  1. So putty is excellent for on the go/portable ssh, but is there a VPN alternative? For example let's say I have a windows box ready to accept PPTP connections, instead of having a friend, the client configure a VPN connection via windows built in utility is there a app/portable solution that will connect to a PPTP, L2TP, etc. VPN? I'm not looking for any webservice soltions such as hamachi or nothing like that. Just a simple downloadable executable that will do all the work so all the user needs to really do is enter in the server address and credentials. Thanks in advance.
  2. For Windows Media Center check out: http://www.mymovies.dk/ does a very nice job providing everything you'd need for your video/movie library. Also check out: http://www.amahi.org/ Not sure if you'll be able to add netflix and hulu, but it's worth a look. Whatever you do decide I'd love to know. I'm looking for an all in one solution myself.
  3. @ digip, nice find on that video I just finished watching. This is all far to interesting. I can see so many advantages as well as disadvantages for everyone. @ Infiltrator, this might be the tool: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forums/tool-requests/34754-ddosim-layer-7-ddos-simulator.html Another thing I thought of earlier is this could be an advantage for ISP's as I can see customer's leasing a pool of IP's at least once IPv6 is standard.
  4. Thanks guys for all the info. I would like to find a consumer grade router that supports ipv6 natively and setup a few workstations on a separate network at home to play with it. The webinar I've been watching did mention the link-local address that's equivalent to the APIPA (169.254.x.x) address scheme in XP. I guess the only other thing that is of ? to me is our ISP's providing these cable modems, dsl modems, etc. I wonder if configurations will be such as cable modem --> 24-port switch and that modem capable of providing 24 ipv6 addresses. 1 weird thing I've noticed a few months ago I believe and I did post it here somewhere (can't remember what the topic was called) but when I ping one of my hosts on my lan it always replies back with the ipv6 address.
  5. This is going to be interesting. That's the same understanding I got. I just wonder say most of the consumer grade router's out there now say they all or even some switch to using ipv6 addresses for local lan for the one's that support it, that will then expose those hosts directly to the internet? IPv6 has it's advantages, but I wonder what the disadvantages are.
  6. I'm watching a webinar now on ipv6 so I can learn it. It mentions there isn't really a pre-defined set of ip's for local lan routing. It says that a local address would start with "FEC0" and that will work the same as our 192, 172, 10. lan's. My question is, if this is the case any consumer grade router that supports ipv6 on the lan side, will their still need to be port forwarding to hosts running web servers, ftp, etc? Also I haven't done really any research yet, but what about dyndns, services like that? IPv6 I'm sure will be better with the amount of internet enabled devices, but what about troubleshooting? Setting static addresses? Doesn't seem like it will be to user friendly.
  7. I am in need of a method for this also. I currently have been using Adito as I can upload files remotely via ssl and I like the interface, but sometimes it will just halt. It will just hang and the upload will be as if it were paused. I haven't put wireshark on it yet to see what's going on, but if there is a better way and secure that'd be great. A way with minimal configuration on the client side. My main purpose is so all family and upload all of their family pic's they take on their camera's straight to the server so any family member can access. That's one thing I like about adito is the ability to setup multiple accounts and let family create their own passwords and all they really have to do is navigate to the address hosting adito and log in. I did a little reading on this "Amanda" it sounds interesting and might just work. Thanks, nice find.
  8. My guy actually found I believe a 32-bit HDMI card from newegg.com that should work just fine. I have a 32-bit sata raid card in there now to add sata support. I already have a desktop with hdmi that is the current media server, but I'm wanting to switch to the 2850.
  9. Damn. Thanks guys. @ digip, yes I saw that link, that was about all I could find also. I guess my only option is to use VGA and throw a pci audio card in it seems. Sucks, because that's more work with less quality. I currently am using a HDMI over cat5 extender that works great.
  10. I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 I'm wanting to turn into my media server. The issue I'm running into is I can't seem to find a video card with HDMI out that will work. This server has: 3 PCI-X 64-bit/133Mhz. I have quite a few PowerEdge server's actually and since I decided to make this one the media server I actually just now noticed not one server has any audio outputs at all. If it's possible to find an video card with HDMI out that should take care of the audio as well right? Thanks. PowerEdge 2850: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/2850_specs.pdf
  11. Ok I got a bit of time to mess with this now. I'm going to be using a Dell PowerEdge 1750 for now. On boot it lists and PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller with the option of Ctrl+M to enter configuration. This is running Server 2k8 Enterprise x86. In device manager it lists Dell PERC 4/Di RAID Controller and Microsoft iSCSI Initiator. I'm still at a very "n00b" level with RAID as I've never had any hands on until I got these server's. Is there a utility that I can use in the windows environment to recognize and configure this array or do I need to use the configuration utility on boot? Also if I have to use the config utility upon boot is that going to mess with my current config on the 2 internal scsi disks on this server now?
  12. Yes I can ping the nas box, join VM's to the domain, access shares and all. I'm using the same admin account I've used to join everything else to the domain. Here is a screen shot of the settings page:
  13. I'm trying to get this NAS box connected to the domain, but having a bit of an issue. The info here: http://www.sabioproducts.com/images/sabio/pdfs/cm404_user_guide.pdf Says to enter in AD ID, KDC Address, etc. but on my settings I have options to enter: AD Host.Domain name domain.local AD KDC Address 192.168.1.100 AD ID Administrator AD Password password Above are examples to how I entered in the information. I keep getting an AD ID/password error. On the options when set to join a domain the default option listed for AD ID was "administrator". Am I missing something? Support for Sabio products seems very hard to find other then the website.
  14. Thanks guys for clearing this up for me. I do have 2 DC's setup for redundancy the modules did cover that. Haven't gotten to WINS just yet, but this all makes sense and is understandable now.
  15. Watched a few modules on 2k3 and 2k8 getting the feel for AD. Got a what seems to be a simple, possibly dumb question to you sys admins. If you have a DC setup and join machine to the DC, you shut the domain controller completely down and the newly joined machine is still powered on. Say for example you reboot that machine and the DC is still powered off, how is it possible on reboot I'm still able to login to the domain apparently? Also in a domain environment where the user can log into the domain via a number of workstations and on any machine they will have their personal desktop, file's, etc. is that roaming profiles? I haven't gotten that far yet in the modules and have always just been curious. Sorry if these are dumb questions.
  16. Sweet! Glad you got it up and going. I used it for a bit with AD, but the downside is apparently it doesn't dynamically update the User's or Groups. e.g. whatever user's and groups you have on the DC when implementing adito is what you get to work with in adito. If you create a new user or group, adito may see that user or group after some time, but it won't let you log-in with that user, or make any changes to that group on the adito side. I ended up going with the built in. A little more work managing everything in AD and in Adito, but it works. I'm sure fixing the group and user issue may be simple I actually didn't even research it. If you do and get it working I'd love to know the fix.
  17. This is a summer/fall project of mine this year hopefully. I have had this in mind for sometime. I planned on using HD USB webcams with cat5/6 extender's. (I'm currently using HDMI over cat5/6 extender and it works great). Having all the camera's run to 1 server and using some motion detection software. The reason I choose that route is I don't have to worry about running power to each cam as most of the POE cam's I've seen are a bit pricey. I think it was Shannon who mentioned a nice opensource webcam software called YAW or something like that. (Yet Another WebCam). It looked nice, but sometime ago I had posted about this same topic and had gotten a link to an even better opensource webcam software that I can't find or remember for nothing. I have a bit of a setup in mind, that I believe is going to work great. The only thing is night vision, I doubt USB webcams support night vision. I have that linksys cam as mentioned by Infiltrator, but the video quality isn't the greatest. I like the fact that it supports dyndns and has a few nice feature's, but as far as quality I wasn't too impressed. What I'd like to do is I have a webcam I took out of a HP tablet laptop 1.3MP that I'd love to use, because it's so portable. However I haven't been able to find any info on what wire's to splice into a usb cable.
  18. Thanks, LOL. I actually like the hot summer, but I've never been so sad to see the winter time end :(
  19. Thanks. Nice to meet you to bud.

  20. Thanks dude. Nice find. I think I will throw this in a VM and play with it as it looks like it might be of some use. I didn't even think to try FreeNAS to see if it see's the drive's. I might try that as well. @ Infiltrator, I'm not sure what model the RAID Controller is, I didn't pop the chassis off to look yet, but during boot it does list IBM ServRaid 7 BIOS I think is what it said... shoulda posted while I was booting it. I just happen to boot tonight to try to finish setting up phproxy as the temp is currently 58 degrees with a low of 40 for the night :)
  21. Not a problem buddy. I'm all about helping out. I'll be waiting for your site.
  22. Would be nice to see some statistics. e.g. someone mentioned possible $500 a month. Just how many clicks or how much traffic would that require? I'm assuming using adsense there is a way to monitor the hits? @ Infiltrator, Count me in to help advertise. Depending on what you decide to do I will introduce your site to the general public if your interested. You've helped me out quite a bit on some of my past posts. Thanks.
  23. ? is can those provide sufficient cooling in 80-90 degree temps. I will probably do this anyway just because I like the way they look and for the extra cooling.
  24. Today it was about 81-84 degrees and in the garage the server's were running at well over 50 degrees according to SpeedFan. I shut everything down, but where I live the summer is hott hott typically 90 degrees plus consistently throughout the summer. I'm not sure what the actual temp was inside the garage. Do you guys think somthing like this would be sufficient? http://www.rackfans.com/index.php maybe a couple 2U's or fill the majority of the back of the rack with 1 or 2U's? I wanted to do something like this anyway with blue led fans.
  25. I will check the next time I boot. I had to shut everything down today it was too hot in the garage :(
