http://www.dlss.be/ This is his site, all my graphics are just me remaking his layout in photoshop. I used the Banner advert and made the blood myself.

Hope you don't mind, i quickly reworked your design in XHTML/CSS. http://vako.ath.cx/dlss/ http://vako.ath.cx/dlss/dlss.rar (direct link to download it) its on a very slow server btw... I'd have a look at doing your design in CSS as it works a lot better than tables, and the layout is kept seperate from the content (i like to use PHP includes as well). If you view source it should be fairly easy to nick anything you like. Used just notepad and photoshop. Ohh and mad props to http://www.csscreator.com/version2/pagelayout.php

  6. Depends where you are really. This is UK biased... Best thing is to get a group of mates together and rent a house. Mixed houses are always better than a group of blokes living together, unless you like kitchens that are alive. Go for something in a cheap but decent part of town thats close to a 24hr store/petrol station. Make sure your neighbours don't have kids (drinking=noise). Large groups of people don't work so well, 3-4 people is a nice number. See if you can cut a deal with the landlord to put in networking in the house. I've done this and had the landlord pay for cables to wall sockets in all the rooms, a very nice linksys wireless router and the cable internet setup charge. Just have to convince them it will add to the value of there house and you'll do them a favour setting it up for free. Plus they always want the best kit. Learn to cook with actual ingredients, its so much cheaper. And make sure there are enough wall sockets in your room. I lived in a house that was next door to a pub for two years, whilst this sounds cool, its really not. Drinking should not be the easy.

But don't worry y'all i'm not gonna let bubba have his way with me just yet, I made it to the bus shelter and dug in with my RPK.

Probally my issue, I've been using Photoshop since version 3 so when I come across something with is aping it, it just doesn't work for me. Plus, CS2 just works much faster on my box (This is where Intel and Hyper Threading really pay off). Photoshop + Bridge is a killer combo, if you work with large collections of RAW images its a god send. Had a look at your site, and i see your problem. Now from a design point of view I'd junk the static background and scroll bars, but thats just me. They piss me off. Maybe make the main column have a minimum height instead of a fixed height and tile the background image? And you could try centering the main column with something like "margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" in CSS. That way it fits with no scrolling in a 800x600 window (which i'm asuming you are going for due to the narrow column size). Out of interest what are you using to make your site in? I got into web design last november and one thing i found was that the GUI WYSIWYG editors are crap for learning on. Going the Notepad2/++ route turned out to be a lot easier for some reason. Have you found the same or something different?

Because for the range of things I use photoshop for, GIMP just doesn't cut it. I'm not saying its bad or anything like that, its just not quite as good as photoshop IMO. (btw i'm trying to get into the photography world proffessionally, so I admit I may be playing a different ball game to most. GIMP is a perfectly viable alternative if your just looking for a feature packed image editor)
  15. Now that is damn useful for me atm. thanks!
  16. What exactly do you use Linux on a gamecube for? webservers? media centers? Might be fun to try it.

    Overclocking

Back in the day I overclocked a 166mhz P1 to 300MHz but the magic smoke escaped...
  19. Please clarifie what you mean, I fail to see how these are any more modifiyable then a switch (or a normal switch for that matter). I'm guessing he ment just the hacking part. Some linksys routers can take custom firmware that open up more features. I've done this on mine but i doubt it would help here as all it really offers is more detailed QOS settings, better UPnP support (it has a nice little GUI that lets you track the buggers down), more port forwarding settings and stuff like that. Plus it also helps because some linksys routers track every connection you make for 5 days, killing your performance. The custom firmware lowers that to around 2 hours (or lower) and speeds up apps like BT that use a lot of connections. That won't help for gaming but it makes managing your router a damn site easier.
  20. Its illegal... you want to meet your new 200lb roommate Bubba? In all honesty, the only way to pirate Game Cube games i'm aware of involves paying Nintendo $$ for a LAN adaptor and running a server on your network. I think the Broken (www.thebroken.org) did a segment on this, but i doubt its something your going to get from here. Sorry.

True, IE renders badly. Have you considerd doing the transparency in photoshop by just using the background as a layer in the image? Fairly easy to do, and you avoid the pitfalls of IE FUBARing your design. Sometimes JPEG's are better for some graphics, you have to expriment. Grab a demo of Photoshop from adobe.com, and play with the "save for web" feature. As for why people use IE instead of firefox, some people may not be able to install in on the machine there using (corp PC's, school PC's etc). Some people may plain just not like it. Your website has to reach the maximum audience. The most important thing to remember is that with webdesign, you are not in control of how your audience views your site. So, design for the maximum audience and all will be good. 90% of people with computers ARE NOT GEEKS. Its a bitch, i know. The amount of times i've done a layout, spent hours tweaking it to look mint in Firefox, then opened it in IE only to be met with a POS.
