Accessing C:\

.... To boot my install of Windows, I set up a bootable CD with a boot loader that pointed to my Windows install on the 30GB partition; when I wanted to boot into my unrestricted install of Windows, all I had to do was pop in my "special" CD, hit F12 to get the bootable media selection screen, select the CD-ROM drive, and let the machine start up! The best part was, unless you popped the in CD there was no way to boot into my Windows install, and you couldn’t tell that the system had been altered in any way! ....

I'm interested to experiment with this (on a PC of mine!).  I understand everything, except creation of a boot loader that points to my "hidden" installation of Windows.  I know that I can create a bootable CD using Nero but what about the boot loader - how would I go about that?  Is it simply a copy of BOOT.INI with the appropriate change to point to the new partition?  My current BOOT.INI has the line:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS

so would I have to change it to:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS

My "gut" feeling is that it's not so simple!

You could access it quite easily if you wrote your own program. Think about it for a second before replying.

I've been thinking about it for quite a while but haven't stumbled upon divine inspiration (yet!).  Care to enlighten me?

Its VERY simple to write an app in VB to do this, I'm sure there is even one already made for you. try a Google search for "VB file explorer" you will find something and if you don't know VB search for it in a language you do know, i chose VB a few years back because it was simple and took me 5 minutes to make!

Hi GonZor

I'm not sure how a file explorer would help.  I'd like to do what Leapo suggested.  I understand everything, except creating a boot loader on a bootable CD to point to the "hidden" installation of an OS on the partition that's created with GParted.  I know that I can create a bootable CD with Nero, but I don't know how to create the boot loader.

I was under the impression Tamrix was referring to the original thread question, not your question about boot loaders. sorry. With your problem i couldn't be much help I haven't played much with boot loaders although if you happen to find a solution I would be very interested because i have a few ideas.

Hi GonZor - no worry.  I suspected that there might have been a "crossed wire"!

I sent a PM to Leapo a while ago for information about the bootloader but I haven't had a reply.  I assume that my message, or the response, has been lost in view of the recent problem with the Hak5 server(s).  It's for this reason that I posted a similar question in the thread in the hope that Leapo or someone else might be able to enlighten me.

A bit off topic, but I subsrcibe to another group which, in their rules, specifically bar contributors from posting useless comments, "Thanks", "WTF?" etc.  The moderators are VERY strict in issuing warning points.  A certain number of warning points means the account is suspended for a period whilst further points means that the account is cancelled.  This seemingly draconian policy has resulted in posts being useful to the community and has also had the effect of no-one simply posting to get their post count up.  I rarely see points being handed out more than once.

I tend to respond here to anyone who contibutes positively to a problem that I've posed but that's simply being polite, rather than trying to get my count up.  The mechanism on the other group is to send a PM to thank someone directly.

Well, I've had this problem ever since I was a little boy. I went to Doctor Hotstuff LeZazz to see what was wrong. He said that I had post-birth stupitis postus, or PBSP for short. He said that symptoms are posting really stupid stuff like this post, "High Five," "Wee!" and "lolzomgbbqftw." I'm very open about my condition. If you have any questions about it, ask me or Docter Hotstuff LeZazz about it.

The schools in my area have their computers setup as limited clients using novel and XP pro. It has been a while but even back then they restricted user access to the C drive. I could tell that they did not use deepfreeze or something similar because files would stay on the desktop for weeks. For some reason their network security was horrible. Random computers would be down for days, because of massive amounts of downloaded porn while the school's IT guy reinstalled all the security tools.

i suggest you poke around with the system if you do anything

maybe create an unknown file type . . .  try to run it . . . .  and then click browse in the window that comes up when windows is all like "AHHH im confused iv never seen this before" by default windows will take you straight to "c:program files" or "m:program files" or what ever letter they decided to put the systemroot on. . .  then what i suggest is you push that little folder button that takes you back a folder . . .  now you should be able to get into the windows folder doobla cleek and away you go ( just one more suggestion use command. com instead of cmd. exe same thing just they may not have thought of killing access to it)

Disclaimer: nothing you get from me can be brought back to me . . .  these are just "suggestions" and not commands. .  you do these things at your own risk of being kicked from school (like i almost did several times :lol:)

My school had this same setup, however all we had to do is  right click > create shortcut > "C:" > done
