  1. I was reading on /. about BlueSecurity. An Israeli anti-spam company that gave up becuse they kept on getting DDOS attacks from botnets. This brings me to my question. Do you guys feel a little pissed off at the n00bs whose computers are infected and are responsible for these attacks. Now some would say some people just aren't into technology or computers the way that we are and so wouldn't know what a botnet/phishing/spyware all are, and so they can't be blamed for their ignorance, but take my friend as an example.. He's got a computer, about 2/3 years old with Windows XP. He's telling me the story, "oh! my sister installed this little program on the computer now i keep getting popup adds for gambling when i go on the internet (note use of the word internet when he means web, and internet means IE)." I explain spyware to him and tell him to reinstall windows, which he doesn't want to do. I then suggest using Firefox (he's still going to be an annoying zombie on the internet but now hopefully spyware isn't going to be able to grab the data he enters into forms on the web), and he says, "but then i can't use the internet, you can't go on the internet without using the internet explored, (i studied linguistics in high school, notice the definite article ie. "the" before internet explorer)" Again, I personally don't really blame people for not being into the same stuff that i'm into, lets be honest, I spend heaps of time at a computer because i can't find chiks to spend that time with :), (in the case of this friend he has a social life quite less enthralling than mine, I think his excuse is just that he's dumb, :P) but to just be completely ignorant to these things, and to be told what you need to do and to just ignore sound advice does piss me off. The problem is that if you are dumb about this, you get the popups and the spyware and all of that other stuff and that only affects you. When you're part of a botnet and are part of problems such as these kinds of DDOS against people like BlueSecurity, attacks that cripple small parts of the internet, then it's not just you that's being affected but other people as well. In such a situation i personally don't feel that it's entirely ok to just sit there with a dumb look on your face. Your thoughts guys?
  2. /me respectfully disagress /me points to the dumbest hair piece on television /me misses IRC :'(
  3. I'm writing this in Firefox 2.0alpha1. There's an alpha 2 release that come out about a week ago available here ----> http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/ for those that are interested. Just wanted to get some opinions on the new alpha release of firefox. I've been using it for a little bit. It doesn't have a whole heap of new stuff, however wikipedia does say "There are still some bugs present and it is not feature-complete, so any downloads of Bon Echo should be taken with a grain of salt" so I guess it's not that big a deal. I think the bookmark manager thing is a little nicer, and the ability to close tabs with only 1 mouse click is something that should have been there earlier. I'm only a little worried that once i get a lot of tabs, and the width of my tabs gets really small, that i'm going to start clicking the X by accident. The 1 thing that does shit me is the edit bookmarks button on the bookmarks toolbar, i can't get rid of it. Big smiley face for whoever knows how to do that. Also, you really notice how customisable Firefox is when you go back to the generic version. I decided not to move my profile across just in case some of the extensions don't like the new Firefox Anyway, if you've used the new alpha release tell us what you think of it.
  4. /me asks for the big guys in the forum to lend some of their body mass. I'm probably on the other end of the spectrum. I'm totally skinny, frail and weak. Don't blow on me or else i'll topple over and shatter.
  5. not sure if you guys noticed http://shelleytherepublican.com/meaning-and-purpose.html however, there are people just as retarded as this...they vote/work for the republican party
  6. LOL, you don't want to use gaim to get onto AOL either, Darren has a fear of high memory applications. Just take a lunge into the unknown :D Cool graphics FTW!!! :D
  7. I was in a shitty and depressed mood, then I go to digg and find this site http://thepiratebay.org/legal.php my mood improved greatly I personally recommend this http://static.thepiratebay.org/dreamworks_response.txt their response to dreamworks, but they are all good
  8. Jack Bauer FTW!!!!! http://www.notrly.com/jackbauer/index.php?topthirty Some of my favourites The city of Los Angeles once named a street after Jack Bauer in gratitude for his saving the city several times. They had to rename it after people kept dying when they tried to cross the street. No one crosses Jack Bauer and lives. A standard deck now contains 48 cards. Too many people were getting hurt for trying to play Jack. If everyone on "24" followed Jack Bauer's instructions, it would be called "12". Once, someone tried to tell Jack Bauer a "knock knock" joke. Jack Bauer found out who was there, who they worked for, and where the goddamned bomb was. If it tastes like chicken, looks like chicken, and feels like chicken, but Jack Bauer says its beef. Then it's fucking beef. Superman wears Jack Bauer pajamas. When Kim Bauer lost her virginity, Jack Bauer found it and put it back. Jack Bauer played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won. I'm sure you get the idea Jack Bauer > Chuck Norris > Bruce Lee
  9. That wasn't at all nice, I don't condone that kind of immature behviour in any way. If you want a working link though... http://media.spikedhumor.com//22282/yikers..._vigilantes.wmv :)
  10. Am I the only one for whom the link goes to a porn site?
  11. that was wess' rocky thing where he climbed the stairs. also, that windows live locale, is it just me, or is the quality of that much better than google earth.
  12. nice. I heard that actually macs aren't quite that secure because they have some unix apps that have security problems. But to just think that you're using a mac and that is reason enough to not give any concern to security, you probably deserve to be hacked.
  13. That wasn't how I would do it, although, a unique and mabey interesting way of holding the bootsecter on the windows partition and using the NT boot loader My method, were I to duel boot. Install windows, if it's XP or win2000 you can use the utility in the windows installer, otherwise, like if i were installing win98 or something really old and crappy like that, i would use a linux livecd and use fdisk and the mkfs utilities. Make a fat32 or NTFS partition for windows. This would only be as big as i want my windows partition to be, then leave the rest free space. Note that windows needs to be the first partition and it needs to be a primary partition, not on an extended partition, and it needs to be set active. Then just install windows normally. Then install linux to the empty space that you left earlier, and install grub to /dev/hda or /dev/sda if you have a SCSI device. Grub is a heaps better boot loader to use than the NT one, and the process of duel booting is made heaps easier cos you can easily adjust it just by changing /boot/grub/menu.lst usually a gub config file something like this would do the job (Windows) root (hd0, 1) chainloader +1 (Linux) root (hd0,2) kernel /boot/vmlinuz initrd /boot/initrd.img Note i just made up this this config file just now, just to descibe how I used to go about duel booting. It probably has syntax errors. I don't duel boot anymore anyway, i just use linux. But that's how i would go about it. This isn't a guide, just how I did it. and probably a tiny bit easier than what Vako described. If people really want it I could write up a guide and put it in the wiki, but there must be a million other guides out there describing how to install linux and how to duel boot, there wouldn't really be any point
  14. This was on digg a while ago, it might be useful http://visualcplus.blogspot.com/ Basically some guy wrote some exercises to learn C. I think that it'll help
  15. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i saw the hacking the skies video and the other presentation on wireless that was done by the russian guys (which i got none of thanks to the poor sound quality and the russian accents) so i guess mabey i skipped this one to watch later. wrong decision. This was incrdibally enlightening. Some of the stuff they were describing...
  16. ^^haha, well I leave mine open siply because1 my main comptuer is on a wire so its fairly safe, 2 most people wouldnt hack it cuz its no a default ssid so they wont bother, and 3 my nieboors are too far away to see my wireless entwrok (yet I ca see thiers). But my nieboors are all "linksys's" so im not afraid, sides i would notice if someone is on my netowk, and its liek worst case senerio ill reformte my hdd and put on WPA so no sweet, sides my dad not beign exactly a geek, he woudlnt understand y if windows fucks up it asks him for a password Remind me not to ever take security advice from spektromax (or english lessons :P ). Just cos the SSID isn't generic isn't exactly a thorough set of security procedures. lol So basically what i hear is that WEP can be cracked easily and in the case of WPA, don't use a weak password. So therefore, from that, if the network uses WPA with a nice long and difficult to guess password it's near impossible to crack?
  17. I think that basically what people want, and correct me if i'm wrong, is just a hak.5 branded distro. Nothing new, but just more or less something like nubuntu with a hack.5 wallpaper or something like that, basically just a desktop theme. Correct me if you totally disagree with any of this, but people don't seem to be saying i wish nubuntu had this or backtrack had that. Just an idea, mabey TomB could make a special release of nubuntu for the dvd. This way it's not a whole heap of extra work (i think anyway) to just make an intermediate release for the dvd. Perhaps a nice hak.5 wallpaper, set hak5.org as the defaul homepage for firefox and perhaps include anything new that had been developed since the last release. That way nothing exceptional that has to be done except for basically a re-release of nubuntu. But basically I guess the people have to want it. Why make something that people are never going to burn and use. Everyone said it a million times already, there are a million distros already and it's not that hard to just download a pic and go desktop ----> background ----> select:hak5.png even i probably wouldn't even use it, (nothing against nubuntu, TomB does good work, i just like other distros and don't really like xfce, pretty buttons ftw ;)) Just throwing ideas around What does everyone think about that, particularly TomB cos it's basically him who would have to do all the work :)
  18. That toad is so retarded, but i dugg it anyway.
  19. CeBIT australia is on in about 5 weeks. you have to register before to attend, don't know when registration closes, but it's $25 otherwise. You have to fill in like you name and contact information and stuff like that. It's in sydney though, which is a pain in the arse, cos i'm in Melbourne, and Sydney is too far to walk. For those who can make it, go and send back pictures so that i can enjoy the event vicariously. info at www.cebit.com.au
  20. After reading this http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/user/view/cs_msg/26023 I wanted to ask the question. I personally don't have a laptop so haven't gone wardriving. So I wouldn't be able to know how hard WEP cracking was before and how difficult it is now. So an open question to anyone who has/does this sort of stuff, or perhaps security professionals, how hard/long is WEP cracking and perhaps other wireless related hacking.
  21. Windows broke on my computer many months ago and I didn't really notice. I had been using debian as my primary OS, or basically my only OS, for at least a year.
  22. Me My guy just looks mean all with his ak47 i'm scared just posting
  23. WOW great. Thanks I was listening to sploitcast when they went to this and heard about all the really cool stuff and wanted so bad to have been there, being on the other side of the planet makes getting there kinda hard, but now i've got the next best think.
