VaKo
So people are starting to notice that some questions get asked a lot. "How do i learn to hack?", "which linux should i use?", "how do i sercure windows?" and others... So we could do with suggestions and actual content for a FAQ sticky linking to more detailed stuff elsewhere or one the wiki. Has anyone got anything they could offer? And also, for the beginners amongst us, what are your top ten questions when it comes to computers? If we can get an idea of what people often want to know it would help. Sparda
<another windows tip> Make sure that the guest acount is disbled and all active user acounts have a password. This is not to improve local access security but to improve remote access security. If you want you can enable auto logon un the userpasswords2 panle (to access that run "control userpasswords2"). Shaun
It's pretty hard to completely cut Windows out of the picture though. I mean I haven't booted Windows on my Main PC for months (the hard drive with it on isn't even connected), but I still have to run it on another PC for things that just can't be done in anything but Windows, e.g. I have to use Flash 8 for my job (the editor that is, it can supposedly run in Wine, but I've never been able to get it running). Dual booting really isn't a good solution if you actually want to get anything done (at least I found it a huge hassle to have to keep rebooting when I tried it), so if you don't have another machine to run Windows on it's not easy to use another OS. I suppose you can use VMWare or similar stuff, but that still doesn't allow you to use 3d acceleration and such.
Sparda
Agreed, dule booting is a hassle, I don't link it.

cooper
Wasn't the concept there that you had a dual-CPU machine, and one CPU was running Windows whereas the other was running OSX? Switching with such a setup should be pretty quick, but when you really need that power that got you to buy a dual CPU machine in the first place, you're gonna come up short. VaKo
If you could mix it with some kinda hibernation on a flash drive, so that you can effectivly pause a unused OS...
georgia_tech_swagger
Actually, rumor is that Adobe is indeed making products for Linux. Flash 9 Linux beta is due out this year, and Adobe has joined Project Portland, teaming with: *deep breath* Intel Corp., IBM, Hewlett-Packard Co., Linspire Inc., Mandriva SA, Novell Inc., RealNetworks Inc., Red Hat Inc., Trolltech, Xandros Inc., Xorg Foundation, KDE, Gnome ... in an effort to widely standardize the Linux desktop. Adobe has no reason to join that effort unless they are at least deeply interested in developing applications for Linux in a cost effective "one works for all" method. cooper
You are aware of course that for some time now Adobe has Acrobat Reader out for Linux? It's shite compared to programs like xpdf, but that's kind of besides the point. :)

VaKo
I really hope so, CS suite 3 on linux would probally be the push to linux for me. Just need a standardized linux thats as easy to use as windows (ie making CLI usage a rarity). It was on Solaris once but sales were so poor it got cut. It basically all pins on vista though, if its good, linux will become a less likely option for buisnesses (IE people who buy 50 licencess at once). If Vista sucks, then linux is a more likely option. The Mac market will probally grow a little, but little else.
