  1. 1. If your version has the ability to do the Firmware hack for Linux Flashing, you can use it to configure it any way you want. Check Google. 2. Not sure, but try Google. 3. CASE: The notebook itself, or the carrying case? If someone took he laptop, but left the carrying case somewhere, it would be of no use. Also, need to make sure it allways on and would require power. If modding the laptop, so when it is on it powers the GPS, you woulnd need room in the laptop shell somewhere, which is very limited, but could be done. Ask the guys over on www.hackaday.com because they do a lot of GPS mods, and they have one that logs data to a harddrive using a solar powered gps by itself. A mod of this would work for you. I would think having it built with the laptop to do the same thing but off the laptop battery would be the way to go, then write a batch to start each time the pc starts and periodically updates a remote server with its last position, say every 10 minutes. You would obviously kill this task when your running it yourself, but start it any time you walk away from the laptop. Also, make it so it will auto start in safe mode or after booting (Before you login), so no one can defeat it from starting except you. Make it a service, so it will allways start with the pc and password protect it. Also, try Google.
  2. AS far as uber editing goes, this is one of my favs. All of his work is great, but for music, I like this one of his best:
  3. I hope people realize my comment was sarcasm, as in powering off the machine....
  4. Does this update it on reboot, or while still active? because it does not update it on mine untill I reboot.

    Call 4 Help

Ok. Don't have Ubuntu anymore, but I had a copy at one time and it was almost identical to my Fedora 6 install. I don't know if this helps, but if your using the gnome desktop, goto the toolbar and menus for system/administration/ and then services. Scroll down and see if SSHD is listed. If so, check it and start it. Then you should be set. I can't see what your desktop looks like or what your running, so give us a little more info. If you just running the shell (no gui) then maybe someone else might know where to check for it, but if a terminal window doesnt return anythign when typing in SSHD then you probably have something misconfigured or its not installed. Check the site where you got your copy from. See if they have a wiki or specific install notes for your version. EDIT: Don't know what interface your using, but here is where my SSHD service can be started and stopped http://www.twistedpairrecords.com/sshd.jpg

    Call 4 Help

Even when I use sudo, it says command not found; I just installed it and it isn't working. The SSH command works though. Not sure what option syou have, but under the control panel, see if there is one for services. Als, see if SSH is there, if so ,start it. Same goes for FTp, HTTP Serfvers, etc. don't have it in front of me, but I will load it up on my VM and see if I can remember where the settings were...what version are you running? and what gui? Gnome, KDE?
  7. Look for the square box with all the wires attached. On the back of that thing will be some cords. One will run away from the box over to the wall or some outlet. Follow it to the other end. Unplug it. Fixed.
  8. If you like the bands Matmos or Mechanics of Destruction check out his videos.
  9. Active Desktop just eats memory and makes the icons not show up properly. Also, having anything html on the desktop just to see the wallpaper kind of defeats the purpose of just changing the wallpaper. Once I get the jpeg part working, everything is finished. As it is now the program works, but only cycles the bmp's.

Cock and Balls, Cock and Balls. Hope that was GENITAL enough for you. Search the hak5 wiki show notes. Harrison showed Darren and John how to add Tiger to a PC, but he also shows you what your requirements are(like chip instruction set capabilities) or try the podzinger search on the main hak5 page. It will probably pull up the video for you with a serch for tiger. I think it was in episode 2 or three (Twenty-Three...never mind), but like I said, do a search on the podzinger for a quick video on it.
  11. It's a laptop? Not a standard pc. Make sure when reinstalling your uisng the discs it came with for the board and drivers and not using any drivers from Windows. Sounds like the hard drive is going. Live cds run from the CD-rom, so they don't even need the hard drive to run. When running from the hard drive it may have corrupted disk sectors or something. While looking into that memory test, see if you can find a copy of Disk Doctor: Im not one for Norton products, but it may help diagnose the problem. EDIT: Also, make sur ethe media your installing from isnt scratched or damaged.
  12. Several reasons. To encrypt my internet traffic as well as bypass content filtering. I also wanted a secure way to log in remotely to my home box using VNC while on the road without setting up a VPN. A vpn does not give me crontol of the pc, only shared access to specific shared folders. Also, I could use PC Anywhere, but why pay for them when you have Open SSH and PuTTY to do basically the same when adding VNC?
  13. Here is a packet captured for th forum logins. I have ommited important info, but the userid and password were found using a man in the middle attack. I am not sure if its because I am using vmware to capture the one machine, but I can see about 50% of the data flow unencrypted.: POST /forums/login.php HTTP/1.1 Accept: image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, application/x-shockwave-flash, */* Referer: http://www.hak5.org/forums/login.php?sid=x...xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Accept-Language: en-us Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) Host: www.hak5.org Content-Length: 60 Connection: Keep-Alive Cache-Control: no-cache Cookie: phpbb2mysql_sid=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx username=digip&password=xxxxxx&redirect=&login=Log+inHTTP/1.1 302 Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2007 03:00:32 GMT Server: Apache/2.0.54 (Unix) PHP/4.4.4 mod_ssl/2.0.54 OpenSSL/0.9.7e mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 DAV/2 SVN/1.3.2 X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.1 Set-Cookie: expires=Thu, 28-Feb-2008 03:00:32 GMT; path=/ Set-Cookie: phpbb2mysql_sid=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx; path=/ Location: http://www.hak5.org/forums/index.php?sid=x...xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Vary: Accept-Encoding Content-Encoding: gzip Content-Length: 20 Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=87 Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Type: text/html
  14. Well, I am at a loss. I can still see most of the traffic that I want to filter out and my firewall does not seem to see the ssh and is bypassing it. All data captured with Wireshark is secure and encrypted except HTTP post and GET methods, as well as email traffic and passwords(except when seleting SSL from the email program pointed to the server I am connecting to that supports secure connections). Also, I can see any css, xml and javascripts in the packets. Just the basic text of the pages seems to be encrypted. Here is my setup, so maybe I am not doing the setup correctly. -Installed OpenSSH v3.8.1p1-1 -Added my user groups and passwd files -Started the service -Telnet into shell with PuTTY: PuTTY set up: - Host Name 127.0.0.1 port 22 - Conenction/SSH/Tunneling : Source Port 7070 (Dynamic), Destination left blank -Setup Browser proxy pointed to 127.0.0.1:7070 using SOCKS, not HTTP or others... So, what are your settings or setup for SSH and what should I change or look into? EDIT: Forgot to add that I am using Wireshark 0.99.4 (SVN Rev 19757) with WinPcap 4.0beta2
  15. Another thing I noticed is it totally bypassed my Firewall(software). I see local traffic on 127.0.0.1 port 22 in the firewall logs, but it is not picking up any sites I visit in the log(which isnt a bad thing, but how do I know the firewall is protecting my browser and pc). My firewall software will filter ads and popups, but when using this method, the popups and ads get through. I even set the firewall to connect through the proxy, and they still seem to be getting in(possibly due to returned ssh data, it doesnt see what it normally looks for?) I would think that the request made from my end would show as garbled data like most of the captured packets on wireshark, but some of the things I am seeing are my passwords in plain text. Let me look into it this: and I will get back to you guys. It may be I just have something not set properly, but wireshark says its the connection from me(my internet ip) and the sites ip address. I see nothing going to 127.0.0.1 in wireshark(which is what I thougt would be there if it was passing the data locally)
  16. Ok. I have Open SSH installed, and I set up and configured everything for the service, as well as my programs I wanted to use with it. I have it working with my web browser, but one thing I was noticed, the browser connects to the internet using the socks 127.0.0.1 7070 as the proxy or Secure Tunnel. All the page data is encrypted, but I can see with Wireshark that it will still get the login and password when doing any http posts to a website as well as see all cookie data. Is there a way to make all traffic encrypted using Open SSH tunnelling, or should I go with something else?
  17. Tried VB Express, but I did not like it much. VB6 just seems so intuitive and was easy to learn, but then again, I am not a C+, perl, or php guy and I know nothing of the windows api internals. I usually set out to make something I need, and then make it in VB6. Thats how I learned. Like most people on here say "check google" I pretty much am self taught because of Google, and when I see someone ask a question, I sually try to do what they ask, not to help them or do it for the, but because, hey, I'd like to know how to do that as well. vbscript or VBS whatever you want to call it provides a bit of a challenge, because I can see in VB6 where you call in these libraries and api calls, but in VBS I think I would need to learn more about the CSCRIPT and WSCRIPT functions to execute the same thing without a compiled program. Maybe I learned everythign backwards? Most people start with Basic, then scripting, batch, etc, then move on to programming and compiling with things like c++, Visual Basic, perl, etc. I started with HTML and Visual Basic, so I am not familiar with any real hands on material and I think I kinda shot my self in the foot for starting with something after the basics, if you catch my meaning. There are 10 year olds running Linux at home and making all kinds of sh*t and I am still trying to figure out how the hell half of my computer works And, I work in the IT department where I work (10 years and counting) and I still only know what I have taught myself. Wish they had the internet at my school when I was in high school(graduated in '92). We had green screen all in one keyboard and monitors to learn basic. I never understood it then, and I think that is part of the problem I am having now.
  18. Check the adobe site first. What you would need to do is have them answer questions, take the answers, and post it into a pdf for them to download. EX: when you do your taxes online, they ask you a number of questions, and at the end of it all, they calculate all the data and "poof" they prompt you with a pdf of all the info gathered from you loaded into the pre-made pdf, but with all the fields updated from your input. I would imagine if your work needs hard copies in pdf format for archival purposes, this would be what they need as well as give the user their copy to print on their end. We do this where I work for all bank statements, so Open Office is an alternative, but it has yet to break the corporate side. I think there is a function in OpenOffice suite to convert them to PDF when saving, (Export to PDF) so this would work for you as well.
  19. Is there a way to port it to VBS? So someone without .net can run this with the basics installed by default in windows. I am seeing that this can probably be done in such a way that there is no need for a compiled app, but just pure scripting. There is a command for SPI_SETDESKWALLPAPER in vb6 as well, but you have to add some things to a module to get it to auto update the desktop and he could have just downloaded the one for "appaday" if he wanted an exe file. I made one in vb6 a while ago on my old 98 box, but I don't have the source code lying around. I'm not too good with vbs or wscript/cscript, but I am sure there is a way to do api calls in there to do all of this for us. It would probably come in handy too, since most windows pc's have cscript/wscript installed allready.
  20. DamnSmallLinux on a USB drive should do the trick.

    Spam?

Sned an email verification that make you go to a page and you have to enter your IP address to verify account, or something. Also, add captcha to all post pages. I know its a pain, but it at least slows down the spammers. Also, start making all ip addresses shown for posts. Not for admins or specific users, but for people with, say under 100 posts so you know they are part of the hak5 community and not some nutty spammer. Add a spam button to posts, so forum users can flag the post. This way, if say you set it to 10 flags, it locks the account and needs an admin to unlock it. Also, make it so only people with certain number of posts can flag the item so we don't get a bunch of n00b wiitards thinking its funny to lock someones account. I don't know, but I guess it upsets me more than most people. If only I could reach through that damn monitor and strangle the f*cker, i might get some satisfaction out of them.

    Spam?

Is it me, or is there a lot of one post forum spams lately? No, I don't need a home equity loan, penis enlargment, sex toys, drugs, stocks, watches, etc, etc... EX: http://www.hak5.org/forums/profile.php?mod...file&u=5626 One of many accounts only to send spam to us on the forums. Maybe the signup process should be changed with some captcha and email questions that need answering, like you have to take a hak5 quiz and get the answers in order to verify your account. What are your opinions?
  23. Has anyone noticed this in ZA7? That's 42.6875 megs or ram. not to mention the IO when atctive. It seems to eat a lot of memory. It only shows up when you have the Anti-Virus and Spyware enabled. Once you turn it off, it still runs until you restart Zone Alarm, and you cant kill the process unless you close zone alarm completely. Seems like a bug that it would not kill the process even after you disable them from the control panel, but once you refresh zone alarm, they will not reappear(unless you click yes to restart antivirus and anti spyware). I would have hoped for a smaller footprint since Zone Alarm itself already eats up a lot of cpu and memory. I think I'll switch back to 6.5 until they get something better set up...
