  1. I second that, You should use FTP I would say go with Filezilla - http://filezilla-project.org/
  2. Not costing anything also includes having enough bandwidth to run it without interfering with anything else. But I wouldnt want the damn FBI or something sitting in front of me looking for people using tor for malicious purposes.
  3. I want to set it up myself. I think the best way to describe is like " a gateway from the computers to a phone "
  4. I dont like that skype started charging for regular phone calls, and I really think it would be cool to get my house using the phone from the computer. So we can make phone calls out from our home phone number and receive calls on the computer. I would preffer something free/open source. Something like Asterisk????? Im lost on this so any suggestions would be appreciated!
  5. I dont know of any software that can do that. I dont think its possible to take a laptop and put some special software to make wireless signal farther unless it like.... supercharged your wireless card or something. My original thought was that you could take a bowl, aluminum foil. and some other cool stuff and make a dish to plug your wireless into. xD
  6. I was also thinking about getting one, or an EeePC. I dont want to keep the default operating system. What would be a really nice one to put on and what would be the easiest way to do it. I would try to put Ubuntu on it depending on the size of the hard drive.
  7. Keep an eye on your logs. If the workstations need a firewall/anti-virus would depend on how everything is set up and what kind of users you have . The server should have a good locked down firewall. If you monitor the firewall and keep a tight security policy I would see no reason to put an anti-virus on the server unless someone is going to be executing random exe's all over it. Also you could check out IPcop as a hardware firewall.
  8. I used to have half my desktop filled with icons at any given time. I eventually got tired of crap everywhere and became organized.
  9. I want to get me one now and slam my friends with it when they come over.
  10. If you cant find anything better to do with it i would say, take some ram and a few of those hard drives out. Put a efficient power supply in it and use it as a firewall. I would recommend IPCop as a firewall.
  11. I would also recommend that you use the host OS as the file server because of data integrity issues. Thats a pretty nice system you want to build too, You should put Windows Server 2008 on it. I think you should have a separate disk for the OS and applications to be installed on, and make the big RAID dedicated to storing stuff.
  12. I have seen paintball guns rigged up to cameras that shoot anything that moves. It is almost impossible not to get hit. I couldnt think of a more perfect time to use one. :) I would suggest putting a video camera in your window or something. If your flood lights are bright enough you dont need night vision.
  13. LOL You may want to just use a wireless cracking program. Instead of using your blackberry as a supercomputer.
  14. I would recommend FreeNAS. Its worth it if you have a device to throw decent hard drives in. I would love to have a few terabyte drives in a box running FreeNAS
  15. I am looking for a tool that can map the devices on a network. Something that will go out and look for devices and list everything it finds or better, make a cool chart of the devices instead of a boring old list.
  16. You say the IP address is static and i assume you dont have a GUI to configure network settings. You can use your preffered text editor but i am going to say "nano" for this. You will edit your "/etc/resolv.conf" file to change the DNS server sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf There should be entries there called nameserver. Change them to the IP address of you DNS server(s) EXAMPLE: nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XX nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XX Once you save the file you should be good to go
  17. If you are using a router as a "hub" its most likely not acting like a hub but a switch and is smart and knows who gets what packets. If you want to sniff your brothers network traffic you should do a man in the middle attack. I would suggest to use cain and abel because it is simple. Use cain and abel to poison your brothers ARP cache to make his computer think your the router and the router think your his computer. Then all the packets will be going through you. You can then open a packet sniffing tool like Wireshark and watch the packets.
  18. If you are going to use it as a webserver you dont really need to resolve hostnames on it. But its some sort of DNS error. Is there anything that could be messing with DNS servers. Is the IP on ubuntu static and did you specify the correct DNS server to use?
  19. I stumbled upon that before xD Funny!
