  1. Pretty much any print shop will be able to do this for you. Ask for a sample section printed at the desired size, and on a selection of paper types and compare the results/costs from several stores. If your feeling brave you can play a few stores off of each other for a price reduction.
  2. The only times i've looked into it, the cost has been far to high. There doesn't apear to be any companys that offer fixed rates, just those that will give you a quote based on the size, type and problem of the disk. If its just a case of your torrents, probally not worth it. If its something along the lines of your personal data, it might be. It is a problem at the moment, people say "just back it up on DVD's", but when your dealing with 1TB of space, with about 700GB of actual content, DVD's aren't cost effective. Kinda hope that holographic disc thats been on /. for the last 5 years eventually makes it the the UK. As for RAID setup, not a clue. But its something I need to start looking at. My current method is basically fill up an old HD, and storing that disc at my dads house.
  3. Can you mod OSX to look like Windows? That might be amusing...

    USB Apps

Just buy as large as you can get? There isn't a huge difference between them really. The bargin basement ones might not last as long, but my 1GB dane-elec has been going strong for a year now. And that includes a trip threw the washing machine and me falling in a lake.
  5. Sounds like fun, would you provide tuition at the same time? And how big were you thinking? It just sounds kinda like my art university to be honest. The main issue i can see here is cost, buying a suitibale site, renovating it, buying the equipment, maintinence, health and saftey, hireing people to work there, sercuiruty, insurance etc And once you start investing money or taking out loans it becomes a buisness, which makes it a lot harder. 10 dollars a day... you wouldn't even pay the electric bill, let alone everything else. Look at studios that currently exist, and see how much they charge for time and/or use of there equipment. Its a nice idea, and i'm sorry to piss on your parade like this, but if your going to do it, you should try and avoid as many of the pitfalls of the creative industrys as possible. If you can raise the money, find some good business people to help you set up the accounts/do the legal stuff, and get a good location, go for it. What brought this around? Its kinda intersting because I haven't actually watched TV for years. Just download what I want, when i want. Which completely alters your cultural outlook as issues you may not have heard about before become "mainstream", while the mainstream that was seems a distant and alien world.

    Muni WiFi

Tell that to our uni halls admin, back when Kazaa was something special they tried to block it. Net result: we routed it threw port 80 and charged people money/beer/food/"supplys" to set it up for them.
  7. Sweet, closest i ever got to a real AK was a airsoft replica made from an old real steel AK. Nice gun, although i prefer the "plastic raygun" style of newer HK/ Fabrique Nationale gear myself.
  8. You looking for a "duct taped to the case mod" or something that fits inside neatly? As long as you can supply the right voltage all you need do is solder in a larger battery. But on the down side it might catch fire and explode when you try and charge it.
  9. Apparently Adobe ported Photoshop to Solaris and another unix OS, but the sales were shit so it was canned. http://computing.ee.ethz.ch/sepp/photoshop...hotoshopSun.pdf What I really want, more than anything, is the ability to ALT-TAB between whatever OS i need for the task at hand. Or have an OS I can natively run windows, *nix and osx programs.... wait a second... isn't this the next Apple update?
  10. nice. I heard that actually macs aren't quite that secure because they have some unix apps that have security problems. But to just think that you're using a mac and that is reason enough to not give any concern to security, you probably deserve to be hacked. All i know about Macs is that the all powerful dual G5 tower cannot scroll a webpage without loudly caching to disk for some reason. And whats with the super loud fans that power up every 5 mins for no reason? I know, it is hard to walk past our print machine (totally unsercured (they used string to attach it to the desk...) viao laptop, running a default XP setup in admin with no passwords set... WITH INTERNET ACCESS, AND NO ANTIVIRUS!!) without doing something nefarious. What I think I'm going to do is compile a list of problems and nail it to the door of the "sysadmins" office. While i'm not going to cripple our entire IT dept 1 month before graduation, i know someone else will.
  11. [off topic] My uni uses Macs, and for that reason they have no firewalls, not interal sercuirity, DHCP lan access and loads of unguarded RJ45 sockets. Not sure why but the IT staff seem to not to think its needed!! They also have no blocks on accessing system settings! Now, when I plugged in my laptop with a HD installed pentest linux and did a scan, what showed up were the windows based machines the office staff and some lectures use... which have no internal sercuirity because its behind the firewall... Now, has anybody seen my white hat? [/off topic]
  12. Sorry dude, emulation and GIMP don't cut it, not for my needs just yet that is (photo and video editing and semi pro levels is not quite there yet on linux). When your dealing with 1GB TIFF images you need every last ounce of power you can get from your box.
  13. Its more sercure... but dang it i want photoshop for linux! And decent fucking wifi support...
  14. Not planning on using Linux as a primary OS, its not good enough for my needs yet, so this way i keep my linux install and windows 100% seperate, and i can nuke either without screwing the the other.
  15. Whats wrong with Macs? The price for one, and the stupid fucking god awful "mouse" that comes with it. After that there all cool.
  16. Time to finally work out what "Wake Up on LAN" is for i think. And just set another machine to trigger it. or Is there no way you could put the PC in another room and network it to a faster booting machine? I use a old laptop and another "server" in the boiler room for this myself. Its only a P2 but it comes out of hibernation in seconds, and the server has been on since christmas without a reboot. Plus the notebook is much quieter than my main machine, which is good for when girls say the sound of 20 fans isn't setting the mood... You don't even need a mouse, keyboard and monitor for this method. All you need to do is setup VNC/Remote Desktop on the headless box (just set bios to ignore the missing bits), and just network into it when you need to change a setting. Which if you set it up properly, you will hardly ever need to do. Just make sure the firewall has the right ports open (5900 & 5800 for vnc) and the antivirus is set to auto update. Then share the right folders and add them as network drives on your other PCs. Works like a charm for me. If you want to take it further, run something like Slim Server on the server for a fancy front end. or But you probally don't want to have to buy a notebook for just this. So what i would suggest is to look in the bios and see if there is an option to boot at a set time. I used to do this when i was a kid. Same problem, very slow boot, but i wanted 20mins on the computer before school. Used to work perfectly with win95. Then just put a winamp playlist in the startup links, and devise your prefered method of playlist creation (by hand or with some funky script). also For some reason older towers never had much luck with hibernation, always seemed to hang like your getting IME. The "server" I have is about 5 years old, and has no luck with it despite replacement PSUs and HDs, so it just stays on 24/7 now.
  17. I must caution you, if you are military or a military contractor, posting information like this can get you in the Brig or fired. Well don't I feel like I’ve missed out on all the fun. It’s all normal when i go to uni... But i come home and find that Mubix is now a moderator and is trying to court martial people! Did I miss a meeting? ;-) Congrats on the promotion.
  18. Is the linux distro a live CD or a HD installed linux? Dual booting? I said use a partition editor mainly because you can see what devices have what on them. What does /mnt/hdc actually have on it? Could be as simple as the devices plugged in the wrong/a different place?
  19. You really shouldn't have to be computer literate to *use* a computer, fix one, maybe. This is where Apple has it right, John Doe doesn't want a computer to learn about anti-virus, spyware, phishing, OS migration, platform dependability, and maintinence. John Doe wants a computer he can turn on, check his email, sync his mp3 player and camera, "win" some junk on ebay and IM his buddies. Its the computers job to make that all seamless. It should be like owning a car, you can drive one just fine without having a clue how the engine works. But MS, *nix and Apple are still all far from this goal, gonna be interesting to see what the chinnese can do with Linux. I doubt they can tolorate there computers run by american software for much longer, and 1.6 billion people is a damn big market when you set the prices. My dad (wintel admin for 15years now) was in China this summer, installing bootlegged copys of XP on a police station computers in return for a speedy passport replacement lol. Why were the police using pirated copies of XP? The gov was sold XP home, and there crime fighting software was only for XP pro... Not got AIM mate, we use MSN over here in europe, and what with my 3rd year uni work i'm kinda busy all the time. But if you want to PM me with any questions thats cool.
  20. Open up the drive with a partition manager (Gparted i like, comes with ubuntu live CD) and see what the physical layout of the drive is? Also, are you booting from a LiveCD or an installed linux system? If its KDE, try going into the desktop options and checking the "show device icons" bit, had me stumped for a few mins first time i loaded up linux. I have a dell, which also has /dev/hdc, its a compact flash drive i keep in there (full of drivers). Your system got a SD or similar slot in there?
  21. The reason we can't give you a step by step guide you can follow is twofold. One, its illegal. It violates the DMCA. And if we post a guide there is a possibility that the Hak.5's crews morning coffee will be interupted by teh laywers. Which would kinda suck for them. The second reason is its been done to death, the information is on google, you just haven't looked far enough...
  22. what bullshit politics? The same politics that annoyed me about the $100 laptop scheme from MIT, the same stuff that crops up in the ill-informed fools that fill the comments scheme at digg or /. Basically the linux fanbois who don't actually know anything about linux, or push it as a magic cure all solution that could fix your PC, world hunger and the middle east if it wasn't for M$'s money grabbing. Don't get me wrong, i know linux (or something that comes from linux) is the future of computing. Just wish there as more pragmatism about it today.
