  1. Whilst I'm not running raid, obviously the ability to read all the major file systems is a must. I guess it will depend if they are using a software or hardware RAID solution, I am not that familiar with it all. There must some kind of recovery information on the volumes to aid recovery. The ability to extract that to rebuild would be handy, but i don't know if the information generated will be universal across all RAID arrays and operating systems.
  2. Yeah I have had this one too. I hate exchange and Outlook with a passion. Thanks MRGRIM, I will give it a shot, but seeing as it's the reply that isn't working when using reply to all, I'm not sure it will work.
  3. As mentioned elsewhere on this forum, set a root password and then use su
  4. hmm you left this till the day before it was due and then ask a member here to bail you out. I am not convinced.
  5. Got a funny problem. I have user who often sends emails to multiple recipients (entered manually or using Control+k, not a distribution list). Now for some reason, we random recipients of these email use the Reply to all function, the user who sent the original email does not receive the reply. I have checked everything I can think of and it has got me stumped. I am tempted to delete her email account and create another one. Anyone ever come across this before? I can fins no discrepencies in the header of the emails between those that work and those that don't.
  6. Hacking a facebook game, the bar on sadness has dropped to an impossible low.
  7. As long as i have a bash shell and a repository i am set lol
  8. When I was 19 I lived in a car in Perth on the other side of the country, had no job, no friends and received no benefits from the government. I ended up selling drugs and collecting drug debt for some well known figures and it was a pretty hairy lifestyle. I ended up clawing back across the country and did a crappy low level computer course at TAFE which taught me pretty much nothing. I ended up doing shit kicker jobs and eventually got an apprenticeship as a carpenter which I managed to smash out in under 3 years. All this time I was teaching myself about computers. After a wide variety of work I got a crappy level 1 help desk job were I managed to put my knowledge to some use and it got noticed by the right people. After some fill work for others being away and some secondment s to higher position i am now in the first week of my full time permanent job with Level 1,2 and 3 duties included. Bottom line is to keep slugging away and don't give up. Getting into the drug and criminal world isn't a good idea because it can only end in tears. Spends a few years looking over your shoulder, I can assure you it's no way to live. Put the xbox down and volunteer if you have to. Help a charity with their computer network or something just to gain experience. they don't have one? Offer to set one up. there is always something you can be doing, don't let yourself slide till you end up[ living like a deadshit till you OD or some fuck put's your lights out.
  9. If you are installing ubuntu and it doesn;t use your ethernet card, I will be amazed. Linux not working on school or work network is probably due to the fact that the machines don't belong to the domain and therefore you are unable to authenticate against the domain and be able to use the security groups privilages you are a member of.
  10. My mobo has express gate and I don't like being totally dependant on the cloud.
  11. Gnome and no compiz. Just an emerald theme, and a gtk and icons themes from gnome-look.org. I used compiz in the past but didn't really use the features so I haven't bothered this time around.
  12. My employer gives us free online access to all the training materials for most IT certifications avalable Microsoft, cisco, comptia etc. Just study yourself, and if you pass the test they pay for it.
  13. E8400, 4gb of ram, 2tb of HDD, dual 22" LCD, 9800GT
  14. I am starting a new job Monday that involes level 1 and 2 support along with some low-level sys admin and got there from being a service desk lackey for around 18 months. Entry level positions can be a big help and some corporations also will fund training for you. I have no formal certification and did not go to university, I am completely self taught and I beat several University graduates for the job. You need to get stuck right in and don't be scared of starting rights at the bottom.
  15. Has it been connected previously and been moved? Was there a DHCP reservation setup for it in the past?
  16. I have a cheap dual core box on my desk that I run a headless install of Windows Server 2003 and it is set up as a domain controller. I then use it to host a couple of vm's as clients and another few on my desktop. It helps you get the idea. Make sure you read up on anything you don't understand. Too many people can go click click next next in a wizard but don't understand what they are doing. If you don't know it makes it harder to troubleshoot.
  17. I also want to point out I hat epeople who try Linux, something doesn't work so they write it off and say it is shit. One of the best things about Linux is for the ability of the end user to become involved and try and fix bugs as they come across them.
  18. Vako I agree, Linux users do need to set aside some pride and be honest about things that may not be user friendly or how hard it is to get some things to work. Whilst I think Linux is better than windows (for me anyway) I'm not going to publicly shout down anyone who uses windows.
  19. The ubunut forums aren't used to track ubuntu issues and have fixes applied. You need to submit a bug report if you want to do that. The other reason I think people are harsh on Linux is because so many people already prirate Windows so they get it for free as well. If everyone always paid for windows I think they would appreciate Linux a little more because basicaly it is an amazing free product.
  20. I think people expect a little too much from linux distro releases. Look at all the crap we put up with from microsoft and not a word is said, but people will bitch about Linux to no end for the slightest glitch. I think we all know the chance of Microsoft doing a release every 6 months is.
  21. Reboot into safe mode and change it
