  1. I <3 SmartFTP, but it seems that I get WAY better transfer speeds using WS or Filezilla. I haven't tested this since my reformat.
  2. Dude, Go with the cheap(er) shipping. Theres no sense in paying more for the shipping than the actual product. You might want to call Jinx (May I suggest Skype or Gizmo for cheap international calling) if they don't specify shipping times on their website. And I didn't forgo the Seamonster insurance because I don't believe in them. It's just that, well, you should see the premiums on the Yeti insurance! I'll be lucky if we break even!
  3. Got the latest chipset drivers? Also, try doing this: Right-click "My Computer" ( Not my my computer, your my computer ;) ) and click Manage Expand Event Viewer, then Application Right-click Application and click View > Filter Uncheck everything but Error and click OK Read the error reports, often times they contain a link to more information on the MS KB which can help you fix your problem or at least lead you in the right direction. Hope that helps, Darren
  4. It's creative commons so I can't stop redistribution. It's just that every trackable download we get is another verified viewer to potential advertisers which means we can better market the show. Short answer: More verified viewers, better chance of getting good advertisers, more chance of getting money, get new equipment and make show better (and hopefully one day realize the dream of doing it live weekly).
  5. Our host can handle the load. We're unable to get hard numbers from bit-torrent. This way we have a good idea of our viewership.
  6. We're gathering better statistics this episode. It's an experiment. The torrents will be back next ep. Thanks for understanding.
  7. sounds good. i could care less about pausing or skipping, just to have the program run in the background and put the files in a configurable directory would be really nice. I'm a little confused about the hack you mention. Can you not use another firefox window while this app is running?
  8. We've got a new moderator, VaKo, who I hope will be helping out in the war on spam.
  9. I feel your pain moonlit. I'm working on ep10 on a borked box. Ahh, cannot wait to reformat on the 6th! Been putting it off for... Um... 10 months.
  10. Sweet! I remember I started using VLC because it could play a video in a secondary monitor in full screen, i believe due to software rendering. good stuff. VLC is like VI, I'm surprised it's not self aware by now.
  11. this is bugging me as much as you guys, trust me. my inbox is full of this question. we're really going crazy right now getting ep10 out but i promise the show notes will return in a much better way after that release. it's top priority, right up there with the site redesign and dvd.
  12. have you tried opening VLC on monitor 3, then holding CTRL while clicking the X button to close the window? That sometimes tells windows to remember that location when opening that program. Aside from that I think if you look around the VLC forums and wiki you should be able to find a paramater. Good luck and let us know when you find. D
  13. Mmm, sleemans. Finished off a two-four of that last night.
  14. thanks for the link. good luck with the exam!
  15. I hate the new ATI Catalyst control panel that requires the .net framework. It runs so slow.
  16. It works well, no complaints here. It's not as much of a memory hog as skype.
  17. Where is the article? I really want to do this. If you need any Hak.5 art let me know. D
  18. It was only a matter of time before they caught on. I'm just glad we didnt get a angry lawyers on our butts. Pandora, if your reading, I <3 U.
  19. We're bummin around Toronto, Ontario this week. If your in town and wanna knock back a few brewskis send me an email. darren@hak5.org D
  20. We're really excited about it. I spoke to the editor before it came out and they really like our stuff :). In true slashdot style, FTA: Hak.5 "An appealing cast of übergeeks demonstrates nifty 'sploits, like building a laser audio transmitter for an iPod and hacking a CVS digital camera. No pandering to the masses here; each month's installment is packed with code examples and parts lists - plus a shot of 1337 humor. Check out the reviews of iTunes, FireAnt, and Democracy in episode eight, and don't miss the pitches for the latest innovations from "microshaft"" I advise everyone go out and grab a copy. They have a great list of top-notch vidcasts to check out.
  21. also keep in mind that if your going to capture a game to put in a video, running at 800x600 will look fine.

thanks for the suggestion. i've heard about how crazy hackable these things are and we'll likely get to hacking them on the show. i think it was frank from techphile that told me about em. good stuff.
  23. svideo out on video card to svideo in on mini-dv camera, press record button. ;)
  24. Now when you say you setup the desktop as an AP are you saying using special AP software that does infrastructure mode or do you have them both in adhoc mode?
