ive got an old laptop thats running windows xp and ive had the strange desire for the last couple of days to crack into something. tried setting up a virtual machine but apparently my computer doesnt support hardware virtualization so it makes it difficult. so id like to try messing with my old laptop. im not asking how to crack into it. ill figure that out myself through research and trial/error. i just wanna know how i should setup my old laptop so that i can have some fun getting into it. im a total n00b at cracking. i create things not break them so i dont know much. i dont want to use script kiddie tools if at all possible. i'd like to learn how to actually do things instead of just letting a program do something i dont understand. i have physical access to my laptop as well as full admin rights obviously. edit. if your confused please refer to the 2nd post

here is my goal for the next local con Laptop(current is fine) and charger for said aptop bt3 cd knoppix cd 20count stack of dvd-rw's 10count stack of cd-r's wireless mouse 4 AA batteries small notepad + pencil digi camera of at least 2mega pixels pineapple (literal. for jokes) mp3 player (hopefully at least a 4gig with custom firmware) DSi(if its out) PSP 2 1gig memsticks ethernet cable 20 hak5 stickers at least. a nice backpack to carry it all in and hopefully a carbon copy of my laptop's hd on backup at home lol edit: and of course my skull crushers from skull candy. dark joker can attest to their awesomeness lol

i agree windows is crap at times but im more than willing to bet everyone here feels it has its uses. due to its large popularity and wealth of native software(mainly games for me).

i have no idea if this is related or not but a moth ago i checked the local craigslist for tech jobs around my area and there had been only one in the last 3 months. i just checked it and theres at least 2 in every catagory as of yesterday and today.

i have no idea. matt made the post that the bbs were back online. so he is a suspect. but he said it was thanks to famicoman. so he was a suspect. darren is like a project leader guy so he is too. i have no idea who is running this thing lol

im assuming from the topic that matt posted that famicoman is still running the bbs, ive got a competition kind of thing going(check link in sig) and i need the co-operation of the person running the bbs to be able to give the reward to the winner. i need to be able to transfer over 400mil gold. if it helps my cause in this and your too lazy to check the contest topic. the contest is who can donate the most to hak5 and i need the daily transfer limit increased. and since our LoRD is registered it can be changed and increased. what im asking is how to get in touch with him. he hasnt been on the forums since oct5 according to his profile edit the contest is set to end in 3 days. and i know that with the speed of the internet contacting someone shouldnt take nearly that long but the internet is only as quick as the people who use it edit: okay so famicoman said he isn't running the bbs anymore so can anyone tell me who is and how to contact them?

i do love the counter commercial by apple. where pc is dividing cash into marketing and fixing vista. clever and didnt cost a fortune. im a pc user and a windows user. but id be happy with a mac as well. though i choose linux over both vindows or mac lol. its amazing they put that much money into marketing a product thats almost an industry standard lol. i see it this way.

would be fairly useful for certain things. but i wouldnt own one unless i was going to start doing tshirt designs.

i keep getting this error VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was either not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason. Please install the virtualbox-ose-modules package for your kernel, e.g. virtualbox-ose-modules-generic.. VBox status code: -1908 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED). everytime i start the machine. i know im supposed to download that package but. well look at the screenshot attached i restarted as i was supposed to(my boot menu is now flooded with ubuntu lmao) and tried again and i got the same error again. does anyone know what the problem is? my google search revealed that i needed to install that package which is why i did. and when that didnt help i installed multiple packages. if it helps im trying to run a win 98 machine. but i do have the installation disc. virtualbox ose

ive used the gimp before. thats what i used before i found my old ps7 disc. and there are things it can do that make it more effective for my art style than the gimp. the gimp can do everything photoshop can but its more convoluted and harder to reverse later on then i got cs3 and its stuff made everything easier than the gimp. ill be using the gimp but only if it would be less trouble than using my old xp laptop and its copy of cs3 lol.

@dingleberries: thanks for the helpful input @x3n: thank you very much for all the info. decided to use my old lappy for cs3 if i cant use gimp effectively enough. at least until cs3 is better supported by wine

im trying to get cs3 to work under ubuntu studio with wine Photoshop.exe. it works sorta lol. it starts loading and i get the splash screen and the window opens up. but before the program finishes loading it dies and the console gives me an error. whats confusing is that the error is different with each run. sometimes its just a missing dll(which if i searched through my vista partition i could find it lol) i'd like to know why the errors that cause the program to abort are different with each run. it kinda goes against everything ive learned about a computer needing a human to screw it up lol.

if you choose the right shipping and insurance they will take the package back unless they get your signature. here in the states we are trusting when we shouldnt be and lazy as hell. not to mention cheap. the combination of those 3 = packages on doorsteps luckily i live in a good neighborhood. packages never get stolen. ive had neighbors call on more than one occasion saying ups screwed up again and delivered to the wrong house.
