  1. Fine Im wrong, I didn't think about other OSs Yes DRM is a very bad thing. I <3 Pandora Yes I have heard of viruses taking your files hostage and trying to get you to buy them back, Ill try find a link somewere tomorrow.
  2. What about DRM and stopping you from doing stuff?
  3. I had something like this when I overclocked the computer but Im guessing that isn't it. Although to check if it's a hardware problem booting of a live CD could be useful.
  4. I had a similar bollocking when I joined thinking that hacking was all black hat stuff and asked for people to help hack my school. Now I've reformed :) and no longer try to hack my school, you guys give some very good points as to why you shouldn't hack your school network, thanks for saving me before I got caught :D
  5. Whats wrong with blue-ray? It has more storage capacity than HD-DVD, that has to be good.
  6. While I was walking home I was thinking about viruses...Windows is the biggest virus there is... Its modular (it can get virus add ons) The ability to modify other programs usually to the determent of the computer system. A computer virus is a self-replicating program containing code that explicitly copies itself and can infect other programs by modifying them or their environment such that a call to an infected program implies a call to a (possibly evolved) copy of the virus. Sounds like windows. I'm not really windows bashing it was just something I thought about :)
  7. Damn that makes my horny...not you VaKo, the setup.

  9. As an answer to why get PCIe, now they are making all the new cards in PCIe, PCIe cards don't give any performance benifits over AGP. But you would expect dated technology to be cheaper(AGP) but its achually more expensive to buy a AGP card than a PCIe (Might be cheaper on ebay or whatever? But first hand in NZ its about another $50 more for the equivilant AGP card)
  10. Me too, damn I hate all this bubble wrapping of everything(people should just be able to use their common sence), Im not so keen on censorship either. But if there were no adverts on TV it would one problem solved. Also if people stopped watching TV that would be lots of problems solved.
  11. Portable Firefox is pwnage, but for some reason unbeknown to me it take ages to start up 1 minute plus, but after that it runs fine. So now I mainly use opera or Firefox on the computer(whichever is handy) and Portable Firefox if I want to save some bookmarks.
  12. The raidmax case Im looking at doesnt have any lights. But, I found a nice PSU in Aussie and will get it shiped over the ditch. Antec Neo HE (http://www.antec.com/us/pro_p_NeoHE.html) Neo HE 500 (http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=28500) 500w Ohh and that HDD thing was a miscalculation its achualy $150, same with the RAM it is $170 :) I cant get a 7300GT 256MB DDR3 RAM in NZ but I can get a 7600GS 256MB DDR3 in NZ for just a little bit more.
  13. Can I post this here? What's with consoles! I hate the little thumb sticks, you can never get head shots and whats going to happen when Xbox 360 players can play with PC players on Vista? 360 is going to get pwned(arn't they)? Consoles only have a few functions and arn't as flexiable as computers. I must admit they are getting better, I heard that you will be able to get mouse/keyboard for PS3 and also Linux. Also isnt building computers so much more fun than just plugging a console (I helped Dad build ours). BTW thw Wii does look ok with its batton thingy. This is just my personal view. </rant> PS. Admins probably don't want this turned into a flame war so just keep this quiet.
  14. We expected as much :D I live in New Zealand and before this year i only used computers for gaming really. Got into Purepwnage start of 2006, got Hak5 link off purepwnage and now im teh 1337 hax0r... Ill just keep dreaming lol :)
  15. AM2, Its newer, just as cheap for a new board, supports DDR2 RAM, it's also rumored that AM2 mobos will be able to use AM3 CPUs when they come out(A while away still I think). Did I miss anything?

Its not as fast but I can upgrade it when I have some more money...I still have to buy games to play on it too anyway lol, and some T-Shirts from www.jinx.com
  17. Just did some looking at PSUs and all the different voltage rails and the amps stuff confuses me :? I know that I need about 20A+ but to get that 24A would 8A over triple 12V rails be the same? I also hear that dual rails have some compadiablilty issues, is this true? What about the 3.3V and 5V rails, that do I need to look for there? Can anyone recommend me some PSUs? Also Ive decided to go for a $120 motherboard so i get 4 SATA connecters, and $80*2=$140 for the RAM and go for the cheapest RAM that I could find that has a brand name that Ive heard of...GeIL, to avoid incompadiablility issues. edit: Yea I am going for option A edit...again: dont worry about the rails thing I understand that now. I still need recommendations though
  18. Ahh right...*goes searching www.pricespy.co.nz* 160/250GB samsung, that's a nice speedy HDD, which one? http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage.html...74&chart=49
  19. Nope not really. Even if I did work extra hours from 1800-0030 last nite :)Yep Cooper Im going to buy a DVD writer as soon as Ive brought the computer. The advice about the PSU was great, I had a look and yes there are some reasonable PSUs going at quite good prices, BTW I dont think we have any Sharkoon Rebels in NZ :( they look cool though. As for HDDs Im going for a WD 160GB HDD for $90 which works out to be quite good value per GB and I have also seen people recommending it quite a bit. renegadecanuck I did read somewere (maybe anandtech) that playing oblivion with a dual core increases performance somewhat.
  20. Yes that does make sense but with HDDs being so cheap wouldn't it be best to go for a bigger one and not need to buy a new one for a server? My other plan was to buy a cheap 2nd hand 40GB HDD but that costs $50! Thats about >100c per GB as apposed to <50c a GB for the big HDDs?
  21. OPTION A $120-Athlon 64 3000+ $100-AM2 mobo $120-2*512 of the cheapest ram $230-7600GT $175-320GB HDD $070-case and PSU off trademe $815=total option A OPTION B $170-Intel Pentium D 805 2.6GHz Dual Core(upgrade to conroe later and buy a HSF) $250-LGA755 mobo(a good one for that $$) $230-2*512=1GB Corsair Value Select Dual Channel memory kit $230-7600GT(until 8600GT comes out) $175-320GB HDD $150-PSU $050-case $1255=total option B note-prices in NZ dollars Wrong with my current rig you ask? Well first, it isnt mine its Dad's and... my Dad has become a control freak and I now have a limited account. I also want my own rig because I want to be able to play games, code, ect all holidays(NZ holidays have prety much started) instead of just afternoons(not allowed on in morning) and then I can take it to mates houses and play with him. -Option A would be until halfway through next year when I would build something about the price of option B. Then I could turn it into a linux box, file server or a media center(then sell to Dad maybe because he just burns DVDs at the moment. expected gaming life 1 year. -Option B would be upgraded until its not economical to upgrade when it to would become a linux box or server expected gaming life, 2-3 years(with upgrades). I also intend to buy a cheap laptop sometime in the first half to next year and just use it for Linux. I have $400 now and when exams are finished in two weeks I can earn $100 a week. edit: Please post any other ideas and why you voted for each option.
  22. Kool thanks I have been told before that when I read words I see the shapes but not the letters. Therefore since I read a lot I can tell when a word is spelt wrong easly, but I wont know how to spell it. Although you should really make an effort to spell things right and use proper english grammar ect. especially if you are pissing off an admin by not spelling things correctly.
  23. That makes sense, but Im running my torrents off the file server not the desktop machine. Could it be that the firewall box which runs smoothwall won't allow many concurrent connections?
