  1. Good news all! We now have a new and more stable IRC server at irc.hak5.org. We welcome everyone to join us in #hak5. We’ll be slowly making the transition over the week. Thanks go to Oliver Wine for making that happen smoothly. And in other awesome news, we’re currently beta-testing a new Hak.5 game server — sponsored by EVOLANS.com. We’re currently testing Counter-Strike: Source. You can join us on the server at game.hak5.org (password is hak5). Kick us an email or leave a comment about your experience, we want to get everything worked out before episode 10 release on May 5th. Thanks to everyone that has been so supportive bringing these new Hak5 services online. –Darren (yes that was just a repost from the homepage)
  2. lol, we referenced the gamecube mod in the questions segment on ep9, just a little throwback to anyone thats been with us from day1.
  3. Yep, thats exactly where we shot parts of "The Token". From that pic to the right one block is the building we used in the first part. We kinda just stumbled across the stairs and decided the it would be even better with a rocky parody in the middle too. It's always fun when you go off the shot-list.
  4. ...then u wake up.. Um, no serious. Watch episode 1. Ok, dont actually watch it, it's really really bad, but just see the first segment.
  5. Williamsburg actually, but Richmond is only a hop skip and jump away.
  6. a link has been floating around the hak5 irc channel
  7. wish i could get work to pay for some cards like those... "Yeah, I need them for better frames in remote desktop"
  8. remember that streaming video segment we did in ep6? get a friendly canadian with a spare box and a tv tuner card. :)
  9. And to be honest if your time is worth more than your money the x-arcade route isnt a bad option.
  10. NIN canceled at the last minute, but we will be touring with a perfect circle. the ibook sacrafice has been switched for a c64 and lots of bottle rockets experiment. yes, we'd love to come to AU. no, we're currently broke. if we ever make mad loot we'll be there in a heart beat.
  11. yes yes, it's been on the list of things to research for a great hak5 segment. poster of your city for under $15.. Mmmm. Anyone want to lend a hand on this hack for some mad props?
  12. Ooo. $8.50 for the player, $30 for a 1GB card. That's under $40 for a 1gb player and if you've got a SD card reader in your PC... Bliss. No ipod killer but I know for that price I wouldnt mind one in the car for when I forget my ipod (I've always got a SD card in my cellphone)
  13. I take Vako's side on this issue. I'll never spend more than $200 on a video card. After that it's just paying for the name. And remember, today's $400 card is tomorrows $200 card. :) this coming from the guy running an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro hacked up to 9700
  14. Did I miss something? Was this from a fark photoshopping thing or something?
  15. Shooting the broken parody, or more specifically the Rocky part in the middle. It was just a cool "Hey look, stairs! Lets totally get off the shot list for a bit" moment.
  16. First off, it's great to see viewers from Torrent. That was quick, it just launched on the 6th. Welcome Canadians (and everyone else bit-torrenting torrent ;) ) There is a mouse plugged in, just incase things get borked but for the most part it's not needed. The system currently boots windows XP straight into MAME32 which has the controls mapped with proper menu support. It works great right out of the box. We'll get flamed for not using KnoppMAME (I think thats the name of the distro) so I'll throw that suggestion out there too if you want to do it with linux. In episode 5 I believe Wess goes into more detail about the hardware and software of the unit. I know of a few people that have gotten interested in the do-it-yourself arcade project from the show, mostly on the arcadecontrols.com forums. Darren
  17. Just took a look at the image. Normally I'd freak out about it not being 300 DPI for your print size, but in this specific case I think the pixelation will actually add some retro flavor to it and it should look great at a distance. The hak5 poster was done in photoshop at 3'x5' at 300dpi then saved as a PDF which the copy shops like. Vector is your friend when blowing up images like that. I've always wanted to find some way to save the google maps satelite images for my city to one huge 3'x5' 300dpi image to have printed but that would require google api hacking that I unfortunately dont have time for :(
  18. Fedex Kinkos plotted it. $0.75 / sq. ft. for black and white (our old poster) or $3 / sq. ft. for color (our new poster)... It gets expensive doing full color that size but I think it was worth it for the set. Cafepress will also do 'em, but not as big and for way too much money.
  19. There is some very interesting discussion going on here so I'll break from my vacation for a few minutes to add my 2 cents. I apologize in advance if I don't cover all of the issues raised here. First of all, on the idea of a common studio space for vidcasters I have to say being one and knowing lots of them this has been a dream we have all had for a long time. I can't count how many times this topic has come up in discussion with other vidcasters. While I think it's a great idea and fully support it there are a few minor details that have kept it from coming to reality. This is not to say that I don't want it to happen so don't read it like that. But firstly there is the question of location. There are many shows that I believe could benefit from such a studio, however we are so spread out geographically that it seems infeasible. There seem to be a few IPTV hubs right now, first of which being Toronto which consistantly brings us great shows like CommandN, LabRats, and Openalpha. Then there is the west coast with vid/podcast networks like TWIT and Revision3. Then there's us, Hak.5 in Virginia, StepONE in Florida, AlmostAGeek in Hawaii, etc, etc. When we decided to convert part of our apartment into a studio it was because there were no other vidcasters in our area and building and breaking down the set every shoot day was getting tiresome. I am also a firm believer that a good vidcast set can be built out of a spare room with little money. Total cost of the Hak.5 set is probably in the range of a few hundred dollars. Secondly shows like CommandN don't really have a set. They shoot on the streets of Toronto or other interesting places and I think that adds a lot to the show. Openalpha is shot out of Jenn Cutter's bedroom with a nice backdrop, some lights, and a really kick ass camera. So in the present, while I believe the major tech IPTV shows that have pioneered this landscape are already doing a great job on their own and while we could benefit from a shared studio things like geography and monitary and logistical issues come into play. As for vidcasts yet to be seen I think one of the best things to do is take advantage of your local colleges resources. In film school at VCU you could schedule time using the green screens, or even borrow cameras and audio gear. Ok, I'm getting a little long winded here and I want to touch on the 'quitting mainstream television for 5 months' thing because it's a fantastic experiment which I've been doing as well for the last year, but I have to run this second so I'll get back to this post later. Sorry to cut it like that, looking forward to more insight on this thread. Darren
