Scariest movie of all time?

Scary movies you say, eh? You've come to the right address. Moo hoo ha ha.

Some unfortunate individual displayed his lack of knowledge by mentioning The Ring. That movie IS NOT scary. Ringu, on the other hand, IS scary. It's the original that The Ring was based upon. Girlfriend of mine got a call when she was watching it and was so scared she refused to pick it up.

Another movie that does a good job of freaking out babysitters is When A Stranger Calls. A babysitter is getting freaky calls from someone. The most scary part is when the babysitter is told where the calls are coming from...

The Eye is a chinese movie about a blind woman who gets a cornea transplant allowing her to see for the first time. However she winds up seeing strange, non-descript people who aren't really there. (and no, they're not dead people)

The Ju-On series is pretty damned scary. You people might be familiar with part 3 of the series (they've done 5 so far) which was remade and released as "The Grudge". This remake is actually fairly decent as they basically sent 9 english actors to Japan and let the crew there simple reshoot the entire movie. Not a lot of script changes and much cleaner special effects (which kind of detracts from the original, but that's more a matter of taste). The scene in the shower where Rika/Karen is washing her hair and finds an extra hand helping out probably freaked out most people.

Now we go from moderately scary, to more extreme scary/disgusting/disturbing. And face it, people: If you want to see that kind of stuff, your only recourse is Japanese cinema.

Hollywood will NEVER *EVER* make movies like these:

Ichi The Killer by Miike Takashi. This is a movie based on a really violent/erotic manga. Here in .nl they use little icons on the package to inform buyers if the movie contains drug use, discrimination, sex, bad language, etc. This movie is the ONLY movie I know that has *ALL* available icons, and without a doubt deserves EVERY SINGLE ONE of them. At opening night someone threw up in the cinema, to the delight of the producer. Hell, the first shot of the film is a guy viciously beating up his girlfriend.

Evil Dead Trap is a movie about a TV host and her crew who have a show during the late hours of the night in which they air viewer-submitted footage. They receive a strange film that appears as if someone strapped a handycam to his head, hit record, drove to an abandoned factory, entered the building to find some girl tied to a post, brings out a knife and stabs her in her eyeball (yes, this footage will make most people cringe, because it's VERY up-close and personal. Rumor has it they used a real corpse for that). Since the TV host and her crew do have some morals, they go out and investigate.

Audition by Miike Takashi is a very slow movie about a man who after the death of his wife decides it's time to find a new one. He arranges with a friend who owns a casting bureau to get a bunch of girls to audition for a part in a non-existing movie, when in fact they will basically be auditioning for the part of becoming the guy's wife (and no, there's no sex in this movie). The guy picks one girl as she's got that something special, but then the girl disappears.

Okay, now. I'm not gonna get into a huge "my penis is bigger than yours" contest over this, but I'd just like to point out two things.

1) Just because I used the Ring as a source to parody in these forums does not mean that I have a lack of knowledge in "scary movies", and does not mean that I prefer the Americanised version to the Japanese original(s). It is an easily recognisable film to parody, and that's what I required at the time. I happen to hold a very dear love for old american "scary movies" such as "Black Christmas", "Halloween" and the ilk. That's personal choice, and nothing's wrong with having an opinion, just don't assume I'm unfortunate because I choose to make a jest.

2) Why do you assume I'm male? I am, as it happens, but why assume it?

#1. Point taken.

#2. I didn't assume. I characterised you as an individual, and to the extent that I'm familiar with the english language I was under the impression that unspecified gender is assumed male. Lighten up.

Going back to the original topic of cool scary movies, check out Demons. It's a movie by Lamberto Bava shot in 1985 about a group of people going to the cinema to see a scary movie. A prop was placed in the hall of the cinema, and some girl cut herself on it. That cut somehow infected her and turned her into a zombie. Before you know if the remaining occupants of the cinema have to run for their lives.

A few years later Demons 2 came out. Interestingly, it stars a *LOT* of people who were also in the first movie (and, I might add, DIED in that one). It's a bit too 'Hollywood' on the script for my taste, with a pregnant woman as one of the main characters (you should already know the ending by now).

Both movies have decent stories, and that gritty feel you only get when you're forced to make a horror movie using a shoe-string budget.

Aye, sorry I snapped, I've got the dreaded Manflu.

Some of the coolest scary movies I've seen have been either really, really old, or just plain old. The original "Nosferatu" has to be seen, not because it's that scary, but because it's simply a classic of the genre, and the same can be said for "Ginger Snaps", but for underground cult status.

If you're into your zombie movies, but don't really like the modernised versions - i.e. Dawn of the Dead (remake) or 28 Days Later, then check out anything pre 1985 by George A. Romero. Pretty funky stuff.

I have it. It's a silent movie that turned out to be a big copyright infringement to boot. Didn't watch it yet.

I *LOVE* this movie. The sequel was even better. A lot more humor in there.

"My best case scenario, Elanor, is hair everywhere buy my eyeballs. Elongation of the spine 'til my skin splits. Teets. And a growing tolerance and maybe affection for the smell and taste of feces, not just my own. And then, excruciating death."

This is followed by the social worker jotting the word 'Lesbian' on her notebook.

Got all of them aswell, both originals and remakes. 28 days later was GREAT. DotD remake was WAY weak in the storyline. Return Of The Living Dead was a pretty cool movie too, but the sequels rather sucked.

They made a TON of zombie movies in Italy around the 80s and 90s, most notably the Zombi series and the Demons/Demoni movies. Japan joined in on the fun with movies like Biozombie and the more aquired taste Stacy.

That last one is a disgustingly happy zombie movie. Japanese school girls get somehow infected by something. This puts them in a trance-like pre-death happy state, where they are all joyfull and run around with little bells to make happy noises and stuff. Then they die and the next day they become zombies. The soundtrack to the movie is mostly that happy stuff you hear in elevators. I don't know a lot of people who can stand a movie like this (it's so over the top happy...), but the Romero feel is definately there for those that can stomach it.

Don't worry, Syntax. You'll always be our Forum n00b.

If you want scary in an "Oh my god, who do I sue to get those 90 minutes of my life back" kind of way, check out I Spit on Your Corpse, I Piss on Your Grave, or even worse, Splatter Farm.

Looks like a porn.

There is a fairly explicit female masturbation scene in there, but most of it is just a revenge/payback flick. Day Of The Woman/I Spit On Your Grave! on the other hand qualifies a lot better as a porn flick (even though this one is also primarily a revenge/exploitation flick). City girl comes to live in the country for a while to get away from things and work on writing a book when a couple of rednecks brutally rape her and leave her for dead. She survives and starts to get even. Originally banned in 10 countries.

If the 'banned in X countries' thing piques your interest, check out Cannibal Ferox. Banned in no less than 31 countries, and actually has a pretty funny ending. There's a girl running around topless most of the time, but nothing really sexual happening here. The cannibalism and torture is what's throwing off the rating boards. I own the uncut version, and it's pretty sick. That topless girl gets hung up on hooks through her boobs to name just one scene that tends to make people squirm.

Saw Cannibal Ferox 2 too, but that one simply has no redeeming factors.

And since we're now on the topic of cannibals, did you know that the ending of The Blair Which Project (which, I might add, *SUCKED*) was a complete rip-off of Cannibal Holocaust? The only difference is that the camera in CH falls down, facing the character holding it as opposed to facing away from him.
