  1. I reccently replaced a Compaq ML530 with a small DL130 or something rack unit I miss my ML530 it was such a work horse.
  2. I need some help. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64, and the default windows speaker configuration doesn't seem to have as many options as Windows XP. I have an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard and have Realtek AC'97 Audio drivers installed. Currently I am using my monitor speakers which are plugged into the "Main" audio output on the back on the motherboard. I have recently purchased a second monitor and have connected the speakers on this to the "Rear" audio output on the motherboard (In theory I could connect to this to the "Side" output) Now what I am trying to find a way to do is someone get Windows to replicate the sound that is coming out on the "Main" onto the "Rear" so that rather than having Front and Rear audio I just have Front but on both monitors, this would effectively give me more volume? I have had a look on Google but I can't find anything, perhaps I am using the wrong search terms. I have had a couple of thoughts though;- 1. It would be nice to treat the left hand monitor as purely the left channel and right as just right, this would be quite advanced and I image I will end up with both channels on both monitors as normal. 2. If no one can suggest an application that can configure this for me, I guess I will have to simply purchase a splitter and split the "Main" output and plug both monitors into this. 3. I don't want to purchase additional speakers (not because I'm being cheap, but I don't have the desk space for them)

    Ping Command

Turn your firewall off... :D or those more security minded of you, allow ICMP :)
  4. MSWord will produce some pretty funky HTML for you, have fun debugging that. I build an awesome looking website in publisher once (talking 10+ years ago) It didn't upload so well :P
  5. Here is one method 1. http://www.darknet.org.uk/2007/04/login-se...ird-php-script/ However I'd stick with the simple classic stuff 2. http://www.netlobo.com/preventing_mysql_injection.html @stingwray: took the leg work out of it, as it was something I was intrested in myself. http://www.amazon.com/php-architects-Guide...y/dp/0973862106 While on the subject of books, anyone seen this? http://nostarch.com/mg_databases.htm

    Minesweeper

Anyone got that link to hand of the Minesweeper movie? (The one with the army guys doing the sweeping?) Not seen it in awhile, was kinda funny :)
  7. Netbooks can be had for £200, I would sell this on eBay for a few £££ then just save...
  8. Quite a vauge HDD question. I gathered you wanted an external HDD to transfer files to/from class? Vako is correct with the 15K SAS in a Raid 0
  9. You can do it, but you're going to be spending mega bucks, I would hazard a guess of circa $1k just to network 2 pc's in some sort of cross over configuration Can't you upgrade to Cat6 (investing in a Giga-backbone) BTW: Fibreoptic breaks really easily... I ran 6 cores over a distance of 50 - 100m's (actually I let the end user do it as they where shirty) the cores where in a really thick armour casing, the managed to twist and bend all 6 cores (the cable alone cost £500) So they had to buy another roll, which I ran the distance... only to have some money on their site run over the cable in a forklift... luckily it didn't penetrate all the way through the casing ;)
  10. Darren, this looks intresting, however I get a 404 on the .jpg
  11. If you like the way PHP works try Python.
  12. From what I remember, SSL certificates (In an Outlook environment, which I think you are talking about) do not encrypt the email at all? They merely provide authenticity of the sender. I could be wrong. EDIT: HUMMMMM I think I am talking about something else as I just for a option in Outlook to encrypt email :P
  13. I bet computer guys get the smallest guns :(
  14. I'd pretty much echo what VaKo said, I did Software Engineer but went and worked for an IT Consultancy. Found out a whole lot more about computing and networking working for them for a year than I had in some 20+ years that I'd been fiddling. They also gave me exposure to coding database systems... you learn a lot from having an end user who knows nothing about your software.
  15. Well, from experience pretty much any idiot can go to University here in the UK, my computer degree was a 4 year course with a year working in industry. The first year of my course was pretty much a complete waste of time, it may have been helpful to someone, but I was of the mindset if you don’t know what you want to be doing in computing by now then you’ve left it a little late. The first few lectures where appalling, having someone explain to me what a mouse was and what it did etc was a complete waste of time, the year progressed slowly however they did cover a whole host of different topic (none in any real depth) but I guess it gave people a little knowledge about Programming, Database Admin, System Architecture, Networking and Graphic Design. As you can see it was very vanilla and not what I was expecting. The second year you started to “specialize” in your given field, however the difference between me (doing a Software Engineer degree) and that of someone doing Network Security was only one or two modules... six 1 hour lessons a week! The third year I was sent out to work in the real world, and I learnt more this year than I did in my first, second and fourth year put together, I’ll probably never be able to reboot a live production server without notice ever again without reprimand! The forth year was pretty much all software engineering, I found it boring and nothing was ever done in great depth, it was all Object Orientated and wasn’t very well structured. Some elements of it where nice, e.g. building Java beans and running them cross platform, however we did 2 hours of Coco? And that was it! I appreciate everyone’s University experiences are going to be different, as we all learn differently and even the course material is going to vary. It’s difficult to tell you to go and learn a development language; I went to three open days at three different Universities, the first predicted the “long overdue death of Java” and all their modules made use of C++, one was a real mix of more mathematical languages and then there was the University I went to, which was heavily Java based with OO as a primary focus, a few months of VB.net, PHP, ASP.net but nothing of real value was taught during these few months, and those of us who had a background / interest in these language excelled while others struggled to get the help they needed during the weekly 1 hour tutorial time. Computer Forensics is an area I am interested in and am considering going back to University to do a part time degree. I don't know how many job opportunities there are working in this field (Law enforcement is a given) however it’s something I feel I would like to do and also benefit from. “Another string to my bow” as my current boss says.
  16. SyncToy worked pretty well, before I moved to a Domain :)

    BlackBerry

Hello, I've just setup a BES environment for the Company and have been issued with a BlackBerry 9000 myself; previously I have used HTC style devices with Windows Mobile so this BlackBerry OS is all new to me. Just wondering if there is anything "cool" you can do with a BlackBerry? I’ve tethered it already which is nice, are there any applications that are super handy and useful? I’ve had a little Google myself but most of the stuff I’m looking for is available only on Symbian or Windows Mobile. Does anyone know how to setup a profile for use in the car? E.g. Auto answer all incoming calls and also activate loud speak, I can find nothing on either of these features, which is annoying as it looks like something RIM have overlooked.
  20. I used ebay alot for small / minor purchases. Bought and sold a few laptops on there before, seen so many scams. As long as you're a savy Internet user you shouldn't have any problems, the time old saying "If it's too good to be true" holds plenty of water.
  21. This thread makes me angry Then I giggle and think happy thoughts. Go plug your "claymore" into the DC see what happens...
  22. Had an ASUS F3 Series laptop given to me by work running Vista on 1GB Then I installed Vista X64 at home on a rig with 4GB and the difference was HUGE! Reccently replaced my ASUS work laptop with a Precision running Vista with 4GB (3.5GB)
