  1. I'm looking to get a new lap-top this week hopefully and thought I'd get a few suggestions. My main use for the laptop will mainly be VMWare. I currently have a Dell Lattitude D830 which is great, but I need something a lil better. I've been writing alot of video tutorials on the D830, but with only 2GB of ram there is quite a bit of lag trying to run win7, vista and leopard in vmware. (not all at the same time) I need something where I can run at least 1 instance of server 2k3 or 2k8, win7, vista and leopard at the same time. Hopefully this is feasible with an affordable laptop. I prefer Intel based, but will go with amd if need be. A recent episode of hak5 where Darren was at the Mubix layer he mentioned Mubix was running like 12 VM's during the episode on his laptop, curious to know what laptop he had. What I would like included: Wifi a/g/n Bluetooth Webcam 500 GB + HDD Looking on Best Buy's site I saw this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemplatemap...sc=abcat0500000 However I'm a little hesitant about buying HP as I've bought 2 brand new over the years and both have had hardware failure after only a little over a year.
  2. Thank you very much digip, I had forgotten all about deepfreeze. This just might work.
  3. Are you talking about the same recovery solution you get by pressing F8 at boot and choosing the system recovery option?
  4. I'm looking for a variant of Steady State compatible with Windows 7. Anybody have any recommendations? I really like steady state but it's only compatible up to Vista.
  5. @MRGRIM, thanks for the link. The FOG project seems very interesting and I'm definitely going to implement this into my configuration. As for Clonezilla I have that on my multipass, but I've never used it before I first heard about it when the multipass came to Hak5. I'm still interested in finding a good app that I can install via the windows gui, but with options to do "system restore" if you will before the OS loads. There was one I used to use in like 2003, but I can't remember the name of it for nothing.
  6. I've not messed with Trinity yet, I've been meaning to. I'm familiar with different methods of saving data from rendered systems. I just need an actual app that will load before the OS and provide system restore basically. Preferably one compatible with windows 7.
  7. I'm looking for a good recovery app that will loads before the OS in the event a system becomes un-bootable I can restore it to a previous state. I use to use Roxio GoBack and another one I can't quite remember the name. If anyone has any good recommendations I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
  8. @ digip, I'm aware of how to configure file sharing in windows, thanks though. My concern was that I had folders shared when I never set any shares, but I believe it's like Sparda said their shared by default, because I just installed another system with 7 and checked and those folders were shared. This seems to me like it would be a big security risk. I'm still new to 7, but imagine your average joe not knowing about LAN security and going to a coffee shop hopping on and setting the AP as "Home" network. Haven't tested yet, but if that's all it takes then there goes all his files open to the public.
  9. Ok what's confusing is how exactly did that directory become shared? I never set or allow any shares on that machine?
  10. Wondering if someone can help me understand something here. I have 2 internet connections, 2 separate networks, 1 a basic home workgroup and the other 3-4 machines on a domain provided via server 2k3. Still learning 2k3 and AD which was the purpose for the domain. My concern is one machine I use frequently my laptop is a member of the domain it's running windows 7 ultimate. I use it on the domain and off the domain. Now when off the domain for example if I connect it to the workgroup and logon to the machine with a local account and then I view my workgroup machines I see it has the "users" folder shared and I can access basically anything on this lap-top. Kinda freaked me out at first, because I've not set any policies yet besides changing the password policy. I guess my question is, would this be a setting on the DC or somewhere in GP that did this?
  11. Hey guys, I've been writing some video tutorials for a group of friends using CamStudio and Camtasia 6. All is great. I like how hak5 does it providing a xvid download, HD download, etc. I'm going to provide an .avi download and possible mp4, problem is when producing the video to embed it in an html page using Camtasia the quality is very very blurry and not able to ready any text. I have tried changing about all the settings I could and resolution when producing and all are blurry. Using CamStudio's SWF Producer the quality is excellent just as I recorded, but when say I minimize a window or move the mouse cursor it leaves an outline of the mouse or the window for a few seconds. Was wondering if there was anything I could do to eliminate that?
  12. I haven't gotten it to work yet, however somehow I got igetter to see the link and download, but didn't support resume. I do like the interface and all the options with jdownloader, thanks for that :)
  13. I cannot give a link at this time, this is for adito openvpn-als specifically. I have setup with some family video's, zipped picture archive's, etc. and some are rather large file's. So if my family is downloading a file and I happen to reboot the OpenVPN-als server then they have to start over. I did copy the link location and tried to add it as a new download with both iGetter and DAP, but it didn't even see the file.
  14. Hey guys I'm looking for a download manager that I can implement with Aditio. It must provide resume support for https, that seems to be the hard part. I've looked at iGetter and DAP, but cannot even get a download started via https.
  15. I think I did stumble across something that may help finally, just concerned and want to make sure that no one will be able to access the server unless I add their IP? http://www.askapache.com/htaccess/apache-a...n-htaccess.html
  16. I'm running Apache as my web server with about 40 user's who access it as well as Adito. What I'm trying to do is I don't want them giving out their account info to friends to use the server so I'm wanting to set up a list of allowed IP's to access the server. I have a basic .html site that links to adito I'd like to set it so even when accessing the .html site they have to enter username/pass before even seeing the site, but the biggest issue is adito. I didn't see any options in the adito config to setup an access list or authentication other then personal info. Then I thought I'm sure I can do this with apache. I'm sure the following is what I need to set: AllowOverride All # # Controls who can get stuff from this server. # Order allow, deny Allow from all but I'm not sure how to set it for access by ip only. By the way I absolutely love adito, it's one of the greatest things yet:)
  17. I have successfully used the Adito RDP client to RDP back home to a Vista box. It worked one time and I haven't used it since. What I did was set it up with the proper credentials to connect back to home, I'm running it on port 3390. I launched the Adito agent first then used the favorite to connect back at home and tunnel RDP. Psychosis if your interested I will set it up again and give detailed info on exactly what I did for the RDP connection. Also set up a ssh tunnel it works nicely and does bypass websense at least for me it did. VPN tunnel I'm sure will also work.
  18. I am working on a media server and streaming seems to be my biggest problem. I've tried a few variations such as Tversity, Orb and Jinzora which I really like, but wasn't able to get much help with. Now I have a 2k3 DC setup using AD for all my users. They VPN in (PPTP) for now and then access the media directory with all the files. My problem is the stream is a bit choppy and it takes about 2-5 minutes before say a 700MB .avi file starts to even play. I have a 22 MB down 5 Up connection connected to a Linksys RVS4000. I posted on another forum and a member mentioned I need to increase my upload for better performance. Is there not an easier alternative for a solution such as this to host from home without a pay for service? If there is anyway to get better performance via my current VPN solution that'd be great, but I'm really liking a web based solution such as Jinzora and the fact that the user doesn't have to install anything besides maybe a plugin.
  19. I saw that also, but I thought that was only for capturing video from a setop box? A Mythtv box will provide a web interface that user's can log into then access a library of music, movies, etc. and then stream them through their web browser? Or open externally? Thanks alot for the quick response, you don't know how much I appreciate any help I can get on this project.
  20. Still struggling with this as support lacks for windows. I am really liking the look and feel of Jinzora, but am open to other suggestions. I've been working on this over a week now and am just stuck. I've looked on youtube, all over google and anywhere I can think of, the next closest solution I found was vshare: http://vshare.in/ which I almost bought, but after reading through some of the forums I didn't see anyone running this from their home. All seem to have bought some sort of hosting. All I'm wanting to do is run a media server, preferably on windows that has a nice web interface for users to log into then is able to stream movies of all file types mostly avi and music. Video streaming seems to be the problem. As for now if I could even use Jinzora and instead of streaming through IE, FF, etc. when the play button is pressed it opens the movie in the user's default video player I would settle for that. Features: Web Interface Video/Audio Streaming File Upload File Download If anyone has a solution they know of that has the above features I would greatly appreciate to hear of it. I've looked also at LinuxMCE, XBMC. XBMC looks nice, but no streaming over the net. LinuxMCE looks great, but I didn't see mention any web video streaming. As far as Jinzora or vShare, I would love to use either of the 2, but I'm not too familiar with SQL or PHP.
  21. If you get this working I'd love to know how with either VNC or RDP or both. I attempted using RDP and it launched the aditio agent and said it was listening on the proper port, but when I tried to connect using localhost:3389 it gave me an error instantly which I forget what it said. I'll try again tomorrow and post if you haven't already gotten this to work. Actually I just tried again and the adito agent launches fine this time I did get that same error as K-radical about the wrong module size. Then when I fire up the rdp client normally and attempt to connect to localhost or localhost:3389 I the error says: The client cannot connect. You are already connected to the console of this computer. A new session cannot be established.
  22. Anyone here using Jinzora? I posted this thread some time ago: http://hak5.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12094&hl= and after checking out Tversity which was nice also Orb was cool, Jinzora seems to be exactly what I need. I've got it all setup following the tut on the wiki, my biggest problem is video streaming. Following the Jinzora forums to get a divx webplayer embedded I was able to do so, but everytime I choose to play a video it gives back a 404 not found error and sometimes not a download-able divx file error. I posted on the Jinzora forums, but no one has replied. On the thread above I see that stingwray is familiar with Jinzora... I'm hoping he can shed some light on this issue. If it helps at all I'm running this one Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Major thanks for any advice info.
  23. I too have ran into the same issue using public networks. Being assigned the usual 192.168.x.x then connecting to VPN at home and assigned by the VPN server 10.10.x.x also out of idea's what to try.

    OpenVPN

@ jmaxxz, I have been searching for a good written tutorial for setting up OpenVPN to use as a tunnel to secure traffic for quite sometime. Hoping hak5 would do a segment on it. My current LAN is all windows based, Vista, XP and 2k3, soon to add some sort of *nix box. Would love to see a good tutorial. From what I hear it's a real pain to setup and configure.
