  1. Plus i bet all the haters would do no better of a job server security wise.
  2. End users know when we are available to reach, the SLA time for most issues and what can and can't be done by us instantly, as well as the process for requesting resources etc. The more prudent ones use their heads and work with us and help us resolve the issue sooner. The ones that leave shit till the last minute and then demand high priority end up shit out of luck. We are held to a set of KPI and a priority matrix, which takes precedence. Vital things naturally have a higher priority. We support 10,000 end users over 3 companies that supply the electricity to the entire state. We don't have time to mince around with whingers or people who are totally inept. The policy is in place and until it's changed or special circumstances arise, we stick to it.
  3. Top (and it's variants, I like htop) are brilliant.
  4. Well they got picked up. Hope they don't ruin it.
  5. I will never agree with this statement I agree with RMS principles but I think he can get overzealous at times and has unreal expectations at times. I would be happy to pay for games that run on Linux natively. ID software has led by example in the area imo, and will happily purchase games made by them. Try crunchbang for small and fast (Based on ubuntu). Partition your drive whilst installing manually. You can install games to a NTFS formatted drive. It's just a file system.
  6. I think the explanation should be a little more forth coming. No doubt this event inspired the password security in the last episode. I'm not hating on them because they got hacked. The show makes them a target for others who want to big note themselves.
  7. Not being able to run on linux is the fault of the developers of the games, not the distribution. Any games that run on linux natively run flawlessly. Heroes of Newerth looks great on my PC.
  8. Totally depends on what you plan to host.
  9. If there is the need to work whilst logged into their account then they either accepts the fact you have to reset it or you do those jobs during work hours. You can only bend over so far to help before it starts fucking with your own work. End users don't rule the world.
  10. We use remote assistance. I launch mine from a cmd run as my support account. c:>rcontrol soeXXXXX EDIT: you can rcontrol to the ip address too if the DNS is fucking up. They accept the request and then you take control. Only down side you cant see them move mouse cursor.
  11. I buy locally if I am desperate and want it now. Online is usually cheaper but I'm not fussy. Depends how rich I am at the time.
  12. Hacking hak5 impresses me just as little as some kid hacking his school network trying to change his grades. Keep giving each other reach arounds over your leetness, dickheads.
  13. Australia has MSY, PC Casegear and a few other good ones. I wouldn't touch IT Estate with a 50' pole.
  14. Lots of things have open alternatives if you want to go to the effort of looking them up. I'm all for hacking devices but if you brick it, it's your fault.
  15. We use one of these and it seems to be helping us somewhat.
