  1. Read the end of the article again. Although the thumb drives are free, the software that goes with it costs money...
  2. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/micr..._msftlaw29.html I know the switchblade isn't exactly the most welcomed topic these days, but from this article it certainly sounds like Microsoft copied a switchblade, slapped a MS logo on it, and gave it to law enforcement. Thoughts?
  3. QFE Dell has to be my favorite brand overall. They are easy to work with, cheap prices, but good quality. Mac laptops are really nice, but too damn expensive.

    GTA4

Having played it now for a few hours I would definitely recommend this game. The game was extremely well made, and the environment you exist in is very realistic. The physics system is really good too. Even if you didn't like the old ones I would give this a try. They fixed a lot of things, like now the have a cover system with a good targeting system. The driving was also completely redone. The multiplayer is fun, but it is no call of duty. Get this game!

IGN gave it a perfect 10. It has given a 10 out a total of 4 times, and hasn't given a 10 out since around 1999.
  6. Just hop on the IRC, I'm sure you will find someone there.
  7. Edit: This site is great for script kiddies/want to be hackers. The videos are great for gray/black hat stuff, but only that. When I browsed the forum it was filled with either kids trying to hack their school network or complete noobs. The only knowledgeable people on the forum were cast members. In my opinion this site makes it a little to easy for people to do malicious things. Also, I don't like how they never mention ways to prevent yourself from being victim of said attacks (most of it I already know, but they should include it anyway). I do like their demo of BackTrack for complete beginners.
  8. Was this fixed in WinXP SP2?
  9. I believe like most industries it all depends on where you end up going to school. If you go to the local ITT technical institute, yeah your going to get shit, remember you get what you pay for/ have earned. I am going to major in Network Engineering Technology, with an emphasis in network security (I start in the fall), and the plan is to get a masters in cyber forensics. I visited a few schools before making my choice, and there is a lot of shit out there, you just have to be careful with what school you pick. I know I made a good choice for my field, but the article does raise a valid point. When you get some bogus degree from a school like ITT tech, they aren't going to teach you to be innovative. They are going to teach you the basics, how to use a few programs, programming in a few languages, a few basic hardware things, and then your done. It will be interesting to see where the security field evolves, but I disagree with this article. The current generation that is coming to age is the generation that grew up with technology. They know it very well, and a lot of them have been pen testing, doing stupid shit like trying to get around there school filter since they were little. I believe this article may be biased too, because I'm sure that the writer is one of the "retiring" security officials (I realize I present a bias as well). Although the article was well written and thought out, he didn't really go in depth with anything, or provide any research to back anything. Interesting topic none the less.
  10. And if you see a flash, duck under the organ, and it will protect you from the radiation.
  11. Starcraft would be my number one preference. Other titles I have enjoyed are: Team Fortress Classic, CS, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears of War, and COD4.
  12. I have heard of this type of system before, I know at my brothers University he gets an allotted total bandwidth per day, and after that they switch him over to the super slow bandwidth. I know the students there found a way around this, I'll have to ask him next time I talk to him. I doubt this would work, but it is worth a shot. If you get a multi port switch, you could try and switch from port to port sporadically. There is a possibility that the load balancer is looking at the port's MAC address instead of the true destination. If this doesn't work you could try to periodically spoof your mac to a different one. A program that swapped these addresses periodically would be nice.
  13. Why limit yourself to one?
  14. To me this doesn't make sense. I assume it wasn't the molex, because then it wouldn't have gotten any power, and if it was the SATA/IDE then you probably wouldn't have seen it in BIOS, but hey if it works for you, more power too you.
  15. Sure it is, you are just looking at it the wrong way. Next episode, do the show completely naked. I guarantee you won't be in your comfort zone. If you really want to, you can edit in some clothes before the show goes public.
  16. You could threat to beat him to death with his motherboard's manual. You have to earn motherboard manual beat ups, no we will just make him listen to post errors until he speaks in POST error format.
  17. Notice how a number of people have said check it at boot up or in bios. Well, I can't make you take advice...
  18. Check your bios to see if it can recognize the drive, if it can then windows is probably the problem.
  19. It's more Microsoft's way of making sure you use their virtualization products.
  20. Nice idea, that would suck for those "would be hackers" that get foiled by this. I just want to see one that gets plugged in and the device starts smoking.

    laptop

IMO you should just get a eeepc, but if you want a conventional laptop go with dell. @Vako (or insert forum mod here) You should sticky a "What laptop Hak5 recommends" topic. Seems like there a couple of these questions a week.
  22. Or, the stumble effect.
  23. Average... probably higher medium hotness. Nothing special. Check your eyes out.
