  1. I made this back before everyone started coming out with digital picture frames and decided to revamp it into something new. http://www.flickr.com/photos/9762454@N04/3363046870/ It's a Digital Hinote VP575 laptop - small and quiet no fans needed. 166 MHz Pentium 2 GB Hard drive 80MB RAM - runs at about 75MB usage, jumps up to 96MB used when using VNC or updating picture. Ethernet right now since there's no wifi at work :( I'm thinking about Gives the basics of time, calendar, weather forecast. Background changes each hour.
  2. I wanted vanity plates so I changed my name to J2L 4685.
  3. It all depends on several factors. Slightly Technical laymen's speak ahead. Is the power supply a regulated supply or unregulated A regulated supply will generate the rated voltage up to rated current. So a regulated supply rated at 12v 2.2 amps will generate 12v if the load is 500mA, 1.0 amp or 2.2amps. If you go above the rated current/load most will crowbar the output, meaning it will drop to 0v. This is to protect the power supply. Others will just not put out more then the rated current and eventually heat up and burn out. An unregulated supply is a different beast. They only generate the rated voltage at the rated current/load. Not a good idea to hook up to something unless you know what the load will be. So, let's say the 10v supply was an unregulated supply. If you're put a 500mA load on it, the voltage measured would be greater then 10V, If you put a 800mA load on it the voltage would be less then 10V. So, let's say your device required 1.2 amps. This is double what the unregulated supply is rated for so you would probably only see around 5V+- a volt. Now, for sake of arguement let's say the 10V supply was a regulated supply. When you plugged it in the laptop probably required more then 600mA so you were running the 10V supply at it's max limit. Not good for the supply and not good for the laptop. BTW, most laptops will run on less then rated voltage. They will disable things like charging of batteries and such. Take for instance the Linksys WRT54GS (I know it's not a laptop). It's power supply is 12volts but switches that internally to 3.3 volts, so it will run off 4 AA batteries. Even though the laptop supply is 12v 2.2amps this is worst case scenario, so technically you could probably get away with as much as half that but 1.8amps is probably the real limit. Depends on how you use the computer as to how much current it will draw (burning DVD, running HD, video brightness, CPU speed, etc) Just my opinion.
  4. I've got one mounted in a picture frame and it's running Rainmeter with 10foot HUD (Time, date, weather) and John's background switcher. Each hour it updates the weather report and pulls a random picture off flickr.
  5. MacMakeup http://www.gorlani.com/publicprj/macmakeup/macmakeup.asp How do you know it works? Well, if you on a wifi hotspot and change your MAC you have to re-authorize. I.E. if you're at a hotel you have to 'agree' to the TOS again. Say for instance you're stuck in some hotel in crap-hole town before a CON and you need to get some movies for movie night. ;)

    win95

What are talking about? I've got Windows XP, yes XP running on a 166Mhz with 48MB of RAM! It's a single purpose machine but it runs. Only uses 32MB of RAM. On a more usable note a nLite installation of Windows2000 runs great on my 100Mhz Digital Hinote with 80MB of RAM. I nlited it also removed unneeded services. If you're having problems with Damn Small Linux let me know the issues and I'll help you through it. In general first thing to try is. fb800x600 apci=off apm=off noacpi noddc nomce @xdmag For 128MB of RAM, try Xubuntu it uses a XFCE which a light way desktop.
  7. By that you mean, even if you load the correct RAID drivers it still doesn't see it? Have you tried something like lostpassword.com. They won't recover the password but you can reset it. I've always used them to reset the password to blank, never had luck with using them to change a password. http://dailycupoftech.com/2009/02/26/vista...ry-helps-widow/ ^ He did on a RAID system. Your mileage may vary.
  8. Just my little home server cabinet. Holds my VPN, switch and DSL router. Not much but the rest of the equipment is in my lab.
  9. I've had pretty good luck using AP51 and the Gargoyle-router firmware (openwrt base) on 2 of my Fon+
  10. Take a look at ADS(Alternate Data Streams) in files. Works with NTFS.
  11. Yeh, that's mine. I was going to post it. It should still be mostly valid though I have not checked. It's all about getting the buildroot configured and the directories right.
  12. Nice sig, but there's nowhere for me to enter my ccv number.
  13. Fon original - One antenna, One WAN port, Two SSIDs $19.95 Fon+ - one antnenna, One WAN port, One LAN port, Two SSIDS $29.95 Fon 2.0 One antenna, One Wan port, One Lan port, Two SSIDS, One USB Port $49.95 There were only 1000 Fon 2.0 Betas produced it appears they sold them all as there are no longer for sale. They are nearly identical hardware wise sans the USB Port.
  14. $14.99 USD, captutes composite to machine. There's no need in going any higher since it's VHS, you might gain some from using S-Video. http://cgi.ebay.com/EASYCAP-USB-2-0-VIDEO-...A1%7C240%3A1318
  15. Sager 7260 (Clevo M72RS) 12.1" netbook/laptop/portable/labtop/computer There's also a Mac sticker dead center but you can't see it, just to screw with the sheeple.
  16. Yes, this is the best way to do it. It does take some initial setting up and uses quite a bit of disk space. You can also do a Windows and Linux encrypted system. Each system is encrypted seperately then you have a common home partition that is also encrypted, in fact this partition could contain a second encrypted truecrypt container to keep the most very sensitive data 3x protected. It's also less suspicious, You'll gladly boot the computer is needed but you won't divulge the existance of the protected data, this also means you can't have it auto-mount. If you don't want to keep remembering different passwords, use a keyfile that is encrypted also. Here's a decent guide I found to get you started. http://www.shappyhopper.co.uk/b2154/32bitlaptopguide.pdf
  17. I've had really good luck with using Getdataback NTFS from runtime.org. It's ressurected a few drives. Free to try, pay to recover, it's well worth the license though.
  18. Like this? http://www.zoneos.com/zonescreen.htm or http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ of course the pay for version is maxivista LINUX xdmx http://dmx.sourceforge.net/
  19. You're missing a PDA running Familiar linux ;) A little sandpaper and some scratch remover and that orange fon logo goes away and you're left a shiny white router*. Some day I'll post a picture of the stuff I carry for work but it takes too long to dissassemble and quoting the TSA "You've got too many damn pockets" *I'll post a quick howto and pics if anyone cares, I do have another fon I need to neuter.

  21. Just a note if you're using Kismet transmit power means nothing. Kismet runs the card in passive mode so your most important thing is receiver sensitivity and a quality antenna with low loss. If you're using Netstumbler then transmit power AND receiver sensitivity come into play. Think of it as shouting really loud then being able to hear a whisper at the same time.
  22. DHCP Server(s) you can run on your machine http://www.softcab.com/dhcp-server/index.php http://sourceforge.net/projects/dhcp-dns-server/
  23. There's nothing wrong with wardriving itself, it's when you cross the line. I've logged over 100k points. Haven't driven in a while though been taking planes everywhere. If you find something open your better off leaving it alone. Lest you go to owner's house and inform then you possibly open up a pandora's box of accusations of how you know, what you're doing, etc. Like vector said, foxhunting is fun. It was done at Defcon a few years bag, IIRC they hid a PDA in a mylar potato chip bag to lower it's signal strength. Lot's of fun I heard. BTW, foxhunting stems from the amatuer radio, with a small transmitter hidden then used your radio to triangulate the signal and find the "fox". BTW, if you do it with Netstumbler be sure to use an Orinoco card and driver as that's the only way you'll get real SNR readings from the program. Have fun!
  24. I've had this discussion time and time again. I will not get into a pissing match with irrelevent analogies about garden sprinkler, unlocked cars, reading papers by your neighbor's living room lights or your lack of ability to understand the ownership of an intangible object. Open Access Point != Permission Wardriving is not a crime. Wardrivers do not connect to access points, they log the presence of only. Once you make a connection you are no longer a wardriver but a criminal. If you connect to a computer network without the owner's express permission you are comitting a crime. It doesn't matter how long, how much or for what reasons. BTW, over at the Netstumbler forums you will find a post with numerous state's computer laws that we've compiled. If you're looking for a compact wardriving system. I would pick up a cheap iPaq off ebay. If you're really advantageous get one that you can put linux on and run kismet. I've got notes http://www.frontiernet.net/~beakmyn/ In fact you can run kismet (server or dron) on a wrt54gs. The Canadian border patrol loves to see those on the dash of your car when you roll through. No sir, that's not a radar detector.
  25. It's not called piggy backing, it's called felony theft of services and unauthorized use of a computing device.
