  1. :) No worries, glad to share what I know! :) To feed the MK4 from a battery pack (or a USB port), you'll need to avail yourself of a USB to Type M connector (I bought some off of Amazon and posted a link in another thread some weeks back) If you just search Amazon for USB to type M you'll find it, and it works great. We're trying to find enough power in a single battery pack to be able to power the MK4 (via the USB to Type M barrel), and then be able to plug in any USB dongle into the MK4's USB port, or even a USB hub into the MK4 to host multiple USB devices (e.g. 3g dongle and a USB stick). The only way to pull that off is going to be the Dual USB to Single USB power, hence the battery pack with dual USB outputs. I know Darren is putting something together for the hakshop along these lines, but I just got antsy because I really don't want to have to power it off the 12v wall wart to use USB drives. He may have some more information on what he's researched as well. I'll be back with my results in this thread, good luck!
  2. petertfm: Correct. I believe it will have more than enough juice to do the trick (at least that's what I'm hoping!). NotTheFed: I saw that one there too, but I noted the actual seller name and spooked...."The Closeout Masters" just doesn't sound like a good place to buy an expensive battery, but it's probably just fine. :) The battery I bought is here: 8400 mAh Dual USB Output, and it was only $55. This is the cable I bought as I already have a USB to Type M: Dual Male USB to Single Female USB cable - $2.99/ea
  3. That's correct, the New Trent 11k mAh has got huge capacity, but only a single 5v USB output, same as a single USB output. It's fine to run a MK4 barebones, but not enough to run it with the additional cruzer fit USB stick. The battery I'm looking at has dual USB outputs, so with the appropriate cable, it'll be able to provide up to 10v of output, more than enough to run the MK4 and whatever USB stick you could throw at it.
  4. ahaha! Ya beat me to it. :) Can't wait to give this one a try! Some of you guys are really blowin' it up out here with the add-ons, brilliant stuff, thanks all! Super fired up for the official release of the modules-enabled firmware!!
  5. The New Trent 11k won't do the trick with a USB drive dangling off the MK4 (at least not one of the Cruzer Fit's), I already tried it. I've just ordered a Dual USB output 8400mAh battery along with a dual-to-single USB cable. Should be here in a few days, I'll try it out and weigh back in with the results.
  6. I want to follow up on the USB SanDisk Cruzer Fit issue. I've just confirmed that the 4GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit also does NOT work when providing power to the MK4 via USB. I get the same errors as I did with the 8GB Fit (documented earlier in this thread). Again, just like the 8GB Fit, powering up the MK4 via 12v, the 4GB works fine....but it won't work when the MK4 is powered via USB. I'll likely try Telot's suggestion to get one of those other USB devices until Darren and HakShop come out with the battery pack with dual USB power and a USB hub. (hint, hint...hoping those kits come to market...SOON...:) )
  7. Barry nailed it, and of course wins all of the day's innernetz, nicely done. :) It's a power issue. Using a single USB port (USB to Type M barrel) for powering the MK4, and with nothing but the 8GB Cruzer Fit (no USB hub) plugged into the MK4's USB port, the MK4 will NOT recognize the 8GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit correctly. Guaranteed. I've received my second order of them (2 this time), and it is the same issue every time...fails to read/properly recognize...throws the same batch of errors as my dmesg out above shows. I then powered up the MK4 with the 12v wall wart and it worked fine. I was then able to issue the mkswap command, and it also worked fine. Rebooted the device (keeping the 12v power), and it picked everything up as it should have, the Resources page in the GUI now shows the 1.6GB of swap space properly initialized and mounted, the 5.5GB of extra space mounted as well. I then tried this all again on the USB power, and it failed in exactly the same fashion. Tried again back on 12v, works perfectly. However, as indicated above, the older 8GB Patriot stick worked fine, so it's NOT an issue of size, but one of power consumption, and that is going to vary from model to model. As Darren indicated, the 4GB has been tested, and that must be the one to use with regard to the SanDisk Cruzer Fit if you intend to power the MK4 from the USB port, the larger Cruzer Fit (8GB and 16GB) apparently require more power. That said, I am going to try to turn one of these "USB to Type M" cables into a "2 USB to Type M" cable, similar to what Telot did with the generic USB cable, and then I'll re-try this again to see if it supplies enough power to do the 8GB Fit. Oh, I can imagine, but I have to put a magazine over my lap...know what I mean?!? ;) I am all OVER that option, thanks Darren!! As with every other device in the HakShop (with the exception of I will now refer to as the "8GB Fit Debacle"...lesson learned...;) ), I'll be patronizing the HakShop for a few of those kits on release day! :) Thanks again guys for all the help, hopefully documenting my pain here will help someone else avoid it. Buy the 4GB Fit from the HakShop!! :) eta: clarity
  8. Good call, I'll try that when I get home from work tonight. Was indeed powering it from USB. Weird though...following the same instructions, the old 8GB Patriot USB stick worked fine. I'll try about anything at this point, since the Cruzer Fit works in every other situation but the MK4. Your power suggestion is the only possible suggestion that makes sense. I've got 2 more of the SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8GB's on the way too, so I'll also give the new one a try and weigh in with the results on that as well. Thanks again for the suggestion! <placeholder for results> ;)
  9. While awaiting my new 8GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit to arrive (because my current one is apparently !#$!$@!$'d), I got a package from an eBay purchase! I can confirm that the board I linked to below works flawlessly, AND better than the Alfa rig, because it supplies power to the board as well as serial connectivity! w00t!! I took a chance, and for $3.99/free shipping, thought what the hell? It works GREAT! it's 3.3v or 5v, comes with a spiffy 4-wire connector wire. The little board it comes with has 5 pins: 5v, 3.3v, Tx, Rx, Gnd Plugged into my Win7 box, it found drivers and installed as: Prolific USB to Serial Com Port Connected the 4 wires to my pineapple , and it powered up!! Fired up PuTTY and connected right up, right into console! With the performance of this little guy, I'd say F**K $30 for that Alfa-branded one, not to mention the Alfa one has to be either plugged into a 9-pin serial, or you have to have a 9-pin serial to USB cable in addition to the Alfa serial board, AND you also have to additionally supply power to the board. (I was gifted one of the Alfa serial connectors and can confirm it works as well, but not without the gyrations mentioned above.) This little guy does it all for a nice price. I have no connection to this eBay guy other than to share my experience, and to hope it helps someone here looking for a great quality USB to Serial for this project. I couldn't be happier for the money, and the shipping was reasonably quick (he shipped the next day), but takes a bit in transit due to it being overseas. eta: I just placed an order for a 2nd one...never hurts to have a spare! :) PL2303HX USB to TTL - $3.99 - free shipping
  10. Thanks again for your help Barry! Alright, for kicks I took an older 8GB full-length USB stick and followed the directions. Works fine. So it's got to be something with this SanDisk Fit 8GB device. It works fine in every other device though. Ubuntu sees it, mounts the parts, uses the file system, etc. Same on Windows when I format it NTFS or FAT32. For obvious reasons I don't want to use this giant damn USB stick, so I guess I'll have to order another Fit, but I'm very skeptical about this, and left wondering if I"m going to get the same problem with the SanDisk Fit across the board. Anyone have any ideas why this USB drive would work everywhere else BUT the MK4?
  11. Thanks for the quick response Barry, I learn something new and useful every time I post, thanks! :) :) No hub, just the SanDisk Fit straight into the USB port. Alright, well clearly there's a problem and that would explain why my troubles are, but exactly what it is I don't know. Here's the relevant part of my dmesg results: [ 192.730000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 2 using ar71xx-ehci [ 193.430000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 194.580000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 194.810000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 3 using ar71xx-ehci [ 195.400000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 196.830000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 197.060000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 4 using ar71xx-ehci [ 198.250000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 199.580000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 199.810000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 5 using ar71xx-ehci [ 200.810000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 201.260000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 201.370000] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 203.170000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 6 using ar71xx-ehci [ 204.310000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 204.960000] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 206.200000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 7 using ar71xx-ehci [ 207.280000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 208.400000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 208.630000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 8 using ar71xx-ehci [ 209.940000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 211.150000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 211.380000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 9 using ar71xx-ehci [ 212.890000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 214.430000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 214.660000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 10 using ar71xx-ehci [ 215.260000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 216.480000] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/8, error -71 [ 216.590000] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 246.320000] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 11 using ar71xx-ehci [ 246.480000] scsi0 : usb-storage 1-1:1.0 [ 247.480000] scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access SanDisk Firebird 1.06 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 [ 247.480000] sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0 [ 247.500000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 131072 512-byte logical blocks: (67.1 MB/64.0 MiB) [ 247.500000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off [ 247.510000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00 [ 247.510000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 247.520000] sd 0:0:0:0: ioctl_internal_command return code = 8070000 [ 247.520000] : Sense Key : 0x4 [current] [ 247.530000] : ASC=0x0 ASCQ=0x0 [ 247.530000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 247.540000] sda: unknown partition table [ 247.550000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 247.550000] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk It shows up and mounts fine in Ubuntu, both partitions mount, etc. Any ideas? While I'm awaiting a reply I'm going to try to delete/recreate the partitions again (3rd time)...I know, that's the definition of insanity, but I don't know what else to try! :) Thanks again! eta: image of the drive in Ubuntu Disk Utility:
  12. Gawd I feel like such a !@#$%!@#$% n00b sometimes. - 8GB Sandisk Fit - Followed the instructions to the letter, using Ubuntu to create the partitions just as Darren shows, though mine has a 6GB "main" and a 2GB "swap" instead of 3GB/1GB. I booted the MK4, let it come up fully. Start GUI and follow instructions to make my USB page setting the same as shown (I had to change a few 0's to 1's). Updated Fstab with the button, and it saved it (I know this because I refreshed the page, and it held through a subsequent reboot) Fired up PuTTY and got into console, issued the following from the prompt: mkswap /dev/sda2 I get: /dev/sda2: No such file or directory I confirm that in the GUI, it shows in USB: Bus 001 Device 001: ID xxxx:xxxx Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 005: ID xxxx: xxxx SanDisk Corp. Cruzer The USB LED is lit up on the MK4 (solid) The orange light on the SanDisk has been flashing rapidly now for about 50 minutes, no sign of stopping I have shut down the MK4, put the USB back in the ubuntu machine, deleted/recreated partitions, retried it in the MK4, same results. The USB drive is fine and Ubuntu sees it fine and mounts both partitions, EXT4 style. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I can't get this thing to work in the MK4 to save my life. Thanks gang.
  13. Whistle Master's blowin' it UP out here with the sweet mods, thanks man, nice work! ;)
  14. Nice work WM!! Damn Ive been soooo busy at work lately, I cant wait to get some time on my MK4 again!! The forum community has been very busy lately too, LOTS of really sweet contributions and info these past few weeks! Darren, seb, robin and crew have really hit the mark on all points with this platform and the community contribution factor on the MK4 is gonna be off the charts!l
  15. Understood. When on AC power, does it run all the options for a good llength of time? When on USB power, can you get to the device at all, or just after you start snapping on options? Can you get it to run on USB with just Karma? Have you tried powering it on a different machine's USB? Maybe there's an issue with the power on that USB port.
  16. Maybe Im overlooking something, but im wondering why OP feels this is a power issue? What happens when you power it from the ac adapter? Same results? I too have run my MK3 for a long time on USB power. Telot has a good DIY for a few different power setups, and Ive posted the link in a.few threads to buy one on Amazon that works great. Aside from using ac, also, have you tried turning everything off, and firing up the services on.the MK3 one at a time, checking.results along the way? Also, have you tried reflashing the device?
  17. LULZ!! I remember my.first anniversary....the good old days....sex....hahah!! :(
  18. Or a styrofoam packing "peanut", flattened down...ask me how I know. ;)
  19. +1 I.can also.confirm this one works perfectly.
  20. Thanks for the well wishes Telot, and congrats on your upcoming 1 year...I had an awesome night here! So, I started with the simplest explanation first: settings, and of course, Occam's Razor wins again...and so does seb. :) Indeed, it was forcing it to SCP in WinSCP via the pulldown menu that did the trick! w00tz! (note to others, WinSCP does throw a few goofy "group" errors after connecting, but just "OK" past them to get the interface, which is really nice BTW) Thanks again for the assist fellas, and I guess I'll be the first outside the devteam to confirm here and now that the flashing method outlined in another thread works perfectly! It's really REALLY nice that we don't have to use the TTY serial to apply updates (the new method is SOOO much cleaner than the MK3!), but it's also really nice to know that if for whatever reason the code bricks, that having the cable, the system firmware, and the latest MK4 updates at hand, we can bring 'em back from the grave fairly easily. For the record, the setup I used was: - TrendNET TU-S9 USB to Serial(9 pin) - I had this around for many other applications I need it for - Alfa Serial(9pin) to TTL - Was gifted this board/cable for helpin' a brother out - Serial F/F gender changer - bought this via Amazon to connect the two together for a few bucks aahahah! I know...but it's what I had to work with. It actually made a really nice, stable piece of gear, but a nice clean USB to TTL cable would be best. :) It'll be interesting to see what Darren determines is best and puts in the hakshop. Thanks again for all the help guys.
  21. I love you guys soooo much!!! :) :) Taking my wife out for our wedding anniversary dinner shortly, so I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to try all your fine suggestions tonight (if I'm lucky, I won't have time until tomorrow...know what i mean? ;) ;) ;) ) I'll definitely be back to weigh in with the results though, as soon as I'm not "anniversarying", thanks again for all the quick responses fellas!
  22. Hopefully this is an easy one. I've got 2 hornet-ub's with OpenWRT already loaded on them. Trying to put the "upgrade.bin" file on them to upgrade them to an MK4. I'm connected with a serial cable and an eth cable in PoE/LAN. I've connected to the serial port with PuTTY, set the password, and started dropbear per the instructions in another thread. I'm on Win7, so I grabbed WinSCP (both .exe and .com). I put winscp.com and the upgrade.bin in the same directory. I open a command prompt, go to the "scp" directory, and run "winscp 192.168.2.1" It connects, and prompts me for a username, which I respond "root" It prompts me for a password, which I provide the one I created: "pineapplesareyummy" It then indicates "Authenticated" The next thing that happens is I get: "Connection has been unexpectedly closed. Server sent command exit status 127. Cannnot initialize SFTP protocol. Is the host running a SFTP server?" and I'm stuck. I've followed the steps outlined in the flashing thread to a "T" (at least the relevant parts...I didn't need to put OpenWRT on these as it's already there, so I started from that point Darren? seb? Anyone? I don't see where I'm supposed to turn on a SFTP server on the board, but it appears that scp is looking for that. I also ran the GUI version of Winscp, and told it to "allow fallback to scp" (it defaults to SFTP), and I get the same results. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks guys!
  23. RJ45 is RJ45. Cat6 is fully backward compatible with cat5e
  24. That is very cool, definitely looking forward to seeing your results!
