Yes, it's cpu based, it's also not a multi-threaded app, so number of cores don't matter. That's the whole time-memory tradeoff thing going. If you're only going to try once, it's not worth making a table, if you are going to reuse the table a few times, then it's worth the time to make it.

How is it screwing up your mapping? Is it only in X11, or is it a system wide issue? I run them both, and it doesn't screw up my settings. There's a setting in X11 that will set the system mappings to it, might want to check that.
