  1. One thing I noticed is no one mentioned any hardware firewalls or routers. Get a decent, and secured router(Change that damn default password!!) and add something like ZoneAlarm pro (Not free version), along with AVG and you should be pretty good. This does not protect you from installing anything you downloaded, but ZoneAlarm SUITE (configured properly) will usually catch anything trying to install, add to the registry as well as change your hosts file, startup programs, and email software, or use of your internet connection. The version I have uses SpamBlocker, Anti-viirus and Anti-Spyware built in. Ad-aware and AVG are a good alternative to the Zone Alarm virus and spyware. Its best to have more than one backup, but you don't need them all on at the same time, just schedule the scans and let zone alarms run all the time. Also, disable windows firewall and uPnp, the server service, internet and connection sharing service (ICS), remote registry service, msn messenger service, remote desktop service, and computer browser service. These are not needed, and if you want to share files over a home network, you only need Server, Browser, and ICS services running. Oh, and windows defender(if you downloaded it or are running Vista) There is a patch out for Defender, but I still don't trust the bugger.
  2. Use an .htacces file to block both the ip address and the User agent. Robots.txt will not work.

    Joost

I stopped watching TV a long time ago. I couldnt tell you most of the stuf fon there, aside from a few core favs, like MythBusters, Avatar, Ghost Hunters, and Heros, all of which I always seem to miss and end up having to..well, not going there, but anyway. Seriously, TV has not much to offer that I havent found online, and much more diversity has been online because there is NO restriction to content or opinions when people post stuff. TV is regulated and doesnt allow rich content to really show whats going on in the world. Try TruthTV if you get a chance. It may be mostly politics but it has a lot of techy shows and things you will never find on tv. RantTV, Hak5, etc... Yes, these do require us to do a little more, like searching online and downloading files, etc, but what if that was all in one place, and seemless, like Joost says it is trying to do. While the YouTubes and similar are cool and all, they only deliver the content that people want on a short term basis. A quick 5 minute video here and there, but what if there were full length shows, like the tech IPTV shows, but things like the discovery and history channel. Movie channels, not just US, but worldwide, foreign films, forgein news, current events, activist television (and I don't mean terrorist tv) indy media, etc. Point is, I pay $100 a mnth for cable I never watch, and I don't even have a box or on demand. No digital cable, and it still cost that much. I have just the basic plus and internet package, and it's bleeding me dry. The only reason I keep it is because my daugter won't be able to get TLC, NICk and Disney for her shows. An I admit, I watch the occasional Sponge Bob episode. But for less than 5 channels that we watch, is it worth it? The cable industry is turning into the phone industry and everyone is starting to get disgusted with both. FCC was not meant to block content, they were only created to control frequency traffic overlaps and regulate radio stations for not interfering with government communications. It wasn't meant to kill of Howard Stern, or half the content never aired on TV. I welcome Joost, in any form from any company that can deliver an alternative. Where is there an alternative, with Cable, Standard TV, HDTV, and Satelite all aring the same shows, just you pay someone else to see them. ok. I ranted enough....time to change the channel..
  4. What's that? it's a backdoor built into windows... like most microsoft products It comes with Media Player Classic (from source forge) which is a basic rip from windows media player 6 but with tons of addons and support for other formats, like quicktime. Its not a real "Windows" program from microsoft, just named media player after the original windows version.

  6. For still images, hit the print screen button and paste into any image editor. For proffesional looking video, camtasia studio. Not sure about that Vegas program peopl euse (Its a sony product, try google) but I know Darren and the guys use it for their editing. If you don't have the programs, but have two pcs with video in/out on each, use one to record the others screens and vice versa sort of like a two vcr hookup.
  7. How can I rearrange the code? Have you looked at it? I'm open to suggestions. Like I said, it's not perfect, but it works for basic bitmaps. I can make it load the jpegs, but they will not show up on reboot. The problem woul dbe that in order for the jpeg to show up, you would need to click properties on the desktop, then the deskop tab, and it "pre-delects" the jpeg because it is being pointed to in the registry. If you then hit ok it loads the ne wimage, but this defeats the purpose, because you could just have loaded from the menu to begin with only you would have to scrool through to find the image. In vb6, it can set the image right away, and it refreshes the background, but I wanted to challenge myself in dos and vbscript. Given time, I am sure I could rejigg the code, but it would still need to find a way to load jpegs and gifs, which I think would require more api calls from something like a compiled program, similar to "app a day" wallpaper changer. His goes a step further and not only changes the wallpaper, but gets the images form the web, which I think would require some perl or web scripting combined with the dos batch and vbs files I provided. That is a bit over my head for the scope of what PureZero asked for.
  8. I have added comments to the batch script for people running windows 98. I noticed that ir throws an error when running because 98 uses "cscript somefile.vbs" instead of "call somefile.vbs". Also, 98 used REGEDIT4, not the "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" for reg files. Be sure to point to the path where your bmp's are as well. Windows 95/98 keep them in the "c:windows" folder, unlike my script which uses "C:WINDOWSWebWallpaper" by default for XP.
  9. have you ever tried that with Slurp (yahoo). Slurp never follows the rules...bad yahoo...bad... It can be done using the .htaccess file for bots that don't follow the robots rule. Example: SetEnvIfNoCase user-agent "Zibber" bad_bot=1 <FilesMatch "(.*)"> Order Allow,Deny Allow from all Deny from env=bad_bot </FilesMatch> I use this for about, oh, 30-40 bots that I block. A lot of bots don't follow the robots.txt rules and are only interested in harvesting emails and php pages that use things to post messages, like Guest Books and BB's.
  10. Ok, I have worked out a basic batch and vbs script that will set a random bmp file for next reboot. The problem I am having is that it won't add jpegs or gifs at this time, so if you want to use it or modify it, you would need to add all your bitmaps in one folder and point the scripts to that folder. http://www.twistedpairrecords.com/randomwallpaper.rar The code is not perfect, but it does the job, and since I only spent a little time messing with it, I am sure someone can do it in less lines of code. I am no programmer, so what you see is a n00bs work at best when it comes to scripting. I am better in VB6, but since the question was for batch scripting, I decided to give it a shot. I just want to point out that while most of this was done from my head (concept anyways) most of the vbs code was found online using Google. So I have to say what many people on the forums have said, check GOOGLE first and then come here with the questions. I had no knowledge of how to do this before looking at other works first, so take the time to read and experiment. Oh, and if you have VMWare or similar, try out your testing your work there first. It makes for a much safer day when things go wrong with your scripts.
  11. http://digg.com/tech_news/More_that_350_00..._8_hours_outage Just to let everyone know, it wasnt a problem at Hak5, but ALL or the sites hosted at Dreamhost.
  12. If you look at the reg key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop you will notice that there is a string called "ConvertedWallpaper" where this is the actual jpeg file your using. It then CONVERTS it to a bitmap, which shows up in a string below as "Wallpaper" and "OriginalWallpaper" is the previous set wallpaper. You can copy the string value and paste it into Start/RUN to see the OriginalWallpaper or Wallpaper image from each string. I am not sure how it is doing the gif animations yet though, but I am looking into that. I can make the background change and update using visual basic 6, but to do it all in dos batch scripting and vbs is a bit more challenging. I have had little experience with VBS and WScript host files. Its similar to VB6, but foreign to me so far. Not used to all the CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") stuff, but I am working on it. I have the basics for the scripts down, and even a reg file that will set a new wallpaper, so that on reboot, it will refresh to the new wallpapwer, but to have it do it without rebooting is a bit more challenging.
  13. Dude! What is the heat like in that thing? Need some liquid cooling... What are your cpu and hdd tempatures like and what kind of power is it consuming? Looks like it would double my Electric bill!
  14. For Windows XP Kill "EXPLORER.EXE" in task manager and then use task manager to start "EXPLORER" and your desktop will reload. You will need to restart any running apps, like 3rd party anti-virus or firewall software though, because will sometimes not catch the refresh. I think in most NT builds you can do this now, because the desktop shell runs like any program that may crash, and the rest of the system will keep running, even when it seems to be locked or CPU is at 100%. I use to do this when internet explorer would freeze and nothing on my desktop can be clicked, but rarely seems to happen to me anymore. XP is pretty stable as long as you have a good firewall and anti-virus, and problems only seem to be when I am online on a website, so switching browsers usually fixes any problems with lockups or crashes. Windows 98 and below sadly are not so easily fixed when this happens. I have tried Mac's and a few differnet Linux distros. Peronally I like Windows XP, but if I had to switch, I would probably go with Fedora Core 6.
  15. "jhead" : Edit EXIF data in jpeg images. Also allows you to get the original thumbnail from the images http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/ So, what do I care? Ok. I am going to tell you about a little command line tool that will let you change, edit, remove private data from your camera images, or if your a pervert, retreive the original thumbnails from all the "pron" you got on your pc. Jhead is a program to extract EXIF info from images, but more importantly, retreives the ORIGINAL thumbnail image from cropped or edited images, if they are still embedded in the file. The easiest way to see if your image has stored the EXIF info is right click on one any picture and go to the SUMMARY tab and click ADVANCED. If you see your Camera data there, like the Make of your camera, model, ISO speed, etc, then you have EXIF headers in the image. If your image says "Creation Software" and its not something like Photoshop, but says DigitalCamera, then chances are your image contains the original thumbnail fromwhen the picture was taken. Ok, so lets say your on a forum, google images, myspace, or someones personal page and you notice little cropped images or edited artwork from a photo they took. You can save the image to disk and get its properties to see if it has any data to extract. If its saved with Photoshop (i think 7.0 and older) or says DigitalCamera as the software, then there is a good chance you can still get the original thumbnail, which may contain all sorts of interesting data. The most famous of these finds was for Cat Swartz, a certain TV host who took photos of herself topless and cropped the image for use on her site. The photos were saved with the original thumbnail in the picture, and thus was extracted and blown up for your viewing pleasure. (pervs..anyway) Check out the site for jhead: http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/ and its command line instructions for removing private info: http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/usage.html I have also made a quick bat file to automate the Thumbnail extraction (if it exists) for you, so if you want to you can download the rar file from my site: http://www.twistedpairrecords.com/jhead_exif_reader.rar Just wanted to add: http://www.hutta.com/thumbs/tech.html He has made some scripts to auto download them from google and extract the data on the fly.
  16. Depends what he is asking for? Telnet to a Shell, you need to connect to a telnet port, like 23, 22, or ftp (21) etc. On port 80, the only way to get data is construct your own http request. Example: "GET /index.html HTTP/1.1" would return the root index.html page from the server, like viewing source from a web site, you would see all the HTML. You could do this while at work to bypass most proxy and firewalls, since they rarely stop telent on the LAN and you could request pages from most sites and read them as text or save the tet as something.html and open it in your browser even when webfilters block access to the sites. Standard http commands apply, so long as they accept them on the server side. Basic ones, like HEAD, PUT, OPTIONS, POST, etc... You can do a lot of command line injection, but would usually require a custom program, not telnet, to construct packets with extra payload info, similar to buffer overflows from the address bar, but chances are, this isnt going to happen with a simple windows xp telnet session. But for the most part, why would you be connecting to anything other than port 23 or remote shell ports? If he has to ask, then he doesnt even know to begin with...if he KNEW everything about telnet like he claims, he wouldnt be asking. Period.
  17. For pre-editing and effects, etc, try Virtual Dub and AVI-Synth(to import other formats). Virtual dub is also great for video and audio compression, especially xVid avi's, but just about any codec works with it. There are tons of sites with tutorials, and once you get used to its inner workings its easy to link cut up segments and merge them to one video. I use it when I need to merge Subtitles with forgeign films. There are a few other programs to use along side, like Subtitle Converter, which changes SSA text files to SRT which you would merge in Virtual Dub. All of these can be found for free online. You can even use AVI Synth with Virtual dub to open VOB files(ones without DVD encryption, for that, use something like dvd shrink or decrypter to rip and then edit with Virtual Dub)
  18. There is always Quicktime Alternative: http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTime_Alter...ve_download.htm Lets you watch MOV files right in Windows Media Player.
  19. I wonder if the recent Britney breakdown caused some sort of subliminal messages in the crew? Space Monkeys had nothing to do with it! Blame it on Britney Spears...
  20. Reminds of the "Patrolling with Sean kennedy" video where he goes all military with the clippers. He gives an entire rundown on why it is important to have a clean haircut, etc... if anyone has doesnt know what I am talking about, check out RantTV and STFMKTV.
  21. Not that this topic really has anything to do with hacking mods or coding (should probably be in everything else), and I fail to see how the relies even were related to the orginal post, but I always liked this one : http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=66...741&q=n00bs
  22. There are plenty of FF and Opera sploits out there as well. I was just warning people for something most of us use or have installed and take for granted. There are even sploits for Flash out there, so any of you YouTubers and Video enthusiasts would be wise to apply this method to Flash or other plugins as well. A lot of the time Flash related problems are cross platform, and for some OS's they are not as up to date on the releases as they are for Internet Explorer and Windows.
  23. Anyone using Shockwave 10 for internet explorer should disable it. There is a problem in the lastest version (Shockwave 10.1.4.020 Released 9/28/2006) for Windows Internet Explorer. When exploited it will crash Internet Explorer, or if crafted well enough, do more than a DOS in the browser. A basic exploit for this can be found on the Milw0rm site: http://www.milw0rm.com/exploits/3042 so I am not going to post any exploits, but I am sure anyone wanting to test it will figure it out. I would disable this for everyday use and only turn the settings on when needed for specific sites you want to view that use Shockwave! ----------- (For those of you who are going to ask me how to disable this attack) To disable this, open internet explorer and goto: -Tools -Manage AddOns -Select "Addons that have been used", not the "currently loaded" in internet explorer. Then slide to the right and see if SwDir.dll is enabled. If so, click the item and then select Disable For those of you running anything before 6.0, the only way to block it is either uninstall Shockwave, or use an alternate browser like Opera or Firefox. EDIT: By the way, I am using Oepra, but there are times when Internet Explorer comes in handy.
  24. Assuming your on Windows XP or later, Goto any folder, click "Tools", then "Folder Options", then "File Types" and go down to xls extension. Then click "Advanced" and you can choose an icon manually(select the OpenOffice executable or an Excel executable and it will pull up the icon for either program and you can choose what to set it to.) or pic your own custom icon. You can allways manually set programs to open with other programs and set the icons to anything you want except for standard shell icons. To do that you would need to either hack shell32.dll or make a registry hack, neither of which are easy tasks and can ultimately f*ck your pc. Hope this helps reset them for you.
  25. The orange from the Zune theme matches the Suits so I made this little photoshoped wallpaper. Its now in the wiki/goodies section as well if anyone wants it.
