  1. "bordering on stalker status" I think you crossed that border a long time ago... Can you say creeper?
  2. It is called a wlan (wireless local area network) it is the same thing as a lan, except you are broadcasting your network wirelessly (is that a word?). I think you have the concept of wifi confused with something else. At home, when you plugged in your wireless router to your modem (assuming you have a modem), you just created a wlan. Google wlan, or read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_LAN
  3. Degrees don't just mean theoretical knowledge. At certain schools they might, but more and more universities are starting to deliver hands on experience (such as the one I am going to). We have loads of switches, routers, servers, mobile devices, and even a supercomputer to have labs with, and develop hands on experience with. And if you graduate with no experience what so ever, you are probably doing something wrong to begin with. Internships are essential to your college experience. I am only a freshman at college, and I have already had many offers for internships, and already have two summers of full time IT experience... And you are right, certain jobs/employers will offer more money than others. Also, certain degrees will offer you more money than others. For instance a degree in CS for a networking job will land you less money than a degree in Network Engineering will get you for that same job. Just as certain certs will get you different amounts of money. If you truly want to have a good resume, go to college, work over summers in internships (this will also almost guarantee you a job after college), and get those Certs in your spare time.
  4. Well, what employers have told me is I get 65k + with degree.
  5. Good idea on the lamp. Next time you walk into your local coffee shop, just ask the barista where there is an outlet, because you brought a lamp and want to plug it in... No one would give you funny looks or anything.
  6. What I really think is funny is Gerard really thinks that the FBI is going to do something about this... "Best of Luck". He obviously knows less about the U.S. legal system then Sarah Palin knows on foreign policy. If security research was illegal then all systems would be far less secure than they are today. In fact I am sure some people at the FBI/NSA/CIA probably watch the show. Pen testers drive positive change in the security world. At my university we do research in attacking bot nets, modifying trojans, and some really neat stuff with mobile devices. Rather than the government discouraging us, they pore grant money into this research to drive change in the field, and they work hand in hand to develop coursework, teach government officials, and assist in researching. Shows like Hak5 are great for exposing insecurities in systems. If there weren't things like HAK5 and all pen testing tools were illegal, the true black hat hackers would exploit the shit out of these tools on systems. Because without a doubt in my mind, I know these tools would still be out there, just less publicized, and as a result systems wouldn't guard against them. Gerard puts a bad name to this community... Maybe you should have properly conferred with FON and Hak5 before reporting them to the FBI. I feel like you probably got a response back from your "friends" at FON, and weren't happy that they supported Hak5 with routers, and so you shot back at Hak5 by filing a legal complaint against them. Even despite this, don't you think this is really a matter between FON and Hak5. If Fon truly does not believe what Hak5 is doing is right, shouldn't it be in their hands on how to proceed (legally or not).
  7. But, I bet I could call all five of them, have longer conversations, and in a shorter amount of time than you could texting them. I'm not saying don't text, I do myself, but Jesus Christ, 3-8k per month, that's a little obsessed dude. So say, you hit that 8k mark, that means you sent close to 270 text messages a day. Damn...
  8. QFE Instructions: 1. hit green button 2. enter phone number 3. converse It is called calling someone, try it out sometime, way more efficient then texting.
  9. Sadly I fear that the U.S. does not take issues or the candidates into account, more whoever runs a better campaign. I fear people are gaving favor of McCain because of Palin, which is probably the worst VP candidate in U.S. history. The supposed "executive" experience she has is bankrupting her car wash company. Her mayoral experience includes taking a city of 9000 with a budget of 5 million, to a defecit of 22 million. She supported the "Bridge to Nowhere" before she was against it. Her supposed governing experience is a joke. The republican party doesn't want to teach anything but abstinance in schools and then you have her daughter, who has the second baby on the way. All this time they are ripping on Obama's experience. He was in the Illinois State Senate for 8 years, and a member of the senate for 2 and a half years, and then there is Palin... McCain says he stands for change, but he has been in for 20 years, but what has he changed. He is a man that voted with McCain 90% of the time. Obama is clearly a better choice, but I see a repeat of 2004 all over again.
  10. Started watching Season 2 episode 2 I believe. One of my instructors mentioned the show, I googled it, and started watching. Technically I think I first watched an episode during the first season, but I didn't really get into it. A year later I rediscovered it and loved the show. I have been on the forums since Nov 2006, I have joined the IRC a few times, but I don't really like it.
  11. Degrijze, why do you care how the Hak5 uses THEIR product, that they PAYED for. It is the true essence hacking, finding multiple uses for a device. If you buy a lawn mower, but then end up using the engine in it for a goat cart, is there anything wrong with that? No, it is your lawn mower, you can do what you want with it, despite the intentions of using it as a tool for cutting grass. Also, on this occasion why would Matt have any reason to lie? The Hak5 team doesn't need to justify hacking a device that they own, that is what the show is about, hacking. Don't you think that the FON team would view it as a great marketing opportunity. Think of how many people purchased FON's because of Hak 5. As long as more than 20 people bought FON's then FON wins and just made a profit for free publicity. In closing.. Don't Hate.
  12. Like it was said earlier, get a university degree if you can. Certifications are great, but businesses like a university degree, it shows them you have the ability to learn, and although you may not have experience with their systems, they can mold you how they see fit. If you go the cert route, definitely check out CCNA, A+, MCSE, and take a course in object oriented programming. This will qualify you for entry level positions of network engineering or systems technicians. Oh, and if you do go the Certification route, don't think of it as a test you have to pass, think of it as material you have to learn to be better at your job. I would avoid places like ITT tech if I were you. Chances are if you see the school on a commercial you should avoid it.
  13. Hax0r!!! He has an Aim_Bot.
  14. How about a a small linux distribution on a external hard drive, and all the live distribution does is quickly make an image of the hard drive, with little to none human input (besides initially getting the computer to boot from a removable usb device). This would be good for forensic analysts, and would be a good tool for police agencies to quickly make an image of the machine, without the need to do much training to police agencies. If this is not enough, maybe make some software to then quickly analyze the image for search-able items.
  15. Without revealing too much of season 4, what are you going to bring to the show Snubs?
  16. How is the Hak5 team going to be able to put out weekly episodes? I haven't been able to watch the Hak5 live episode yet, but did they quit their day jobs? It seems like Hak5 is becoming a full time business. Oh, and I am all for the switch. As long as there never comes a time when Rev3 says that you have to do "this" for ratings (I'm not saying it does now, just supposing). I think Rev3 could help boost Hak5 to newer audiences, and as a result make it a better show.
  17. If everybody new everything about computers, most people on this forum wouldn't have jobs. Many people are content enough with only knowing how to open solitaire.
  18. Well, you still didn't show him the information, enjoy the ass beating. You are trying to hard to come up with a white hat use, sometimes there just isn't one (a good one).
  19. I like the shutdown -i command. However, I am going to guess you are at school, so you probably can't access the command line. If it is across the internet you probably need to get him to dl the bat file mentioned above (there are other ways but more complicated). You could just not shutdown his computer, and avoid being a jackass.
  20. No I was joking, but it does kind of sound like they ripped off the switchblade (having never seen the thing).
  21. Lol, I feel like a complete dumbass. I never venture into the USB Hacks section anymore (or Pandora Timeshifting), so I never saw this article. When I noticed my topic was gone from everything else, I thought that someone probably moved it here, and then I saw this. Well, anyway I feel dumb, but MS defenitly should give Hak5 some money for this one.
