  3. Ok, I'm just going to agree ;) not sure what the last two message said all I know is that it can't be done
  4. Not wanting to sound like a complete idiot... but what is the difference between using a battery and using 3 power supplies?
  5. Maximum USB is 5V ? It's a loooooooooooong time since I've done Electronics (or Physics) can you combine 3 Ports/Cables to provide 15V ?
  6. After reading this thread and going away for a few days here are my thoughts, 1. Time to invest in a NAS or a Samba server. 2. I tried XP Home and Pro networking once, and then thought better of it. 3. Invest in a home domain :D
  7. Sounds like Linux I'm fucked Prehaps this tutorial will help http://www.cyberdogtech.com/firewalls/tuto....php?page=inter it made sense to me with my limited Linux Knowledge :P
  8. What is the box running? If it was a Windows based box you could setup different firewalls on both connections, or you could use something like ISA Server. I've not used Smooth Wall yet but can't you do similar stuff with that and patch the conection through?
  9. Never seen a PoUSB Enclosure for a full size drive. I don't even think you could modify something as I'm not sure USB will provide enough juice to spin the thing up. I would advise against buying a cheap enclosure, I've had two or three now and they just don't seem to last... :/
  10. Well you won't be "wasting" the other disk; you'll be building some redundancy into your PC. You’re thinking about it all wrong... Your working on some data, walk away to get a coffee, come back and your disk has died, the only way to recover from that scenario would to be your last backup – not forgetting, reinstall OS, APP’s and Data – yawn (I would reapply a recent image) However with a Mirror you would either need the raid controller to fail (Ouch!) or both disks (Ouch!) Try having a look at something like Microsoft Sync Toy, otherwise you’ll need to setup NTBackup as a scheduled task that runs every hour or so. The new version of Norton Ghost is nice, and I think it would probably do the job you’re talking about; it also takes about 13 minutes to image a 40GB drive
  11. Download HDD Regenerator http://www.dposoft.net/ By far the best Sector repair tool I've found =] ($60)
  12. Firstly, I'd upgrade my network security. Run Baseline on my servers, desktop to make sure they are ok. Make sure your using the strongest encryption avaliable. Then I'd would sit there and watch traffic, are you noticing a down turn in bandwidth when he is out and about? Personally I'd go out and talk to him, if he has hacked your network - ask why? Maybe he just want's to check his mail. Running out there and laying the smack down on him won't solve anything, I'd come back the following day and own your network, probally own your house while you where at work, do you have a nice car? Would it look nicer with 4 slashed tyres and some nice scratches down the side? Got a Dog? Planning on burying it soon? Seriosuly there are some warpped people out there, the last thing you want to do is cause trouble for yourself, why don't people fucking talk anymore? Sigh the world is going down hill at a rapid rate...
  13. I learnt HTML many many years ago simply using Notepad - I started learning it before I even had access to the Internet. My old Compaq PC had two or three really old websites only one page, they were basically adverts for AOL, CompuServe etc trying to get you to sign up for Dial Up :) Anyway I started looking at what was in the file and noticed it was basically text, so I started changing words around to see what happened color=blue to color=red. Then I found a really old version of Microsoft FrontPage and was able to start playing round some more. Dreamweaver for me is probably one of the few software products that I can say has gotten better with "age" I think the first version I had was Dreamweaver 3. Some of the code that thing generated was very very crude, and I tried several times to integrate the pages with my own and it became a nightmare to debug. The latest version (MX I think) seems to be decent, I don't use it an awful lot but find it handy to have when I want to see how something will look, or if I have forgotten how to format a tag (particularly useful for CSS I find) You will always find people who think it’s cool to use notepad only, and while I probably could claim to be one of these people and joyfully hack away at a white screen all day long, I ask why bother? Computers and software where made to make this stuff easier, now ok maybe a strict coder could know out HTML quicker than me (as I’ve probably lost some of the thought processes by allowing Dreamweaver to insert closing tags for me) the page will come out the other side just the same. Just an FYI I use Crimson for doing as scripting e.g. PHP, JavaScript
  14. Does this help? http://www.linlap.com/wiki/IBM-Lenovo+Thinkpad+X41
  15. Yawn! Go ask for some help or leave the system alone... Wal-Mart also sell hammers?
  16. Got to agree Lenovo are doing a good job with the "thinkpads" I am very impressed with my X41 Had it from here http://www.tier1online.com/Items/Item.aspx...ablet%20Edition It is "refurbished" and comes with just the charger, but apart from the screen lid showing marks the laptop was in A1 condition, I think I paid £350 around 3 months ago. (Keep in mind the first laptop they shipped me was a plain Lenovo 41 - and it was in a very shitty condition anyway they arranged for collection [at their expense] and they shipped out the X41 [Tablet] which I ordered) take it for what you will
  17. No ;) I have them turned off, they take up screen space :D

    lappy temp

Not sure if this applies (I have only worked with Latitude's) but if you hold down the Fn (Function Key) and then power the laptop on (Keeping the key held) you should get booted into the Dell Diagnostic Utility, this has a couple of useful battery options (Last used it for a similar battery issue)
  19. Tottally agree, better to be safe than sorry, then again there is always the old DoA trick ;)
  20. Yeah it does: p but I've still not got around to installing a lightning rod on my house and making it total EMP proof, just because it can kill electronics doesn’t mean it will. Maybe we should drop Myth-busters an email and have them do a show ;)
  21. Well exactly that's kind of my point... I'm working toward my MCSE, but I don't claim for a second to know much about networking, I mean ok I've got the basics and can trouble shoot, but thats what we have Network Admins for? I am a big beliver about having specalists do what they are good at... I wouldn't hire a MCSE to monitor my linux network or network security ;) but then again I've "blagged" my skills at an invterview so there might be some validity to your claims :D
  22. Hummmm MCSE is not a Cisco certification so securing your network is not the same as hardening a server now is it? :P Again - why would you give you printers access to the web? I can't find a single reason?
  23. Yeah, it's probally one of those things that "could" happen but 99.9% of the time it won't.
  24. The Static is BS IMO many years ago I was the most junior person at an IT Consultancy and on average we where knocking out 10-20 PC's per week, all I did while building them was touch a table leg, I have never overly taken precautions and I belive the "killer" static is a myth brough about by big coperations so that people who don't know what they are doing are scare mongered into paying to have RAM upgrades etc done for them. Ok your between a rock and hard place my friend. I would be looking at these things 1. Connections between Power Button and motherboard (just double check everything is right) 2. Try another Power Supply 3. Try another processor in that motherboard 4. Try another motherboard I had a very similar issue with one of our older PC's, fans would just spin, I replaced the motherboard and the problem was still there, so ended up replacing the CPU (at a grand cost of £9/$18 from eBay :D) it was an old pc but I needed a spare box.
