
  10. Understanding networking and tcp/ip. Look for a free online books about cisco. They are out there. Learning what is information is in a packet. Lots of fun can be had if you have wireshark. More about cisco or routing for that matter lots of routing protocols require authentication. A computer can mimic a router and send fake updates. On you tube there is stuff, wifi stuff, arp spoof, dns spoof, and more. The idea is to become a better IT person. Learning to block an IP address or port, being able to determine if you have a lecher on your wifi. Troubleshoot problems. Learning about linux and windows helps too. Lots of live cd distro's to play with. Even play with trix box or free switch asterix" voip distro's". Put an fxo port on a router "regular phone port" voip stuff. To play around with in your lab. Take an old computer put something on it linux or whatever and get going.
  11. A 1U rack would of made things easier but they used brackets to mount it to a piece of fire proof board in some places. Actually this job was not that bad. I know you guys think I am nuts you are right.
  12. I had each floor has its own idf and switch "patch panel on each floor" the person before did not label any thing. There were 124 switch ports on the mdf access ports in the ceiling on every floor. As cooper said Cable crimpers punch down tools "ptouch labeiler". Some thing that saved my butt a telco lineman cable probe. Plug it in touch the line when it chirps you found your wire or pair.
  13. I am going to say its a good idea to label network cables ports and devices. Hell when I played music on the pa we would say direct box out1 or condenser mic 1, even a special input for a magnetic acoustic guitar pickup. we used masking or duct tape for this. What ever we had that was cheap. Okay before we drift to far away go into a network room with a giant patch panel with no labels. Even label the name and ip address on your printers. If you ever set a WIFI network up for someone put the name of the network on a label on the bottom. The key would be nice too. The other thing is write down the mac addresses of your ap's printers and other devices. When you have to find a device on a switch if you have a mac address it helps you locate the device on a switch port. Invest in a good cable toner that helps a lot believe me. Plug the toner into the mystery cable touch the suspect cables and listen for beeps. Most of them will also test cable termination too. P.S If I could ship a case of beer I would to the show.
  14. Side business makes my stomach turn. When you find clients that find you decent work stick with them. My stomach turns when I see the pc support contracts pc users get. It is like bad health insurance. Again you hit the nail on the head good man.
  15. I hope re writing the post helps and I know talking about arp spoof or dns spoof in a public forum is just wrong. There were other problems with the laptop I can only imagine. I will accept no more work orders from this company. P.S when does NFL football season start. Fill the fridge with cigar city, sam adams, and yuengling.
  16. Okay something about computer people getting abused by customers. Then having the the company you contract for screw you. I had a customers laptop to fix. No sound from the speakers inside. Headphones jack issue. I tried to convince the customer to get a usb Sound bar or external speaker. She wanted it to work like it does before. I call the company i contract for they said. Open the laptop up and find out what's wrong. Most of the screws are missing underneath. If another problem comes up with the customer or laptop it goes back to me. Most of the time these items are soldered to the board. This is the same company that wanted me to use my o/s cd to fix a pc. The receivable thing sorry forgot i am dealing with computer people not business people. I was hinting about what to do if a custome or business screws you. The arp spoof and drifted thing was using master Google and YouTube to have fun in my lab. There are lots of good copy and paste things online bad. ya don't learn anything . hope this helps.
  17. Lots of general computer and networking ideas are a good start. Learning about electronics is helpful. All operating systems the ins and outs of windows and Linux and anything else you can get your hands on. Networking protocols addresses. These are just building blocks to hacking.
  18. Ok this is a hardware related question the answer is after extensive search of master google, youtube, dell , and HP sites. There is a sense pin in the jack that determines if there is headphones plugged in or not. Replacing the audio i/o Board might help, but for some people it does and some people it does not. The bottom of the customers laptop had half of the screws missing anyway. I backed off after opening a can of worms. I suggested to use a set of speakers or external sound card and speakers. She said I want my laptop to work the way it is supposed to. I was ready to say let me pull the sound board for your dell inspiron n5010 out of my butt. This is why I stay away from things like this and move more towards commercial customers. Not regular home users. Commercial business customers seem to understand what is going on and don't abuse pc people. It is to the point when someone has an Internet problem I plug my laptop in verify the equipment is working get the ip address ping something. Plug there PC back in restart the modem show them they can get online don't let them say let me test it to see if I can get to Morganstanley. done
  19. Windoze 7 crap top has anyone got an idt sound device to work with ubuntu out of the box.
  20. Wow what a computer question. JD, JB, CM, Redrum. Oh yeah this does not count but its cool. I used to sell beer made in Tampa FL. Drink it too, the cider rocks. There are some wines that are very good that have cool names. Third Wife, The whip, The Spur, Revolver, and the Stash.
  21. I looked at a laptop today it was an Inspiron n5010, IDT sound chip. Headphones work no sound through the laptop speakers. I reinstalled the drivers even tried the sigmatel codec/ Of course windows 7. Any ideas or thoughts.
  22. To boot from a live cd ubuntu etc. What I did on two dell laptops that worked is when turning on the laptop press f12 when the boot menu comes up select cd/dvd. Quite often I will not boot on its own to ubuntu or other live os's. Have not tried the usb stick yet. I will keep you posted.
  23. I need to do more research on this. Oem cd keys are locked into the uefi bios. I am going see if we can solve this a 25 digit key is locked into the uefi bios. Through digital river the windows 7 .iso's can be down loaded but you need a key. There is a utility for retail version of windows 8. Just put the key in it will get the bits for you. The best thing for me to do is to put a question on the dell toshiba hp acer and asus forums to see what others have done. I will try to give a play by play.
  24. What is a fast legal efficent way to reinstall win 8.1 "oem" on an acer laptop. I turned a consulting gig down because the person did not have the operating system software media. This was on an acer laptop that had problems at boot. Then I said doh computers don't come with the OS software anymore. There is a utility from ms it only works with the retail version. The laptop was locking up at boot. Meaning I think the file that tells it where to find the boot files is broken I think. Could be a ram problem. What have you done to deal with the issue of not having the OEM windows 7 or 8 cd. Must put the cd or os on a Flash drive. Next I have a dell laptop I am going to poke around on youtube and google to see how to turn off UEFI. To try and run a live os from a flash drive system rescue cd ubuntu etc. I will let you know what I come up with.
