  1. If you like hardware, learn C.
  2. http://www.cygwin.com/ Next...
  3. I can't really vote either way. I found their earlier stuff to be better, but I would say that was before I learnt alot of the stuff they now show on the show. I'd say that hak5 is still aimed at the same audience, it's just that for me I've kinda grown out of it.
  4. That's achually a great doco (the second one is better though), More people should watch zeitgeist, I've tried getting people to watch it but it seems that they would rather watch lost, prison break ect or another Hollywood movie. My 2c is that all the co-orps should all be left to die along with their bureaucratic governments and corruption. A little bit of anarchy would be a start. Although failing that...Obama seems pretty good. One interesting thing to note is how the election came so close...most Americans seem to support him, and most other countries seemed the all be gunning for Obama to win. It's almost as if theres a second half of America that no-one sees or talks to that still gets to vote (unless they gave co-orps extra votes),
  5. When I first started watching Hak5, I only understood about half of what was being talked about but found it really interesting. Now a few years later I understand most of what's going on and find it boring/irrelavant to me and generally skip through most of the episode until I find a segment or two that interests me. Maybe the show is catering to a newbier audiance/ I'm not as newbish anymore. But I don't think Hak5 can cover all levels at once, and that's alright, I just watch the bits that I find interesting. Part of what makes Hak5 are the projects, such as the pineapple and RSS alarm. Yes, I still enjoy watching Hak5, but I may be looking for a additional show or two to suplement it at my desired level (or just read more) I really enjoyed the side story(Allie and Evil Server) and was disappointed when it was canceled :( Another thing that I enjoyed the episodes involving hacking with Harison, which were always good learning about what's out there and can be done.
  6. To sum fallout 3 up, I think I would describe it as Oblivion combined with S.T.A.L.K.E.R
  7. Can u make antennas yourself? I'd rather make my own before buying a broken laptop off a auction site just to pull apart or a normal retail airal. Also what are the little clip on hat type connectors that connect the airal wires to the card called?
  8. @Xarf: I'd rather use my internal WiFi card as I've finally got it working. So how many wires should a ABGN WiFi card have coming off it? I seem to remember only 2 when I opened my laptop up. I think I can find some of the little cables that connect to my WiFi card. Could connect...Little cables->longer wire->SMA connector->antenna or do I need some sort of insulation on the cable or would it be better to go little cables->SMA connector->SMA-SMA cable->antenna? I kinda wana do this as cheaply as possible, mainly for fun.
  9. How feasible is it to increase the gain of the wifi on my laptop? A HP 6530b, with intel 5100 wifi, running fedora 10. I was thinking a physical mod to the antenna but a software amp would be cool too?
  10. Cloud based won't work...way too much data(think 30GB+). Synkron looks good, I think I'll have to test it out and maybe some of the others listed on wikipedia file synchronization too. I hadn't thought about backups, the main reason for my syncing is to syncronize my source code, books and music. because I would hate for my RAID0 array to die and for me to lose all my importaint data.
  11. So I have one windows XP computer and a linux laptop but I would like to synchronize certain folders between them, preferably automatically or at least in a kinda one click process after it's all setup. I've looked around and there seems to be a few options around for syncing software So my question is, has anyone used any of the various syncing software and can they recommend any?
  12. I fully agree with this, "the c programming language" may not teach you every single detail but it does a great job in a very short book (compared to other programming books). Basically source code for linux and windows is going to be the same (they're both just C), you only really need to consider the operating system specific code if you're writing something that isn't in the standard (using non-standard libraries). So a site I looked at a bit before I got my copy of "the c programming language" is cprogramming.com
  13. OMG how could you lie like that! It comes out 7th of October :D
  14. Thought about it then I decided that I could just code my own things IRL (well kinda RL) and that I didn't need to do it in a game, wasting my time.
  15. Yup notepad++ is good for newbies, just like normal notepad but with syntax highlighting (and heaps of other features and settings) I use notepad++ in windows, Kate with KDE and nano for while I'm using bash.
  16. Don't you have to find a reader for your chip though? There are a few different standards around. Then there's also the issue of finding out what kinda chip it is (though social engineering/google could help here). And just to top it off, the data may be encrypted. Ive looked up about RFID readers and decided a easier way to get free bus rides could be to find a direct thermal printer similar to the one that prints the tickets...which is hard to find too.
  17. Maybe your friend could look at alternate forms of revenue from this media (I'm pretending it's a video), maybe a small semi-transparent logo in the bottom corner, paid for sponsors, and the more downloads your material gets, the more $$ you sponsor pays you. I saw a video somewhere (over teh interwebs) where some a guy talked about how p2p file downloading systems should be embraced and alternate forms of revenue investigated instead of media companies continuing to rely traditional systems of making money from media.
  18. Rise against has to be the number one best band ever! I listen to a bit of metal, so long as it has comprehensible lyrics. Industrial and Punk(various) would be my favorites.
  19. Well that is true... Wow funny that I just finished watching the documentary "America Freedom To Fascism" Now I'm cynical, check it out at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1...duration%3Along It's not quite the full thing, which you can find as second to most popular file on btjunkie.org (IDK if I'm allowed to link it here so I won't)
  20. Thing is that heaps of shit round the world gets blown up, but they just happen to do TV footage of it all day for 11/9... So either it was all a setup to create a war on "terror" || It was all just made worse by the media, making it seem worse than it already is, helping to keep people in fear of the world and turn to their government to protect them. Well that's my conclusion anyway
  21. You're awesome VaKo, popping out the BIOS battery worked and everything is back online. Thanks :D
  22. I'm thinking a southbridge problem? Also before the audio broke completely about half the time my audio would only work in the right ear, and I tested my headphones and they work fine in everything else. Ive tried reseting the BIOS to optimized defaults but that didn't help. I think it mite be dead too, I think I mite have send it back then.
  23. Nope the drive won't show up either.
  24. Hey, I'm running windows XP and was just starting Counter Strike: Source when my computer appeared to freeze up, so I rebooted and my mouse and keyboard still wouldn't work. So I just tried with my PS/2 keyboard and mouse and they worked, so after trying to play CS:S with my trackball mouse (very averagely) I discovered that my Audio did not work either, I then got out my drivers disk for the audio and USB drivers and discovered that my DVD drive had disappeared too. I have a DFI infinity NF ultraII-m2 with a X2 3600+ and a 8600GT. Everything is running at stock speeds but the NB has had a zalman passive cooler fitted and runs a little hotter than I would like(60 degrees). Thanks, Otter
  25. Wouldn't you need something to boost the signal? I thought USB only worked over 4 or so meters?
