  1. You may also be able to get more if you're doing EVERYTHING for those 100 computers, such as everything in Gex's post. But if you're just hooking everything up and keeping it running don't expect a lot. For example, if you're constantly pentesting the network, maintaining a website, patching, upgrading, setting up domains, and the like, you can probably expect more than the base salary just for administration.
  2. Yeah I plan on doing it later when I relocate to another room directly underneath that room, but for now this will suffice. Plus, everyone else pretty much needs wireless in my house for their laptops, and for $14 how can you say no? :P
  3. Okay awesome, nice and low cost too! Thanks! I'll order it with a few school books ;)

    Anti-forensics

Unless you're managing C.I.A. computers you really shouldn't resort to such measures, unless, like Mr. Protocol said, you plan on replacing hard drives often.
  5. I really need a reply here soon, I'm probably gonna order a few things on amazon and I'd like to just bundle it all and ship it out if possible.
  6. Very nice, and once the antennas are mounted you can put food in that container!! :P
  7. Exactly This ^ If you run off doing this on peoples websites you will most likely get caught. I had a friend back in Freshmen Year that got caught just by running a portscan and arrested, imagine what doing this without having authorization could lead to.
  8. Yes, what digip said, remove the hard drive. I know for a fact that those people will sometimes, instead of fixing your computer, just go through and look through personal files for private information. It sure is a scary world we live in now, that's why I learned as much as I could about hardware and diagnostics, fix it myself! :)

I didn't think the Pineapple worked that way, at least not by default (I don't have one yet) I thought you would just offload some html files to respond to requests such as facebook.com. Don't take my word for it as I don't own one.. yet.
  10. Yes I considered that but I'd like something with more power, mounting the router I have at the highest spot in the house doesn't get too much distance, 3 rooms over I get 2 bars, and there isn't an option to run a cable into here. Keep in mind this is a gaming PC I am on so I need the lowest latency possible. The router has to be in the office room as that is where my servers run and I don't have the budget to go off and buy 10 cards for them to run wireless. Is there no such card that even exists?
  11. That's great and all, however I was planning on using this for a router running Smoothwall or Untangle, and I'll assume it wont work as an AP in that, so does anyone have suggestions for one that would work? Thanks!
  12. Still waiting on the reply to misfits question, I thought I heard before that the ALFA couldn't be set as an AP.
  13. Awesome, I'll keep my eyes peeled. I made sure to sign up for it earlier this morning so we'll see where that goes.

    Help Me Please

This sure is an odd problem, I can't see how misconfiguration could effect the overall performance of the machine. Yet I also doubt the router itself could be infected, at least I've never heard of anything like that, though it could be an MBR virus. If you do run a Cable modem into a router or firewall/router, perhaps try one machine plugged directly into the modem, while eliminating the router from the equation, if it is a possibility. Another thing you could do is boot up a LiveCD of Ubuntu, Mint, Backtrack, or whatever you want, really. If the problem occurs during a linux live boot, I would stop worrying about it, make them get off their asses and come out to replace everything. Just be sure if you do hardline into the cable modem that you do not leave anything important on the system as you'll pretty much be flying blind as far as firewalls go. If the problem doesn't occur here follow the basic principle that many of us in the hardware world use for troubleshooting, and start adding back the pieces until the problem reoccurs, so that you can isolate it if it's able to be isolated. Hope this helps somewhat. ;)

    Help Me Please

I didn't see it above so I'll post it here, do the symptoms stay even after disconnection and reboot?
  16. Very nice presentation, you caught my interest with the InfoSec Mentors website, do you know much about it, I'm really tempted to sign up for it. Seriously though, that presentation was awesome, I made some friends read it too :P Also I'm not sure if this is a typo or not, but on your website the "Breaking in Data" hyperlink has two N's in it.
  17. Really? I thought it couldn't and that's why the Homemade WiFi router episode was postponed, or was that a different adapter?
  18. Did Darren ever do that video a long time ago, how he made the router with the Mini-ITX board, but with the wireless portion of it? I don't remember seeing that one ever. I think I'd rather kill two birds with one stone, I currently only have one NIC on the box, so if I can get a way to broadcast wirelessly, that would be a better route than getting a hardlined NIC AND an access point, like I said in the above edit, the range doesn't have to be GREAT, just average, or preferably a bit above average. ;)
  19. Dang, that looks pretty nice! Very low profile... at least when it's closed!
  20. As the title says, very soon here I'm going to be turning an older computer I have into a router, but I need a decent wireless card with a good range that can be used as an access point. Does anyone have some they would like to recommend? I've been digging around but very few actually release the estimated ranges. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! B) EDIT: I should add, this is a home project just to replace my crappy netgear with a horrible firewall, so the budget is low. I had plans of installing Untangle or a few other distributions to test them out, I basically need something with about the same range, if not better broadcasting as my Netgear WNR-1000V2 had, although I suppose a a Bridge could be an option down the road.
  21. One thing to keep in mind, is that your monitor resolution (i.e 1920x1080) will directly relate to the requirements you need for a video card and CPU. For example, if you're using a low resolution such as 1024x768, you wont need a very powerful video card at all, as it's not pushing out a ton of pixels and stressing it. However, a downside to running a lower resolution is the CPU does need to have a bit more horsepower. 1024x768: Older GeForce 200 series can be picked up on the cheap and work fine 1366x768: GTX 550Ti(460)/Radeon 6870 is a good choice in this range 1680x1050: GTX 560/560Ti starts to come into play 1920x1080: GTX 570 (or the GTX 580)/Radeon 6950/6970. Anything Above: Need to start running SLI, be it single PCB (GTX590 or Radeon 6990) or separate (2x:GTX 580) Hope I helped!
  22. I filled it out, nice well thought out survey! Also your website looks kickass, just saying. :P
  23. As with many jobs I'm pretty sure the pay starts off low until you prove yourself and move up the ranks, I know at a company where I know the systems administrator they just hired an I.T. Director that just got a Masters in Network Security and they're starting her off at $200,000 a year. Although it is a very high ranking job it just goes to show that if you follow what you love everything will work out in the end. Better to be out a bit of money and not hate every day of your work life, than do something you hate and have a loaded bank account. That's just my opinion though. :D
  24. So true, the world is falling apart pretty fast, it'll probably go online or dissolve entirely what with the budget issues.
