Loki
This can be a very bad idea depending on your location. The last thing you would need is to wake up and have the MPAA/RIAA banging down your door.

Justin Ewing
Why?
Loki
I am assuming that you are in the U.S. But last time I checked most if not all Tracker sites are hosted in foreign countries which helps keep MPAA/RIAA away. If you are planning on hosting this from your own home I would give you about a week at best before the authorities step in and your charged for copywright infringement. stingwray
I'm sorry but Torrents /= Illegal. Bittorrent is a valid data transfer protocol which is great for people who can't afford web hosting with large amounts of bandwidth. Also Windows 2003 is not as bad as people like to say, because you know, its cool to bash microsoft, you have to be careful about security, but you should be on any server. If you want to set up a Torrent webiste then you need to create a torrent tracker. Loads of them about which will run on a webserver, choose which one you like the look of. Other than that you just need a website to host the actually torrents, so what you need there is dependant on what you want to do with it. Sparda
Why? 1. You should only use it if you are forced to use it 2. It's bloody expensive, why use it when there are much better solutions that are free.
VaKo
I'd mainly use windows because ASP scales better than PHP. And MySQL is a bit flakey at the high end. But at the the lower end, Linux is a better choice due to the price difference.
Darren Kitchen
I say go for it. Read up on copyright laws. Hell, your gut should tell you what not to host. And Server2003 isnt that bad. For a beginner I find it easier to get going that a LAMP configuration (though I'll get flamed for that comment). The best thing that will come from this experience is the knowledge you'll gain from setting up the server, installing the torrent packages, configuring everything, securing it (on windows thats like half the work). And when it's all said and done a lot of that will transfer to any OS. So go for it, and be mindful of your good friend google.

I'm with aardwolf on this one Getting apache 2.2* php5 mysql and a mailserver took me all of 10 mins to get working on a Windows box. And I have yet to get them all working perfectly on a linux box. Darren Kitchen
I'm saying regardless of whether you go with IIS / MS SQL or Apache / MySQL, you'll be learning similar principals.

Forgotten
Well once you've gotten LAMP for your Server2003, or the whole schibang for Linux, you officially have a website. Next is to open ports. I suggest www.portforward.com and look for "HTTP" after choosing your router. Also, once your tracker is online, to port forward that too. Or if you're lazy and like viruses you can give your machine a DMZ. Tracker Software: http://tinyurl.com/2u5dcz or some of the original documentation: http://www.bittorrent.com/guide.html

Sparda
Let me just explain what I found funny about that quote. LAMP stand for Linux Apache MySQL and PHP, so you basically said "Setup Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP on server 2003", it only made me laugh because I automatically translate LAMP to Linux, Apache MySQL & PHP in my head :P
Forgotten
Understandable, but I find LAMP the lazy way to run a server. All servers, imho, should be running a very stripped-down stable linux distro... It appears more stable and you control what you want with a very fine comb. Famicoman
WAMP, then. But dude, if you get this up and running, I would love for you to write me an Analog5 article for it.

Deveant
most warez products have it in it, same as "only n00bs do warez"
cooper
But, as others already pointed out, he just wants to host torrents. The only one claiming those torrents are for warez or other illegal-to-distribute items is you.
Freakish
You don't know that the torrents are warez, it could just be some harmless child porn.
