  1. Another thing is use a span port on your switch. This takes the IDS out of the loop. It also allows you to tune what traffic hit your IDS.
  2. Cant you do this through virtual centre?
  3. With SNORT you really need to maintain it and do alot of tuning to make it a worth while tool. Once you have done this it is a great tool to use. Though I recommend that you set it to only drop the obvious and then log the rest for inspection, Using tools in conjunction with SNORT such as acid or base will make handling the output from SNORT a lot easier. ACID: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rdanyliw/snort/snortacid.html BASE: http://base.secureideas.net/about.php I use the IDS tools in Astaro Security gateways in alot of deployments as in the SME space this is the only way to get these tools in place. Though this will only catch data that is passing through the interfaces of the appliance.
  4. If you have a nokia phone you could use JoikuSpot and turn your mobile into a hotspot and connect via wifi. http://www.joikuspot.com/aboutJoikuSpot.php
  5. It is cool isnt it saw this a while ago, amazing what you can do with money. The car is worth about 20K stock and I remember from reading it has had about 4 times that spent on the modifications LOL. Also the Axel isn't broke the suspension is just sitting on an angle as they are using Air Bags to lower the suspention. When the car is risen to a height that the car can be driven the wheels will go back into position. This is due to the Independent Rear suspension and it geometry in the from wheel drive Honda's What is sad though is that I remember seeing pics of this car being burnt out, spent an hour looking for the pics but cant remember where.
  6. 8 and 16bit games are where it is at for sure. Especially all those arcade classics. I have been watching SYSTM @ revision3 and they are haing a month of MAME and building a full cabinet which would be sweet to be playing tetris on.
  7. Install Linux and run Kinodv it is a great little video editing app. http://www.kinodv.org/
  8. x2 on that, I have been looking for one for ages to do it to for my Mexican walking fish.
  9. If you are doing this to monitor some one it becomes obvious to the user when you are logging in to view via VNC as it freaks with the desktop, we had a boss that used to do it and we could tell as it would drop background images and do other weird things to your desktop.
  10. If you only have $200 to spend get a box and look at ipcop, smmoth wall or playing with ipTables.
  11. NMAP and scan the IP subnet that that card is using
  12. Depends what type of Firewall you are looking to play with some good firewalls security wise are Checkpoint, Cisco Pix and iptables.
  13. what about http://pastebin.com
  14. Hirens, Backtrace 2, DSL, nUbuntu, regular Ubuntu, Haking9 Live CD, Knoppix, RHEL Rescue CD, Fedora Rescue CD, Windows Authentication boot CD I think that is it.
  15. Looks cool, I will have to make my interface for my place wii friendly never thought of that.
  16. Just one of them they are all backups of the FS meta data. Though because yo have formatted you drive what I said is most likely going to work as at the time of running the mke2fs it shoudl rewrite the superblocks, journal and meta data so that makes recovering it very unlikely, though I am not an expert in the field.
  17. Just use nmap and then have it scan for new IP's on the LAN. nmap -sP <IP range> this will give you a list of the IP' s in the range and there MAC address. So you could take it a step further and run namp in a script parse the outpu and report via email or something any macs that should not be on the LAN. Another thing you could do is parse your DHCP log.
  18. I think you are pretty hosed in relation to recovering your data as you have reformatted the partition. This will have blown away the journal and build a new clean one. Though here are the steps I would have tried to recover your File System before you did your mkfs.ext3 over it accidently. 1. Find a backup sperblock: # mkfs.ext3 -n <partition> This will display the backup supreblocks that it would have use to create the File System. I keep a copy of these for all of my servers. 2. Run fsck using a backup super block: # fsck.ext3 -b <superblock> device When you run this it will ask you questions and require your interaction you can add a -y and it will answer yes to all of the questions. Or use the -p to preen or repair the file system. 3. Reboot This will have placed you File System back to a clan stats or fsck will run again and reboot and this will fix it if it is able to be repaired. You could try this against the parttion that you did a mkfs against though I dont see it working as the journal and backup superblocks will have been nuked and rebuilt clean.
  19. I am looking to use these as triggers for larger relays to control 240v current devices in my house (240v is standard voltage for housing in Australia) I am looking at doing basic things like turning things on and off. Though I wil lbe building a nice web interface with all of this. I am hoping to do all of it on Linux so that will mean all custom code as most of the devices software is for Windoze. So in the case of the IP/Ethernet devices it will be just writing simple apps in something like Python using TCP sockets and sending the data, the stuff that connects via USB and parallel may be a bit trickier.
  20. I look for some one that is n expert in the area that there blog is about. I find alot of blogs through Podcasts
  21. WOW Metatron sounds like an awesome project I would love to hear more about it. And it also makes my network look small. I have just updaed my Dia file to show you guys how my network will look in the new place we are building. Link to file: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2400/178660...983dc12_o_d.jpg The VM server will contain all of my internal servers such as ADC, File Server, Asterix PABX, Mail Server, AV Gateway. I am looking at a quad core box for this using NFS/Samba to mount all of the storage. The MythTV Box will be linking to its storage via a VLAN and connecting via ATA over Ethernet,
